Thanks Uwe.
We all appreciate your efforts.
Cheers,

Hi Scott
The forum software is up and running as a shell, I just talked to Jon and he should be able to attempt a data load (from the yahoo group) sometime this week, and I need to finalize the email server side of things as well.
Once that is done we can trial/test it with a few members before going live.
Getting close, Uwe

Just checking on progress with this in this ridiculously busy time of year.
Thanks,

Hi Uwe,
Sounds good. I have some ideas on the forum side of things and made some progress on this.
Ping me your phone number and we can have a chat if you would like.

Scott,
They are great machines and their troubles can be overcome, the knowledge in the forum is a testament to that. Staying standalone and using www.syncro.com.au, it couldn't get any better, then again also going to a modern forum platform will be the icing, the whole experience should be a lot friendly and easier to use from any device.
It will bring a new way of doing things meaning a little bit of relearning, but moving as an addon to another forum would do the same.
Ready to help with the reboot when everyone is ready.
Uwe

Uwe,
All of that sounds fantastic to me.
Jon has been great downloading all the data and photos but he is not set up to get a new format running and neither Greg nor I can.
I would much rather it be someone in the group directly that a friend or relative of the group and someone with the resources and time.
I would love if this stand alone syncro forum does continue.
The specific knowledge and interest in these awesome but troublesome vehicles is vital to us.
Cheers,
Scott

Hi Jon
I can help if needed, I've spoken to Greg about it before as well. IT and software development is my daily routine, I run online services and manage virtual servers for some clients amongst everything else.
I created and run the current setup for type901.org, this has a simple front end and then the primary part is the forum (a vBulletin system). I you want to go in a similar direction with some forum software, opensource or commercial, on our own server in Australia controlled by the admins and no one else, then I can certainly help there as well as with any other plans you have.
Now if we could get www.syncro.com.au onboard and add the forum, that would be ideal.
Cheers, Uwe

Hi Rowan,
Thanks for the efforts. For your and everyones information, I have successfully downloaded all historical messages, files and photos with the view to moving these to alternative forum soon. This is something that has been on the cards for a few years now as Yahoo have been making noises about closing Groups down for a while. I worked on getting this started a couple of years ago but life got in the way. Les and I spoke about this and Greg, Scott and Mark (current admins) have all been involved.
I will try and get something up and running soon. There may be a small yearly cost associated with running a new site so if anyone is looking to sponsor this or contribute, please let me know. Also if anyone would like to help out then please also shout out (may need some volunteers to help with testing).
Jon.

Ok Guys,
Liam started downloading the files and Yahoo servers kicked him off after 700 messages. There is a lockout for 3 hours after each 700 messages of 56995 messages are downloaded so it may take several days to download them all that way.
I recommend following the instructions on groups.io for transfer which requires a Moderator to follow the steps diligently. Also it will cost for premium membership for one year to make it go smoothly $220
Again the Moderator needs to take the steps to save the group by following the steps outlinedbelow by Derek at https://groups.io/yahootransfer
It's not hard to set up a Go Fund Me page to raise the funds required.

Yahoo Groups (the operator of this email list and resource) is partly shutting down today, Monday, October 28, 2019. As of this date, the website is scheduled to start becoming non-responsive and users will no longer be able to upload FILES to the FILES area. The incredible history of older emails, which probably represents a bazillion hours of advanced engineering, literally a priceless archive, will start to become inaccessible. An article about what is happening is here: https://lifehacker.com/how-to-save-and-migrate-your-yahoo-groups-data-before-i-1839172243
We will have a few more days to try to grab the contents of the group off the web so we can preserve the priceless resources buried in its history. The entire database is scheduled to be DELETED on December 14, 2019. However, 3rd parties are asking that to save the data in the FILES sections and other data that submissions should be made by DECEMBER 1 or else data in the groups will be lost.
ADMINISTRATORS of the groups can port the data from their groups over by signing up with groups.io which is a website created by the founder of egroups, which is essentially the founding website for Yahoo Groups. Sign up here to get your transfer request in, and do it by December 1, 2019. There is some indication that the photos in the archives or FILES areas may already be going bad as I write.
If you are an administrator of this group and you can’t face this issue because you have moved on in life or have other pressing demands and can’t do it right away, I guess I will volunteer myself to help if you want. What you do is to add me (or some other trusted person) to be administrator of this group and that person can try to handle the transfer, following the instructions at Log In . If we cannot track down all the administrator of this and the related groups, it sounds like the only other option is for somebody to laboriously download the data themselves manually, which may be an impossible task. So it is with some urgency for us to waken the administrators who may have gone dormant. I have all the emails going back for all related groups to 1994 on my hard drive, but probably not in a form that is practical for me to restore to the community in a reasonable amount of time. Accordingly, there is some urgency for us to get the administrators going on this and to notify us publically that they are on the case.
If you are reading this and are of an independent sort, you can also try to protect yourself by going to the FILES area of some or all of the groups and try to download what is there onto your hard drive and then maybe we can find a venue online to re-upload the content. I noticed that there is also some other efforts to make export tools, such as on GITHUB.
Note that the email functionality of these groups will not stop working, but the web interface, and content search functionality will stop working and the FILES and PHOTOS will be deleted.
Related affected major groups with outstanding archives include the list below. Of these, I am administrator only of the first group, so I am going to try to groups.io/yahootransfer process now.
