Windscreen seal

We have had v. heavy rain here in Camden and Deborah noticed some water dripping on her right foot when driving.

Sure enough, there is water ingress up under the dash all the way up to the windscreen it seems.

Examining the windscreen closely externally, it seems the decorative (silvery/brown) part of the seal does not meet up in the middle between the washer nozzles (ie, in centre). Maybe there should be a small silver metal part there to "join" this part of the seal, however, the gap seems to big. The windscreen was replaced over a year ago and perhaps has been like this since then (I haven't noticed).

Any ideas on best approach to solving this leak?

Regards
Mark
Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Windscreen seal
Hi Mark

My windscreen was replaced recently too and I noticed a bit of water dripping into the footwells after a downpour the other day. My screen rubber is a solid piece and doesn’t have any decorative trim though. The side window rubbers in the van part have all shrunk and have a gap at the edges but the metal trim is still there so I planned on a little black sikaflex to seal them up.

In the past I’ve bought a proprietary product for fixing leaking screens. A liquid you pour carefully around the edge and it soaks in and seals the leaks. Designed for older cars with cracked windscreen rubbers I guess. It did work. Maybe try a car parts place for something like that.

A quick google brought up this which is different.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Gary

Assuming that new rubber is available (standard T3, so it should be), there is no question.  A new seal, correctly fitted, beats any form of interim measure sealing.

Most parts are still available. It's just the dealers that are a problem.

Thanks Phil - before ringing around - any recommendations in the Sydney area for both finding and fitting? I am in Camden...

Am keen to fix properly as it is in good condition and want to keep it that way :-)

Just try the dealer at Liverpool first for a price. Then try Muller & Muller.
Try to get a German one if possible.

Thanks Phil - will try McGraths at Liverpool. Yes, I think it is this chrome strip that is causing the issue, as there is a small section missing, revealing a small gap. At least I hope it is this causing the issue as the new replacement should then solve. I assume the Caravelle version will be more expensive...

Do you know if there is any way, at time of ordering to know or ensure it will be the German product? (as almost eveything at McGraths et al seems to need ordering when related to T3, even Pastel White touch up paint!).

Mark,

The windscreen seals are widely available worldwide. Here in the US, we can get the original FEBI brand from Germany as well as some version made in Asia. Frankly, I have only been able to find the FEBI brand. They sell here between $39-$109 (USD).I am happy to pay $39 all day long from my local retailer. This is for the and post-1988 US models & non-GL version which does not have the chrome strip. I've never had occasion to locate the chromies because I don't like how they look. Shipping to OZ from here runs about US$23 via our US Postal Flat Rate boxes. I can fetch this on your behalf if you like.

As for that grove in the rubber, you can replace it with any number of things w/o impacting anything but the appearance. I have used nylon piping used for making screen windows. I have seen people use old spark plug cables too. I have also left them out completely w/o adverse effects but some swear the windscreen does not seal well enough w/o it. I have heard more people saying it is not needed. You be the judge.

Windscreen installation is a snap if you know what to do. Here's some quickie instructions for those who want to try it.

1) First and most important, clean the mating surfaces where the windscreen will fit. Any crud leftover there will not allow proper sealing.
If your windscreen rubbers were cut-off with a razor blade during the removal process, check to make sure the paintwork was not nicked in the process. If so, retouching the paint now will save a lot of rust bubbles later.

2) Install the rubber onto the windscreen. Chrome strip needs to be installed at this step.

3) You need to get a strong braided cord such as those used on Venetian blinds. Run the cord into the inside grove with end overlapping and going past long enough so you can grab it. This overlapping section should be midpoint at the top of the windscreen.

4) Press entire assembly onto the opening starting from the bottom edge.

5) Once the entire windscreen is press fit into opening have a helper lean hard but evenly from the outside. Too much or uneven pressure can crack the glass.

6) From inside slowly pull the cord one end at a time working the seal in as you go. Some sort of lubricant will help this process go smoother.

7) When you get to the last few centimeters switch your operation to the other end of the cord. As you pull in the opposite direction, the seal should sink into the opening.

8) Once done, go outside with your helper and press evenly over the edges to ensure you have a good seal. Judicious use of rubber mallet can help.

Do not just look at the windscreen seal as the culprit. Often times, the radio antenna (aerial) seal goes bad. You would be amazed at how much water such a small area can admit. The front fresh air intake vent can also be prone to admitting water during high winds especially when the vehicle is parked on a slight downward grade.

