The other thing is if you get to dubbo you could try that guy that helped me when I bought mine. He was grumpy and annoying but is probably more likely to have parts for a t3. His details were in the workshop file but I can't find the file? Greg E

Les, Really sorry to hear of your troubles. I would not jump down the electronics path just yet. As always in a break down you need to check for spark and fuel. Loss of spark may make the crank sound slightly faster. A VERY HIGH cranking speed tells me that you have very little compression. Two things can cause this in my experience. The first is a mechanical issue with the valves (or pistons - unlikely). Or excess fuel in the engine (flooded).
Lets take the fuel side first. After having tried to start it remove the fuel pump fuse and hold the throttle half way and crank it. If it eventually starts and stops, or at least sounds like it is going to start, it is flooded. The most likely cause will be a stuck injector (or may be a failed fuel pressure regulator).
With the valves you need to first ascertain that the cam is turning. Unclip a rocker cover and crank. The other thing to do would be readjust the valves.
In short firstly stick a screw driver up a high tension lead and check spark then get back to us. Greg E

Theo,
Do you still have your MV analyser and is it still for sale?
I am in a heap of bother!!!
I am driving from Melbourne to Uralla (NSW), I am half way up the Newell Highway .   For the first time ever, I got several occasions when the motor had a bit of a cough and very brief power fade.  It was something that I could live with until I got to Uralla.
But . . .
I stopped for fuel just south of Dubbo, got back in the Syncro, got very high cranking speed – but it simply will not fire.  The ECU is clearly not getting some information that it needs to fire up.
About my only option is to get it trucked to the VW dealer in Dubbo and keep my fingers crossed!!
But this has highlighted the wisdom of carrying an analyser!!

Les,

I agree with yours and Bills summation of the source of the problem.

A Hall sender is a very likely culprit - similar symptoms I had and same problem.

Best of luck.

Greg,

The high cranking speed would be down to heat soak – straight off the highway, shut off the engine, fill, go to the toilet, etc and the engine would still be at highway running temperature with the coolant pump not running.  I mentioned that in the context of there being ample cranking speed.

Bill mentioned the Hall sender and that is at the top of my list of suspects.  Whilst driving, it continued to function; after a stop, it gave up.

Regarding flooding, my attempted restart was as usual – turn key, no pedal.  It always fires instantly.  I kept trying the no pedal initially but when it was obvious that it wasn’t firing, I tried giving it some pedal but the result was the same.

How likely is it to be a valve problem in these circumstances? I entered the town at reduced speed (50 limit), and drove into the servo with normal engine, i.e. no unusual engine noises.

Les

Hartmut,

Mine karked it about a year and a half ago and I replaced it so that is very low on the probability list.  I hope that it is the prime suspect – the Hall sender – and that I can get back on the road quickly.  All this happened late on Saturday so there was no chance of getting attention before tomorrow morning.

I might try Heinz to see if, by some remote chance, he has one on hand.  If it can be verified that it is the Hall sender, I can get John Goodison to get one into the Australian Post service.

Hi Les,

Sorry to hear about your problems

Whenever I read of Syncro’s mishaps and think about my own van and wonder what could go wrong next.

I can lend you the analyser however it needs to be hardwired/soldered  into the ECU.

By that time, with Greg’s help, you could be on your way again.

Please let us know how you went. In a few weeks’ time we will be heading up the Newell Hwy on the way to Brisbane.

The local  VW Dealer was not much help for T3 parts.

On the Syncro Workshop File is the other VW mechanic listed that Greg used on his way back from Cairns.

I hope you get it sorted pronto.

Theo

Les. If it is the hall sender they are a bit tricky to fit. A few points to consider. I'm pretty sure the new hall senders being supplied dont fit straight on. You will need to use some of your old sender. Some fine soldering required. Its easy to fit the new one 180 degrees out. So take particular care when dismantling. If this were to happen you can still start the engine by moving the leads around 180 deg. Anyway i think it is a bit tricky. If you could get hold of a complete working dissy(anyone got one to lend les) its a very quick install and back on the road. Bill

Hartmut,

That would be brilliant but the delivery time becomes a factor because Dubbo is not considered to be a regional centre.  It could take three days but I still would need to know how long it would take from Melbourne ; I should be able to get direct air freight from there.

I think that I will have to call both the Dubbo VW people and Heinz in the morning to see who is best to take it to.  I have a feeling that it might be Heinz.

It still depends on confirmation that it is indeed the Hall sender, of course.

Bill,

Thanks for that information.  I would certainly prefer that it be done by someone who has done it before – I certainly haven’t.

Les, the analyser can't do anything that a simple multimeter can' do, they just do it more easily, from the driver's seat.

Check the spark and fuel delivery first. Most problems are caused by a loose electrical connection, a bad earth, water in the fuel or a blocked fuel filter.

Your symptoms indicate an intermittent electrical problem. Sometimes wires can look ok, even when broken.

Grab a multimeter and carry out the tests described in the workshop manual.

Pay special attention to the low tension wire between the coil and distributor, and the plug on the side of the distributor. They might look ok, but wiggle them as you test for continuity. They often fail.

Check and clean each connection individually as you follow the test procedures. You should be able to isolate the problem in an hour or two.

Don't forget to clean and test the earth cable from engine to body.

Cheers, Roger (Beetle) Bayley.
