Hi Folks,

Just wondering who would be interested in a group buy of a stainless
steel fuel tank or water tank from South Africa?

They are made to fit perfectly in the vacant underfloor area of your
syncro and come in two sizes - the flat bottom version is 48L and the
tapered bottom version is a whopping 58L.

Prices for tanks only in Australian dollars are:

48L tank - $435.00
58L tank - $500.00
Apparently all GST included.

Fitting kits are also available and there are two options here too -
Fuel version and water version

Prices for fitting kits in Australian dollars are:

Fuel fitting kit - $190.00
Water fitting kit - $170.00

Prices for freight aren't too bad to the east coast of Australia are
$200 per tank & fitting kit, however, if we manage to get an order of 10
together they come down to $60.00.

We would need the tanks and kits to be sent to one address though and
then there would either be pick ups from there or courier costs from there?

Ian is also doing rear ladder kits for mounting all sorts of items - yet
they are not quite in production yet (very close though) - great for
carrying that extra kit on a long trip.

See attached photos.

Who's interested?

Let me know.

Thanks,

Skot
I'm in for 2 tanks. 1 fuel and 1 water kit.

Hi Scott,
I'm interested in having a long range fuel tank but cannot figure out where this large void is where it can be fitted.
Do these SA tanks hang below the skid rails ?

I'm actually returning to the idea someone proposed of a tank on the bash plate where the spare wheel is fitted.
I travel with my spares inside where they are accessible, with only a get us home in 2WD spare up front.

To change tack:
I'd previously talked myself out of a tank up front because of the fire hazard,
but I then rationalized the idea so that :
1. I would only fill it when it was necessary on a long trip with say 7 or 8 hundred Ks between petrol sources.
Otherwise, I'd leave it empty.

2. On such a trip, I would progressively empty it into the mail tank.

I've started talking to the sheet metal man who made the belly tanks for the Bergmeister.
It could be plumbed to fill from the top. from where the 2WDs are filled, and because it slopes, emptied from the bottom by an electric pump.
It would need a lockable switch to prevent accidental emptying while the main tank was full.

Having said this, I'm still interested in the SA idea.

Peter,

Have a look at the cross section (attached) of the underside of the syncro with the tanks installed . The standard tanks sit just below the main chassis rails but not the central drive-shaft rails. The larger tapered bottom tank grades down to just above that skid rail level to keep it safe.

Ian has tested them on loads of terrain.

I have a water tank in mine in the passenger side spot which hangs about the same as these and there was no damage done during our Rover trail adventure.

Its amazing how much clearance these vehicles have.

Ian said he is working on some rock sliders as well - be good to see them as the last manufacturer of these in the UK seems to have gone out of business.

With the strength of these tanks I would say they will dent and not rupture if struck by a rock especially as the sills of the syncro would hit as well.

Let me know if you want one.

If we get at least 10 tanks we get much cheaper freight and maybe a group discount?

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Skot,
Thank for taking on this project.
I note that on the page with the 3 pictures the small tank is listed as 46.5litre and the second is 48 litre.
I would like 2 of the smaller ones. Are they a problem with the vin number?
I'll buy the following.
2 x 46.5 tank - $435.00
Fuel fitting kit - $190.00
Water fitting kit - $170.00
plus freight
Cheers
Peter
Skot, do all of the tanks involve drilling through the crossmember to the wheel well for the filler and vent? I like his tanks but firstly I don't want to drill my crossmember, secondly I don't want a filler pipe in the road of the tyre. Greg

Peter,

The 48 L tank is only tapered on one front edge. The 46.5 is tapered on both edges and is a good one if you run A/C as it allows the A/C pipes to run past it without issue.

The 48L tank is side specific (i.e. it is tapered to fit around the sliding door aperture) and is made so that the VIN Chassis number is visible due to the inlet being moved more towards the centre of the van.

The 46.5L double tapered nose tanks cause issues with the VIN (Cant see it as the inlet cores through it on the drivers side just behind the wheel arch).

Hence, for the drivers side go with the 48L tank - its slightly bigger in capacity and doesn't interfere with the chassis number. The passenger side I would do the same thing if you don't have A/C as you get a bigger capacity tank for the same $$$.

The 46 and the 48L tanks cost the same $$.

In South Africa they don't have this issue as the VIN is in a different location.

Let me know if you want to change.

Cheers,

Skot

Greg,

The drivers side tanks will all drill through the chassis cross rail just behind the front wheel arch to allow access to the filler location in the original 2wd filler spot. The passenger side already has a cut out which I utilise in my syncro for the passenger side.

My dad had just the fuel tank in a similar design fitted to the passenger side with the filler piped over to the drivers side 2wd filler point (no hole cutting as the breather fits through there too on the passenger side).

I will be breaking out the hole saw for mine. If you were worried about strength - weld a plate around the hole. i.e. a square plate with a round hole cut in it the same size will be plenty. I have done this for steel beams in a multi-storey building with fire services pipes running through them to keep head clearance sufficient. The building is in Pitt St Sydney and it is still standing with no issues.

The filler doesn't get in the road as it easily clears the tyre when angled correctly. Be a good idea to protect it with some spare thick rubber to prevent stones damaging it.

I have this same set up on my passenger side running 235 x 75 x 15 BFG's and they have never hit it once.

See photo.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks Scott,
Is it possible to download all of these pages, as for example a pdf ?
These guys give a lot of information, but the web site keeps flicking to the next photo.
I'd like to climb underneath with drawings, etc., in hand and work it out in my own mind.

If we get at least 10 tanks we get much cheaper freight and maybe a group discount?

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Skot,
When writing to your Safrican could you ask if the tank contains any baffles  ? Had an early Caddy ,
That had none and the noise from moving fuel was extensive, so much so that we sold the thing....
Also , could you ask if we could order a heat exchanger included as I fancy a hot shower after a long drive.. Inlet from the back and outlet to front like the Trakka ones.

Just came home from our dentist visit at Byron Bay. Used the Polo Tdi , used 4.81 ltr per
100 kms ! Used 38ltr for the 800 km trip.

I will see if I can get a cut away photo of them.

Hurt,

Here is a photo of the baffles laid in a very partially completed tank plus a few photos of a few tanks completed pre polishing and post polishing. A very nice finish on the completed product!

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Skot, I already have water tanks for the rhs and up front. So I just need a lhs fuel tank. I can see by the photos that they are really well made tanks I just don't want to go the fuel transfer route. I will fit another high pressure pump and a shuttle valve to give me a double redundancy on fuel supply. So if I am in it is only for a lhs fuel tank. I have no preference as far as size and shape go, I just have a thing about drilling holes in body work. So if one of his tanks can be fitted to the lhs without drilling big holes I'm in. Thanks for your efforts thus far and sorry for being a bit OCD. Greg

Hi Skot,

I was looking at replacing my Trakka tanks a few months back. Got some quotes locally (Bowral, NSW) to rebuild like for like in 316 stainless and they came out very close to these SA tanks (basically $1k for both). Like Hart, I would like the heat exchanger built into one tank to maintain hot and cold water services. Also not keen to cut holes in the van so would require tanks that do not require this. The Trakka tanks are able to be fitted without this modification as far as I am aware (pics attached).

I also have at least 3 other people with Trakka's who are keen to replace tanks. Was going to suggest a group buy from the local manufacturer but you have beat me to it.

Cheers,

Jon.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Scott,
I'm interested in having a long range fuel tank but cannot figure out where this large void is where it can be fitted.

Peter