Regards,

BenT

If you get it from McGraths it should be a genuine German rubber.
The chrome strip is not included and does not cause leaks.
If you are fitting it yourself, let me know and I will give you some tips, but be aware that you may break the screen.

Let me know the prices.

Thanks Phil - Will make enquiries.... Interesting you say it is not included and does not cause leaks (or the absence of), as the missing section at the bottom of the windscreen is the only obvious ingress point.

Ben suggested perhaps poor antenna mount  or  if parked  downhill  in gales....  Definitely wet right up under the dash up to windscreen point, reaching up underneath from drivers side -  electrics slightly wet, cross member wet etc, which lead to carpet under and around accelerator becoming wet..

Any other clues as to what may cause the ingress - admittedly, the rain has been very heavy and it was the first time i've not easily made it to work due flooding. Then again, the Syncro is almost always garaged - it couldn't be on this particular night, however, I did get the nose  under the verandah as soon as I noticed it.

If you get it from McGraths it should be a genuine German rubber.
The chrome strip is not included and does not cause leaks.
If you are fitting it yourself, let me know and I will give you some tips, but be aware that you may break the screen.

Let me know the prices.

Mark,

The channel which the holds the chrome trim is not supposed to go all the way through. It may appear open but not likely to admit any water unless someone has perforated it there.

Wet at the driver's side definitely points to antenna gasket. It's easy enough to test by spraying the area with a garden hose. This is a common problem in the US. Our antenna or on OUR driver's side which is on the left. Is your antenna on the right?

Cheers,

BenT
Mark, if you want me to have a look at it, I live at Henry Lawson Drive, East Hills and am off work and housebound at the moment. It's about 30 minutes from Camden.

Hi Phil

Sorry to hear you are off work - I'll see if I can make it tomorrow, else perhaps Saturday would work for you? Also may have a little more time Saturday for a cup of tea etc..

Fellas,
You seem to have this well under control but just in case I picked up an"EMPI' 2006/7 catalogue from a Hoppers Crossing Vic VW wrecker (Wolfsburg Automotive)who told me he was about to shift to Geelong. Under "the right part for the job" it states " window seals are not all the same. The correct profile is critical for the job. Early deluxe models" (the catalogue covers all VWs) "have C molding trims, then moved to plastic T moldings. The rubber profile is different. Incorrect use of the wrong seal will result in poor fitment. We specify the best quality rubber and demand the correct mixing time. Tight corners are heat pressed as per original VW manufactured seals. This process is unique to our product."
I think EMPI parts are probably distributed through a number of after market VW people possibly including your McGraths. The catalogue  has a picture labelled T25(T3) Caravelle transporter etc. and a listing for a 'deluxe chrome T mold' and separately a 'front windscreen seal standard. '
Surprisingly they also list a 'stoneguard lower half windscreen protector' and can you believe a' Sun Visor external aluminium mesh'. My long deceased aunt had one of those on a Morris Minor! I did a google search for Wolfsburg Automotive as their web site came up unavailable and only found a blog saying that the proprietor turned up to a VW meet this year in a T1 Marius? Deutz converted fire engine and last year in a Schwimmwagen. That man has class!  Could be sorely tempted to trade my Syncro for one of those even if the windscreen did leak.
Sorry to digress.Hope you can fix your windscreen. I presume when you had it replaced there was no sign of a rust hole. As an ex UK car I fear this is more likely to be Gary's problem.
Keep us posted. I'm about to have a holiday in the land of the long white cloud but apparently no T3 syncros. If I had a Schwimmwagen I could have driven across the Tasman.
Cheers

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the contribution - v. interesting reading.

Good luck in New Zealand - I hope your vehicle has good windscreen seals due the long white precipitous clouds. Should make you look forward to going back to Melb! (just kidding - Deb has some family in NZ - feeling qualified to comment here)

PS - take your snake repellant just in case.... I know there are apparently none there, but it should just again prove it's effectiveness.

Sorry to hear you are off work - I'll see if I can make it tomorrow, else perhaps Saturday would work for you? Also may have a little more time Saturday for a cup of tea etc..

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Windscreen seal
Roger how dare you suggest I have (gulp) rust? I’ll have you know my van fled blighty’s salty dampness on its first birthday and spent the next 20 years tucked up in a garage in Canberra. It only ventured outside to be crashed into fence posts and scraped down walls occasionally. I like to think of it as texture or as the rat look enthusiasts call “patina”.

Have a great trip to NZ...

Cheers
