Welding seat belt mounts

Well I hopefully have a rear passenger seat belt and z-bar on it's way
down from Cairns. No one in NSW that I could track down seemed to
have one.

Question for you guys. I'm a bit concerned about welding the plate
where the seat belt buckles will mount as this appears a tad close to
the fuel tank. Having already drilled some holes there appears to be
some insulation behind the metal, this could be a good or bad thing.
Can anyone tell me if I have something to worry about here, or no
worries she'll be right mate??

Finally if anyone is willing to take some photos of exactly where
their seat belt and z-bar mounts would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, how much and where do you cut the metal from the front
wheel well so the bigger wheels on the front don't scrap when turning
and going over a bump? Again a photo on this one would be
appreciated. Phill - do you still have the piece of metal you cut as
an example??

Yes, come over and have a look. I copied it from a 16" syncro.

Hi Sam

My syncro has rear belts fitted and the plate that the seat belt buckles are mounted to isn’t welded to the body. It is a piece of flat steel plate with fittings for the seat belt bolts welded in. The plate is bolted through the body to a couple of mounting points which I believe are present on all syncros. Mine came from the UK though so it may be different.

Mine does have the foam behind the body and above the tank too so you’d have to remove the tank to do any welding.

I can take some pics if it would help.

Thanks to everyone who has replied and to big thanks to Roger for the photo that
is attached. Of interest there appears to be a few types of z-bars. Anyway, the
photo attached is of the mounts I am concerned about. On my ex-telstra syncro there
appears to be no provisions made for putting a seat belt here. Do I have to
remove the fuel tank (and gearbox and everything else!) to be able to weld here?
or just empty the fuel tank and weld with a fire extinguisher handy?!? More
importantly -
any other suggestions?

Hi Sam,

there should be steel plates factory-spot-welded to the back of these
points. so yes, if you
want to have original, you'd have to remove the tank and weld steel
plates - possible with thread(s)
already cut. i have seen other solutions, where people just welded a
steel plate to the flat area
(little higher than on the picture) and attached the actual seat bealt
with screws. should do it just
as fine and doesn't involve removing the tank - which is a real pain..
gearbox... tubes... tank... :)

Dear Sam,
Glad the photos were useful. I'm old enough to remember having to put seat belts in cars which were not designed for them. In those days it was a case of drilling through the metal in the appropriate place and then mounting the bolts of the belt  with as large a backing plate plus  washers as possible to spread the load on both sides. (Bunnings keep galvanised steel plate predrilled in various sizes.) Fortunately have never had to find out in earnest whether was strong enough. Possibly current regulations demand welding of a threaded nut although I'd suspect that a backing plate outside the body held in by the seat belt bolt would upset the structural integrity of the  body less than welding plus of course remove your fire worries. Presume the fuel tank would still allow you  to get a bolt in and that you would be careful drilling through the body metal if the tank is behind.Also rust treat and paint the drill hole to avoid corrosion.

Sam, that is the same setup as mine although it has additional flat steel plates to put a lap belt in the middle.

I’ve got an old beetle that I investigated getting rear seat belts put in. The fitting station planned to do exactly this with flat steel plates bolted through from underneath. There were kits available but they hadn’t done one for so long they were a special order and a bit pricey.

Maybe you can get your hand in on top of the tank to slide in some flat steel plate between the tank and the body?
