vw-bulli.de - Official Site + Book

Guys,

I have discovered the factory has put together a wonderful website
celebrating the 60 years.

Furthermore, it contains MANY T3 Syncro photos, some (many) I have
never seen before. These include the last ever European built Syncro
now sitting in Steyr Puch museum, test drive photos

It also includes:

T3 Brochures (Prospekte)
T3 Proving Runs (Erprobung)
T3 Conversion (Umbau)
- this is interesting - TV Show has taken an Army Syncro and
re-built for a complete Expedition Adventure car.

http://www.vw-bulli.de/de/modelle/t3-bis-1990.html (for German readers
amongst us)

BOOK
----

330 pages / 440 studio shots from 60th Anniversary in Hannover. Put
out by the factory. 14,90 EUR

There is no shipping schedule to Australia.

I have enquired as to the costs for 1 to Australia and multiples to
Australia, and requested Sea Freight as well as Air Freight.

Is anyone else interested in purchasing this book with me? We can then
redistribute locally from a bulk purchase.

Mark,

Great websites, thanks.

Please put me down for a book.

Hi Les,

Well that's 2 at least!

Correction on the website - it is not actually a VW site, however, it
is supported by VW Commercial Vehicles (As it would have to be to get
this much detail) - It is put together by experienced journalists.

Under Multimedia is some history, including T3, as well as the T3
Tuning video of the Army vehicles.

Sorry Mark,
If I buy any more VW books will be in strife. However ..........
1. Is it known when the last European T3/25 Syncro was built?
2. When the last European RHD T3 Syncro was built?
3.When the last European RHD T3 Syncro that was sold new in Australia was built?
4. Did the Syncro production outlast the 2WD T3 production?
5. Was South African T3 production the last in the world and when did that finish?

I'm waiting to see you, Phil or Les on Mastermind -I think I can guess your special category.
Cheers

Roger,

Just caught up with your message.  There are several sites carrying history.  As is usual with the Internet, it's a bit hard to determine how accurate they are.  Due to switching between computers lately, I haven't brought forward my OE favourites list, in which there are some bookmarks, but if you Google this:

THE VW SYNCRO STORY – Simon Holloway

you will find a lot of interesting stuff.  And there is a lot more, of course.

In respect of authoritative information in Australia, I defer to Phill.

I can add a bit about the SA production - they went on with the T3 for some years with a 2.3 litre engine but finally succumbed to the inferior T4/5 series.  (Sorry Brian!)

.

But no Syncro’s, even in South Africa , since the early 90’s I believe.  The 2.3 was the inline 5 cylinder petrol. Now if some-one had kept the Syncro going, but with an updated engine (eg 5 cyl turbo diesel) and stronger transmission, that’s what I would have bought.

Hi Les,

Do you know of any australian army cobra’s still in existence ? I read the article from Simon (who organises vanfest). He writes that the Australian army had some Syncro based buggies… Interested to know more about them. They aer told to be build in 1993. Has anyone got more info on them ?

If it helps, i could collect orders in Germany and send big package to

sense only for 10+ copies or so.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the offer - that would perhaps help, particularly given
the extraordinary costs quoted by Volkswagen:

Folgende Versandkosten durch UPS entstehen dabei für Sie:

1 Buch 144,15 €
5 Bücher 294,20 €

As I will be in Hannover early March, I have politely declinded Herr
Zimmer's offer to post the book and will collect 2 books from the
Customer Centre at the factory.

Mach's gut,

Mark.

Hi Mark,

maybe you'll bring more than 2 for the Australian community? For the
US we're currently preparing the first shipping where the prices per
book is currently somewhere around US$30 shipped to your house in the
US. Larry Chase is collecting orders for the US. Shipping to Australia
is a little bit higher. Maybe you'll just pick up 10 or so? :)

Hi Martin

Thanks for your email - I asked les for your email address however you have beaten him to it!

10 books will be around 15kg which is quite heavy for cabin luggage or checked luggage of limit 20kg! Only leaves 5kg fuer die Unterwaesche!

Martin, can you work out an equivalent for shipping to Australia and I'm sure we'll have no trouble selling them. We'll need to post them on but that is fine.

Where abouts in Germany are you?

Regards
Mark.

Hi Mark,

maybe you'll bring more than 2 for the Australian community? For the
US we're currently preparing the first shipping where the prices per
book is currently somewhere around US$30 shipped to your house in the
US. Larry Chase is collecting orders for the US. Shipping to Australia
is a little bit higher. Maybe you'll just pick up 10 or so? :)

Hi,

Les is sleeping right now :P I'm in Berlin. With the US we'll probably
transfer money via Papal, i order books and thn reship to the US via
DHL, which costs around half of UPS. I can tell you prices:

Shipping of 12 books at a time (20kg + packaging...)

DHL Standard: 12 books à 14.95 + 6 EUR shipping (DE) + 82 EUR shipping
(DE-OZ) = 22.29/book
DHL Premium: -"- + 6 EUR shipping (DE) +166 EUR shiping
(DE-OZ) = 29.29 EUR/book

it's not cheap, but the cheapest i can imagine :/ sorry... may an
option for all you in OZ anyway?

let's see how it works with the US, first test will start anytime
soon :)

Hallo Mark and Martin

we have not been on line for quite some time, but are always reading the postings!!!! I would so dearly love to get a book for Hartmut but seeing the costs they have quoted for sending one to Australia - I think I will pursue another avenue. What a pity that you can only take 20kg Mark otherwise you could bring back many more!

Can anyone tell me how they justify the cost of 144....Euro PER BOOK????????????????

Although we are german and we love the mother country - these sort of "deals" PLUS a visist to the German Consulate in Sydney this week with all the associated typically german "rules and regulations" - which at times seem to date back to the olden age - makes one appreciative of the wonderful and open country we live in!

So we are more than ever determined to obtain dual citizenship - which the germans make so hard to obtain for their own people!!!!!!

Take care and love to Deb and little Max. By the way we have a little Sam since the 12.1. - just as cute and happy as yours

Cheers
Elke & Hartmut

Mach's gut,

Mark.

Congratulations Elke on arrival of little Sam! Any photos you can send?

Can't imagine how they justify that cost of 144 EUR. It was 290 EUR for 5 books!

2008/1/25 Elke Kiehn <kiehns@ozemail.com.au>:

Mach's gut,

Mark.

Hi Mark

just an idea - depending how desperate people are for this book - we could may be get an order together and send it out with our next paint order from Germany - they do come by ship and we need to place an order soon anyway. So that would make the freight NIL. Maybe we should get an idea how many for Australia??? They could then be sent straight to our Head Office near Hannover and they pack. They do things like this for us whenever we need them to do something "special". They are great like that.
