which mag wheels for my syncro.

I know a few people out there have 15" mag wheels on their vehicle and I am wondering what
my options are. I am extremely happy with the Mercedes steel rims, except that I am sick of
loosing hub caps. ( I ended up loosing 3 out of four on my last trip from SA to WA and that
was after cable tying them on. Anyway I am not keen on spraying them silver an am sick of
buying hub caps. Is the 15x7 (offset 35) Speedy Cougar the only choice. Has a photo been
published somewhere so that I can see what our vehicles look like. Finally I thought there was
something mentioned about special instructions on having the centre bored out at time of
manufacture to fit our vehicles. Please help.

Hi Nick,

I’ve run Audi A4 rims (15 x 6) on my syncro for nearly 10 years with no dramas. They seem to really suit the van well.  I also have a set (of 4 only) A8 rims.  I was going to run two sets for both on road and off road use, but now my van is on the market (new T5 Trakkadu 4motion coming), these are for sale as well.

Specs of the A8 wheels are: 15 x 7  ET45.  Weight rated 600Kg (should ideally be 625 for a syncro, but it’s close, unless you are constantly overloaded). They do require a small amount (less than 1mm I think) taken off the centre hole to fit the front, or  you can run 10mm spacers, as I do with the A4’s, which returns the offset to normal and eliminates the need to alter the wheels.  With any mags, and particularly if you use spacers, you may need longer studs.  I used Porsche studs on the front (65mm overall, if I remember) and moved the front studs (which are longer than the rears) to the back.

These were new ‘take-offs’ when I bought them, and have only been fitted up to the van to make sure they fit, but not driven any distance, so are in perfect condition.  They owe me $400, and are fitted with (barely roadworthy) tyres, which at least allows you to see how they suit your van.  I’d be looking for $300 for them.  I can pmail pictures if you are interested. I hope a Melbourne location is not too difficult for you.

Nick,

Can't help but observe that the standard VW hubcaps never come off unless you hit something incredibly hard.
