wet weather starting?

Hi, been having trouble with my syncro starting it wet weather it starts on any fine day but as soon as there is a bit of precipitation around it gets hard to start the more rain the harder to start. has anyone any ideas??

Phil

Phil,

How long since you changed your leads, distributor cap and rotor button? Mine ran like a dog in wet weather till I replaced all these items. It purred like a kitten till my current distributor problem.

These are usually fairly inexpensive items.

Good luck.

spark plug wires are what pop into my mind.
test them...
spray a fine mist of water on them with engine running ..
if it stumbles, plug wires are leaking.

also check spark plug gaps ..if they're too big it exacerbates the problem.

observe the engine running in total darkness...you see tiny spark running around..
it's tired/worn out spark plug wires.

generally ..you think of ignition for this scenario.

I'd be looking around the distributor high tension area. cap, rotor etc. The leads are copper and rarely fail. They normally fail because they get changes for cheaper brands as the correct leads are very expensive. The only part that usually fails is the spark plug connector. This can be checked visually and with an ohmeter the same as the rotor. Give the cap, coil and rotor a good clean with a soft cloth.

everyone seems to be heading in the same direction.... never changed the leads since i brought the syncro 3 years ago but the coil lead and spark leads are different, that must be telling me some thing.  I am onto it as soon as the weather clears...

Is the coil lead a blue one?
If so throw it away.

Phil,
When they arrive, would you please post here what brand and full model description, part number etc for the spark plugs you receive?

I can't get any sense at all from my local VAG centre on this issue ... a complete waste of space they are, even after giving them as they requested my VIN number.
Cheers.
Ken

The blue ones are carbon conductor and have the wrong connections. It's a meathead mechanic thing, just change the leads and don't look what you are doing. Make sure the the new leads and cap have the correct post in the connections.
