Can any body with vw engine building experience tell me if when pulling the heads from a wbxer , do the barrels stick to the heads and hence require pulling out , or can they be separated from the heads and be left in place along with the pistons.I'm pretty sure I've got a leaky head gasket (compression, not water) so only need to replace the top gaskets & o rings. Thanks in advance for any info, Eddie Bergodaz.
Mate - i just stripped my motor the other day - in doing so the barrels stayed in the block.
However im sure a few times on other occasions ive seen the barrels stick a little and hence come away so to speak with a head.
Id reccomend being prepaired for the worst = removing barrels and therefore pistons(in order to reassemble them again) and if you go here you may as well drop the engine out .

My friend has changed out a single head when still in the car - so i guess what you are trying to do is do-able..
My only tip is "removing the circlips" on the pistions will not make u smile and hence the recomendation in that instance to remove engine.

When you undo the head and remove it the barrels can either stick to the head or stick to the block.
You must leave the barrels in place (with the pistons). If you pull the barrels off the pistons you are faced with a very difficult task to slide them back onto the pistons (the rings have to be compressed).
If you need advice on how to put the barrels back onto the pistons let me know.
Always use a new gasket kit and the correct sealents (another story).
