water cooled vw vanagon temp sender unit - flashing light

Hi there i was up the beach the other month with my temp going completly off the dial (ie the hot side). and the red light bellow it was flashing.

Any way i know it was BS so i checked the water level and it was low but no lower than its ever been before in 10 yrs so i kept driving without a problem (ie 40km in the sand on Bribie island) ANYONE GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS why id get a BS alarm.

Id appreicate replies from those who have experrienced the same only lets keep to the subject OK

KIS

OK, Hamish, you have made your point.  If you feel that respondents on our website err on the side of too much information, it is better than no response at all.

There are two temp sensors in the system and it might be relevant to which one triggers the flashing light.  I have not experienced this myself but recall from other Syncro websites that it is possible to get low coolant level in the radiator itself while the catch bottle is still full.  This usually calls for bleeding the radiator through the plug on the top of the radiator itself, but let's see if someone can come up with a more direct answer.

We have to exercise some patience and forbearance with each other on this website, including to those who set specifications and limits on the help that they seek.  It is a mutual assistance group and an over-eagerness to help is a lot better than the alternative.

If you definately know that it is BS, then bleeding will not fix it.

It sounds like the water level sensor is defective or needs cleaning.

Hi Hamish,

I had an instance once involving the flashing light whilst decending a mountain range.
I was puzzled at the time since the engine was not under any real load.
After close inspection, with engine running, I found a pin hole in one of the water hoses that had been caused by one of the belts rubbing through.
At the time it was impossible to locate with engine off since the fine mist from the hole would instantly evaporate on the hot engine.
While engine was running a very fine mist could be felt in the engine bay and took a little while to track it down.
I replaced the hose and tied up out of the way to prevent interference with belts.

Regards
Terry
