I am re-posting this from the US Syncro website. It is a very good tyre comment from Dan Flemming.
I wrote a couple of tire reviews for Derek Drew's Consumer Search web site last year. The good news is that every tire manufacturer is capable of making a pretty good tire.
I have been thrashing various vehicles in Baja for 15 years, using a variety of tires, from Cooper, Firestone, Bridgestone, Michelin, and BFG. We always carry air pumps, plug kits, patch kits, and even 2 spares at times.
When your Syncro is headed for rough dirt roads and rocks, thorns, and other threats, a tire with a reinforced sidewall is best. Baja tire failures often result in complete destruction of the sidewall, which can ruin your wheel as well.
As Syncro owners, you are encouraged to read the tire reviews at Consumer Search
Most appropriate is the SUV tire review at:
http://www.consumer search.com/ www/automotive/ suv-tires/ index.html
Bottom line is that there are only two contenders in AT Tires with reinforced sidewalls (I'm not talking about load range, I'm talking about designed-in puncture resistance and the ability to run under-inflated to soften washboard or increase traction). Puncture resistance may not seem too important to some of you, but a sidewall puncture requires a new tire, as they cannot be repaired legally or safely. BTW, sticks are the biggest threat. You may think it is fun to run over them, but
one will be pointed just the right direction to rip the side out of your tire, so don't do it.
The BFG AT KO and the new Goodyear Wrangler with Silent Armor (Kevlar) are the two contenders at the time I wrote the review for Derek.
In Baja and Score Racing, you see pretty much only the BFG. The Wrangler is new, and does not have much of a reputation yet.
When you call around for the BFG AT KO, you will find that prices vary widely. However Sears has the best price, and for example sells the 215/75/15 size that many of us prefer for $89, and with road hazard, mounting, taxes, etc. a set of 4 comes to $485 in California.
I know this because I recently bought 4, and following our annual LA Bay trip, Mark Baker bought 4, as one of the Daton Timberlines that he had blew up with a total sidewall failure, after only a few miles.
For some reason Sears seems to be able to sell this tire for 20-30% less than other vendors.
New BFG AT KOs are quieter than expected for an open tread AT, however unevenly worn ones get pretty noisy. Don't judge the KO by riding in someone else's van or truck with worn tires, try new ones. Note that these tires suck in mud, but sand and dirt and rocks are okay.
There are lots of choices out there --- but I like the BFG purchased through Sears because of the low price and the many outlets that can honor your road hazard warranty, etc.
