Francesca,
If this is occurring at full lock, it could be the relief valve in the end of the steering rack. Its purpose is to depressurize the system at full lock so that the ram does not keep trying to push the rack beyond its stops.
My Syncro had this when I first bought it – it had stood unused for three years – but gradually cleared itself.
If this is the problem with yours, it can be circumvented by stopping the steering wheel before full lock.
If that is the problem, you are not doing any harm by driving it, but it will need to be investigated at some stage.
Les

whining power steering pumps
Hi there,
We've had a noisy power steering pump for some time now (whining, particularly when parking), and are going to have it investigated shortly. Just so that we can be a bit clued up in advance, do any of you have some insight into the likely cause of the problem.? I gather it could be something as minor as a faulty seal (o-ring?), but that problems can also arise with the lines, which entails lots of expense in replacing lines, both in parts and labour. If it is the unit itself which is beyond repair, what is the likely cost of obtaining either a new or used replacement? And where would we be best off sourcing one? Any thoughts on the matter appreciated! I should say that the power steering functions perfectly well, but we are just getting rather sick of the simfonietta.
Regards,
Francesca.

A slipping belt can also produce such a noise

Before you get too excited, get some PS fluid and top up. 99% of the time in my experience, fluid is too low.
There is also a flow restrictor of sorts in one of the hoses. I believe it is on the high pressure side. Of
The hose has been replaced with one without this unseen baffle, the steering will sound like a screaming Mimi when turned.
I'm betting your are low on fluid rather than having a real mechanical problem.
Cheers,
