Wheel Alignment

All,
Used set of OME shocks on TheSamba, allow say $80 extra for shipping, do the maths, could be an economical solution for someone in Oz.

Double check with seller the model nos first though to be sure they are the correct ones for a stock standard syncro.

Cheers.

Scott,
Yes I'd love to learn how and carry out for myself an alignment check, if you have a home handymans procedure I could follow. My garage floor is level and flat.

My syncro still pulls to the left, regardless of road camber or not, even after my VW service people had a go at it, still didn't get it right, I know they lost money trying. To be fair, I think with a new set of tyres may eliminate one cause of pulling to the left, although again, my tyre wear looks pretty even.

Cheers. TIA.

If anyone can interpret that toe graph ..
let me know.

and ..if anyone who has a flat level surface to part their Syncro on,
and wants to check and adjust the front toe, check and adjust front camber ,
and check front castor using quite adequate 'shad tree mechanic' methods..
in inches btw, not degrees ...
let me know, and I'll tell you how.
You can at least check your front alignment to find out if it's in the ballpark..
and with patience and persistence, even get your front alignment where it belongs.

personally, I think letting any tyre store near my van or sycnro is a very risky thing to do.

David,

I will send the correct alignment specs to you direct.

Do NOT take any notice of any alignment place that tells you that the 2WD and 4WD alignment is the same.

You will have to print this out and take it with you.  I have yet to hear of any alignment place that has these figures.

They are taken from the VAG workshop manual, page 44.5

I can’t access it at the moment because the computer is compressing the drive that this file is on and I can’t interrupt it.

Hi Guys,
I`ve had my 91 Syncro for a month. The front tyres were massively worm (Toe in) on the original treads. I replaced all 4 tyres ( Toyo HO8) last week and the tyre dude said the drivers tyre was too far forward and it needed a wheel alignment. Looking at the front tyres this morning it appears I still have toe in and tyre wear inner front. It feels as if the front tyres cave in too much. I rang and booked to get the alignment rechecked tomorrow. Im confused with the different info out there on alignments with Syncros. Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Cheers David

Yes, the C shocks came to Australia on the earlier syncros, then TKM optioned the heavy duty shocks.

Hey Ken, google "vanagon diy wheel alignment " and click on to the one in the Samba. There is a step by step guide & it worked a treat for my syncro and my 2wd.Hope this helps , Eddie.

Hartmut,

Heh I'm not sure now of the priority order of the ToDo list projects for our fleet of syncros.

Like the engine, the clock, the engine timings, wheel alignments, grab handle, compression checks, R&R the shocks, making the coffee. Anything else?

Lets start with the coffee, the rest'll fall into place ....

A few days? Maybe a week tops?

Ken
