Tyres

I am re-posting this from the US Syncro website.  It is a very good tyre comment from Dan Flemming.

I wrote a couple of tire reviews for Derek Drew's Consumer Search web site last year. The good news is that every tire manufacturer is capable of making a pretty good tire.

I have been thrashing various vehicles in Baja for 15 years, using a variety of tires, from Cooper, Firestone, Bridgestone, Michelin, and BFG. We always carry air pumps, plug kits, patch kits, and even 2 spares at times.

When your Syncro is headed for rough dirt roads and rocks, thorns, and other threats, a tire with a reinforced sidewall is best. Baja tire failures often result in complete destruction of the sidewall, which can ruin your wheel as well.

As Syncro owners, you are encouraged to read the tire reviews at Consumer Search

Most appropriate is the SUV tire review at:

http://www.consumer search.com/ www/automotive/ suv-tires/ index.html

Bottom line is that there are only two contenders in AT Tires with reinforced sidewalls (I'm not talking about load range, I'm talking about designed-in puncture resistance and the ability to run under-inflated to soften washboard or increase traction). Puncture resistance may not seem too important to some of you, but a sidewall puncture requires a new tire, as they cannot be repaired legally or safely. BTW, sticks are the biggest threat. You may think it is fun to run over them, but
one will be pointed just the right direction to rip the side out of your tire, so don't do it.

The BFG AT KO and the new Goodyear Wrangler with Silent Armor (Kevlar) are the two contenders at the time I wrote the review for Derek.

In Baja and Score Racing, you see pretty much only the BFG. The Wrangler is new, and does not have much of a reputation yet.

When you call around for the BFG AT KO, you will find that prices vary widely. However Sears has the best price, and for example sells the 215/75/15 size that many of us prefer for $89, and with road hazard, mounting, taxes, etc. a set of 4 comes to $485 in California.

I know this because I recently bought 4, and following our annual LA Bay trip, Mark Baker bought 4, as one of the Daton Timberlines that he had blew up with a total sidewall failure, after only a few miles.

For some reason Sears seems to be able to sell this tire for 20-30% less than other vendors.

New BFG AT KOs are quieter than expected for an open tread AT, however unevenly worn ones get pretty noisy. Don't judge the KO by riding in someone else's van or truck with worn tires, try new ones. Note that these tires suck in mud, but sand and dirt and rocks are okay.

There are lots of choices out there --- but I like the BFG purchased through Sears because of the low price and the many outlets that can honor your road hazard warranty, etc.

Hi all. In my ongoing search for the appropriate tyre I'm wondering if anybody has run
Coopers AT/R 205/70R15. On paper these seem like a good option and a reasonable
alternative to the BFG A/Ts. Slightly cheaper, slightly less aggressive, reenforced and most
importantly available.

Cheers Murray
Murray,

I am running the 15" BFG and find them very good.  The BFG has something that very few other tyres have.  They have a bead protector.  The tyre is moulded to have solid rubber over the top of the rim bead and the effect is to dramatically reduce rim pinch, where the tyre hits something very solid and compresses the wall of the tyre so far that it can actually be chopped by the rim bead.

All other things being equal, I will go for the tyre that affords this degree of side wall protection.

Hi Les, Indeed. There are also none in the country until at least May I'm told - well 3 actually. Mind you I've waited this long. Still, if anybody's tried the Coopers I'd be keen to hear.

Gday Murray,

I know you're after a 7o series tyre so you can stow the spare ok
underneath. In which case, regardless of stock availability, you seem to
be locked out of your preferred tyre anyway, the BFG A/T. They don't
list a 205/70R15 AT/R. Do you agree with that finding Murray?

So the Cooper A/T may be the one for you. It only loses around 15mm
clearance height anyway compared to a BFG 215/75R15 A/T that's mostly
used on the syncro. Mind you, if you intend doing more sand driving as I
suspect, particularly when you'll need to deflate the tyres below 20psi,
every bit of extra height clearance will be appreciated!

Cheers. Ken

RE: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Re: Tyres

Hey Ken,

Yep, you are right, the BFG A/Ts only come in 215/75R 15. Which, is obviously OK and they are no doubt very good off roaders for a syncro. The copers are exactly the same dimensions as the goodyears road tyres that currently don the beast 205/70R 15, so they should fit in the spare holder and (although I'm sure they'll sit a little higher), I would have thought, been closer to what VW designed the thing to take in terms of gearing and the like?? But, as you say ground clearance is the big issue and 15mm can make all the difference in the right situation. I'd still be keen to hear from anyone whose running the coopers - they have a 90,000 guarantee and are reenforced - although this is not the same as the reenforcement on the BFGs which I suspect would still be tougher.

Cheers Murray

Gday Murray,

Take the time to read the fineprint of the guarantee conditions. Bit of
an education. I read one recently, bit like a battery, a pro-rata thingy
but what you had to do on a regular basis including certified
inspections to remain eligible was pretty mindblowing. I wouldn't hold
too much store in the guarantee if I was you.

Cheers.

mmm, yes it might mean rotating pretty regularly amongst other things. Don't worry, the only guarantee I really want is that they do the job I ask of them well and for a reasonable amount of kilometers.

Dear Murray,
One of my son's is running 15" Coopers on a current Toyota Hilux (He's a forestry officer in Tasmania) about half his running is on gravel and he is impressed with the durability of them compared to his previous Goodrich. Hasn't had punctures/trouble with either and reckons handling about the same.
I'm running 205R16C" Hankook Dynamic RF04 block pattern 8ply on my syncro (rotating 6) which have done 50,000 K between them and are about 60% worn. They ride fairly hard however but were relatively attractive on price without being in the el cheapo category.  Had no trouble when letting them down for sand although didn't drop them below 20lbs. May be worth a look if only on the Hankook internet site. <www.hankooktyre.com.au>

Get the name you always wanted with the new y7mail email address.

B F Goodrich stopped making the 27 X 8.5 X 14 All Terrain some years ago but have re-started production.

A new member, Mark Yourn, has asked me about tyres suitable for mainly
highway use with minimal off-road use. I know that there were a lot of
posts on this subject recently. Was any consensus evident?

Les
Not all tyres are available in all sizes.

What size is Mark after?

Francesca, Gary,

Time to get some tyres for our new rims.I had a look at the MAXXIS
MA-751 BRAVO 225/75R15 quoted price $187 fitted.
Any Syncronauts has experience with this tyre?

Cheers

Theo

Thanks Theo. My rims are being picked up today to be sent to Port Macquarie. Should be here early next week.

I am going to look at Geolanders, BFGs and will now check out the ones you have mentioned. My bus has about 20mm of extra height so I might go for 215x65x15.

Will be interested to see what our fellow owners have to say about the maxxis. There are also a lot of posts in the archive section with varied views on tyres.

Cheers, Peter from Port M

I was chatting to Graeme at Batemans Bay who has very happily been running Kumho tyres on his 15-inch rims for years. Haven't heard of Maxxis. I'm interested in anything serviceable with the least road noise possible.
