Hi Josh,

Since you couldn’t open the link to Wikipedia answers, the answer to the question” what 4wd van is better than a T3 syncro” :

not one

mike

Hah! I asked that question of wiki many months ago; was it you that answered Mike? Its still a good question - and I suspect the answer still true. You'd think though that they'd have come up with something in the last three decades or so since Syncros were being cooked up.

Cheers
Nigel

As it happens Wiki has just sent another answer - maybe that prompted this thread? sorry i've been travelling and not following closely. It suggested a '85 Range Rover!:

No, it’s not me who put the first answer in wiki

Didn’t know a range rover was a van ? and if it was, it doesn’t outperform  a Syncro does it J ?

mike

Mike, maybe only in a straight line on bitumen (with it's V8, or thesedays, Supercharged V8)

It can’t be a Range Rover………they use Lucas bits.

Here is why:

anybody who ever had anything to do with Lucas made in England electrical bits will love this one :-)

The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."

Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they do still have a claim to "sudden, unexpected darkness."

Lucas -- inventor of the first intermittent wiper.

Lucas -- inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The three-position Lucas switch -- DIM, FLICKER and OFF.

The other three switch settings -- SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.

The original anti-theft devices -- Lucas Electric products.

"I've had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob...."

If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.

Did you hear about the Lucas-powered torpedo? It sank.

It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm's Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.

Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner, "How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?" He replied, "It doesn't matter which one you use, nothing happens anyway!"

Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.

Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.

Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes refrigerators, too.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the short circuit.

Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: "Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant."

Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

Cheers

Reiner

I used to own a Range Rover. I still have 3 defective alternators at home.

I was working on the electricals one day and came across an inline fuse under the dash. Apparently they had a problem with fires caused by the screws being too long in the tail lights and shorting out the wiring causing overheating right back to the front of the car. So instead of changing the screws, they just put in a fuse for the tail lights. True story!

Hey Gary,

A bit hidden in the forum.  The van is a bit different from when I first advertised it.  I ratted all the gear off it for my syncro, racks, curtains, awning, etc. So its basically a standard transporter now.  The 4 spd was rebuilt but not by a vw mechanic which I will not do again.  Spent $1500 to still have what seems to be lazy syncro noises in 3rd and 4th gears.  I went and looked at a 5 speed box down NSW yesterday for $800, but we might have a look a getting someone to look at it who knows what a vw is and how they work.   Anyway, give my old man (Bart Snr) a call on 0418 779 478. Its located at his home/dealership in geebung or just google Bartley J Olsen motor dealer.

Awsome. ...Bart
