Vanagon Syndrome: cured.

Hi Hartmut and all,

Well, we packed ourselves into the Syncro today and headed out of town towards Bendigo (nice sunny day here, for a change). About 1 hour down the road, she started the familiar bucking, so we pulled over in Woodend and Tony fitted your AFM harness (while we partook of the legendary Woodend vanilla slices - don't miss 'em if you're passing through). Proceeded on up the freeway to Bendigo, and she purred along without a hitch. After lunch and an underground mine tour, we drove all the way back (approx. 2 hours) with not one hiccup. Verdict: very pleased, and can only conclude that we were afflicted with Vanagon Syndrome, now cured with the addition of the harness. Even better, now that we have removed the proverbial potato up the pipe, she really is flying along. I think the choking issue was unconnected with the VS - probably the product of a blocked Catholic converter (never known to enhance performance, or promote religious faith).

So, thanks a lot. All that remains is to source an AFM harness for less than a ridiculous $350. Gosh I'm pleased to be able to post a good news story for a change! Happy motoring to you all.

Francesca.

PS Hartmut, should we send it back to you post haste?

Francesca,

I am relieved to hear of this outcome – the vanilla slices must have made it doubly gratifying!

Les

Hi Francesca,

So glad the old box has VS !! and no do not send it back, when BenT offered one for sale the other day, I grabbed it, payed for it , I think it was US$  80.00 , because I thought that you maybe would need one. So when it arrives I will install that one and you can keep mine. Same damage of course. Or if you prefer to use the one from BenT send mine back once the other one has arrived from the States.

All too easy !

About Vanagon Syndrome  :  In my references which came with my Trakka Deluxe recently, I found notes  written by the first owner. He said that he  experienced , what today is known VS , so he ‘fixed’ the problem by cooling the ECU with some ducting and a computer fan !! That fixed the problem believe it or not. He further states that VW much later installed a modified cable in front of the AFM. He then disconnected the cooling fan but he says, if problems arise down the track, switch on the fan !!

There you go......... Hartmut

It should be there shortly if it hasn't already arrived. The US Postal Service is good at handing it over to the Aussie Post. Most delays happen within OZ typically customs.

Gee thanks, Hartmut. We are most grateful. (And there I was privately kicking myself that I missed out on that one the other day.) I'll forward you the equivalent of US$80. Did you pay for postage, by the way?

Francesca.

PS What's the best method of payment? We don't have a cheque book, but an electronic funds transfer of PayPal is probably the way to go.

Francesca,
Postage was included in that price. I asked my vendor to find me another one. I will offer it to the group first once I get another. If someone can't wait, there's a fellow selling a used one on eBay now for US$199 plus shipping. There's another vendor on the Samba asking about US$230. You won;t have to pay that if I can help it.

Com’on Pedro, stick to your guitar, leave the violin to  Isaac Stern.....  I’m proud of you , trading the lovely new Subi for a very 2nd hand T2 (was my fault) and now proud owner of that lovely Deluxe Syn.

And remember, Peter, driving a Syncro is like flying your  very own aeroplane .  One hour flying equals  4 hrs maintenance. This is real fun !!!

Hartmut,

Thanks a lot! I think you've just uncovered another syncro project for me!

Bugger the crass PC fan.

Thinking I'll go for a complete package 12vdc high tech ECU cooler system replete with recirculating fluorescent glow in the dark coolant through clear tubing and backlit multi colour 8 alternate mode flashing illumination for effect.

You'll see me arrive ok at night.

I'll show and tell it at Valla no worries ok. HA!

Cheers.

Hartmut

Hartmut, I'll wait to hear from you once the harness has arrived from the US. It's very handy having Ben T in the US letting us know about spare parts - much obliged, Sir.

Just wanted to mention that I saw one of these for sale on TheSamba.com a day or so ago. Seller is asking US$95 including shipping to a US address. He/She might take less and post directly to OZ. The harness I sent to Hartmut cost me as much to ship to OZ as a US address.

Sorry, I do not have the link handy at the moment.

Thanks for letting me know, Hartis. That took uncomfortably longer than when I sent a RHD PS rack to Andy in Ceduna. Perhaps the postman/woman likes be rid the larger items.;-)

Cheers,

BenT
