Yeagarup sand dunes WA

Hello, I am planning a trip in 2 weeks to Yeagarup sand dunes near Pemberton WA. I am told it is steep, sandy and about 200m long with a sharp bend half way up where you lose momentum.

Has anyone from WA or anywhere else made it back up the track at Yeagarup from the beach in a syncro?

I am curious if my standard syncro will make it up such a hill with the tyres down and if so what gear would be best to use? Is the speed you hit the bottom of the hill important? Thanks in Advance.... Greg
Greg,

I don't know the dune area but I am sure your syncro will do it if you let your tyres down sufficiently and get a good run up.

If you fail the first attempt just start the syncro again and reverse back over your tracks. I like first gear in those situations, it is no where near as slow as the Grawl gear but you still retain good revs.

Good revs and low tyre pressures will get you home in most cases.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Greg,

I've done it a couple of times. Last time I went down the west side of the Warren river, and up the east side.
Both have long steep soft sand down to the ocean.
Making it up the east side required 10psi and max revs in first to get up. And then I had to make the last 5m in Granny gear.
Absolutely maxing out the syncro.
I have 15" wheels and lifted suspension, both of which help in the sand.
Give it a go, just remember it's about power and motion.
There's no sharp bend until you've made the top.

I can send you some pics if you like.

Hi Mark

Pics would be good and if possible could you email these to my address. gregnavarro@westnet.com.au as I cant open pics on this website for some reason I havent worked out.

If for some reason I cant get back up the hill from the beach is there another way out?

Greg

Hi guys,

there are 3 pics posted under "south west" which are yeagarup dunes.
This place has on three occasions made me have to have 3 goes at getting up dunes. By far the toughest Syncro journey I've made.
Love to catch up with any other WA members if you're in the Fremantle area.

Cheers,

Mark,
Nice pics .... thanks for sharing.
Traversing these dunes, any idea what your all up vehicle weight is? Ball park if you don't.
Cheers.

Good question Ken,

what does a syncro weigh ? Mine is a Caravelle converted to a camper.
I guess around 2.25 tonnes ?
These dunes have to be seen to be believed.
One of the prettiest places in WA.
And one of the few occasions where I really felt the need for a bit more torque.. still dreaming of that Subaru 2.5 motor when the wasserboxer dies.

Mark,

Ok thanks for that. So you're one of us albeit on the light side of Oz maxxed out syncros .... the 2 to 3 ton variety.

The reason for my query was because I remain bemused at the antics of super duper syncros on youtube or special events in US or SA etc where they virtually climb vertical walls and other wondrous feats, only to discover they have everything known to man to enhance power and climbing ability and so further to that end, these wall climbers etc are pretty much otherwise devoid of extraneous weight burden i.e., fully kitted out camper setups such as we have in Oz.

My syncro remains guilty as charged ... too much flab. I reckon I'd be pretty dubious about tackling Yeagarup sand dunes.

Cheers.

Ken
