Water tank

G'day all,

My name is Theo Weiss. I own an ex'90 Teltra Syncro, which I am still
converting into a camper. I am doing version 3 now. Anyway, I like to
install 2 stainless steel water tanks under the chassis. Is there
anyone out there with experience with this kind of work?
Also, the Idle Stabiliser Regulator, according to the mechanic is not
working and there is no spare in the country. Is there any suggestion?
Oh, by the way, I just had my syncro converted to LPG. I guess only
time will tell if I have done the right thing.

Cheers and looking forward to your ideas.

Thanks,
Theo
Oops, I forgot to mention that I live in Melbourne.

Theo,

They make such stainless steel tanks in South Africa to the specifications you mentioned. The tanks are actually identical which allows them to be mounted in either side. I will try to attach pics for your review.

As of the idle stabiliser, let me know if you are unable to get one in OZ as I can get these readily new or used here in the US. All these recent inquiries for parts make me feel lucky to live where I do. Most common Vanagon (T3) Syncro parts can be ordered here and be available wihin 24 hours with few exceptions.

Sorry I forgot the pics. Here they are. They are designed to be filled the same way the 2wd vans fill. Most reuse the fuel fill pipes but for use with water you should have little trouble making a custom fill pipe.

There is a German made copy of this tank made in aluminum. This particular one is available in fuel grade as well as food grade stainless steel.  It's such a simple design than I don't see why you could not have one made locally by a competent sheetmetal workshop.

Ben,

Onya mate!  (That's a purely Australian expression!)  It is probable that the Trakka tank could be duplicated in Australia by any competent aluminium fabricator.

Theo,

I am the owner of the Syncro_T3_Australia website (in Melbourne) and this brings home to me that the original purpose of this Yahoo group was to muster mutual support for all Syncro owners in Australia.  We are few in number, spares are becoming progressively harder to source, and we are going to have to rely on each other more and more in the future.

LPG conversions are not all that common for any T3, let alone the Syncro.  Does anyone have any experience to relate in this regard?  Do you have a conversion?  Did you have problems with it?  How did you resolve the problems?

In respect of water tanks, Trakka did this decades ago (in aluminium) and you would not be far off the mark if you just copied the Trakka installation.  I doubt that this would upset Trakka in any way because they have retained zero records of their commendable T3 camper conversion.

Hi Les,

I actually took dimensions off this tank for the purpose of having them reproduced. I sent the measurements to a friend of mine who was supposed to get some CAD drawings. I'm afraid he will need a bit of a shove to get going on the drawings.

Hi Les and all,

I had an LPG conversion on my recently sold syncro for 10 years. It ran really well, and saved me a fortune in that time. The only downside was a tendency to backfire if not tuned right (usually if it was too lean).

This would usually just blow off one of the intake pipes, but on a couple of occasions damaged expensive components like the air filter housing and the airflow meter. Since then I always left the hose clamps on the intake pipes a little loose. The better, newer conversions, I believe, use a system more like fuel injection for the gas, and should eliminate this problem.

On water tanks, I originally had a galvanized tank made up by a local tank maker to suit the available space. It was quite inexpensive compared to aluminium or stainless, and served me well for 20 years (in 2 different vans). I had expected some fatigue cracks eventually, but none occurred.

As a PS, Steve, who purchased my van, recently emailed me that he had it checked over by his local mechanic, and it passed with flying colours (only 1 split boot), in marked contrast to most the mechanic sees. It feels good to have my understanding of it’s good condition confirmed, and congratulations to my mechanic, Lloyd at Volkwerke.

Hi Theo,

I have a Trakka fitted with two stainless tanks – hot and cold water tanks.  I understand the original owner of the van had the alloy tanks removed and replaced with the stainless ones because he felt that the water tasted better??

Anyway, I am in Melbourne and if it any use to you, you can come over and see how it was done.  My van is in my factory in Rowville (near Scoresby).

Cheers

Theo,

The only ones made in Australia, as far as I know, were the Trakka tanks, therefore long out of production.  Several people make them in South Africa but I doubt that they would be a proposition to import.  The SA tanks are for both fuel and water.  Some SA people use them as long range fuel tanks.

Thanks, Yurick. The main difference between this and the SA tanks is the SA tank is notched on both sides so that it may be fitted left or right w/o altering the fill pipe.
