Can anybody out there suggest an Auto Electrician who could do a harness conversion for a Subi 2.5 going into a Syncro ?

Contact Miles at AM Auto in Noosaville www.amauto.com.au
He has done many and knows Subarus & VW T3s backwoods.
Just had a low km EJ25 fitted and full GB and diff rebuild by Ron Schmidt at Kempsey.
Has transformed the bus.

Power difference is great compared to the waterboxer. Much better torque and plenty of power on tap. Accelerates strongly from 90-100kph even with 0.73 4th gear. Economy on the trip home from Noosa was 11.5 - 11.7 l/100km (about 24-25 mpg).
Have yet to have the local gov inspection for the new motor. Also have Tiguan wheels and new tyres to fit etc. Will post full rundown plus pics in the next few weeks. My Syncro is a Trakka Gold Pak purchased back in April.

What about hills with the 0.73 4th gear?
I.e. - the big hills - can she go up in 4th and keep speed fully loaded?
Ronnie is a champion gearbox repairer - he did a fantastic job on mine.

What wheels are you running? or did you run on the trip home and the tyres?
Big wheels and aggressive off-road tyres definitely increase fuel consumption especially in city driving.

Hi Hamish.
I'm in WA. Been in contact with Tom Shiels. Seems like he knows his stuff. He's on loom number 350 or something crazy. I've bought a 2003 Ej25 with 66000 kms and good service history.
Here we go.

HI Bruce,
many thanks for that info. I'm curious as to whether that's the only gear change you made and what tyre size you're running. Do you know what sort of rpm you're doing at 100 - 110 kmh ?
Look forward to hearing more.

Current tyres are half worn 195R14 on OEM wheels. Plan to go to 225/75R16 Cooper A/T3 on the 6.5x16 Tiguan wheels. Need to have the centre bores taken from 57 to 67mm to fit over the front hubs. Also needs longer studs. Current tyres are 660 OD and about 95 kph at 3000 rpm. Will do most hills maintaining 80-90kph.With the new tyres (OD 746) it will go to 106 kph at 3000 rpm. Only time will tell how it handles the hills in 4th. GB ratios are 3.78, 1.88, 1.08 & 0.73. Third is 24 kph/1000 rpm, so what 4th can't handle, third will do at a trot (96 kph at 4000 rpm).
Hope this gives you a taste. Will give a full rundown with pics once the bus has passed Gov inspection and the new wheels and boots are on.
Cheers,
Bruce.

It would be great to hear how it goes fully laden or even empty with the big wheels and tyres.
Note big wheels give a much better rolling diameter but they are much heavier and have a much grater wind and rolling resistance to the original wheels with road tyres.
You will notice a difference.
Some photos of the install and the upgraded wheels/ tyres would also be great!.
Thanks,
Skot

Hi Bruce,
very informative thanks. If you can post pics to the website that would help as I can't see them otherwise.
Look forward to a further update.
Sounds like you've put some thought into this project. Good luck.
