15" Steel Rims on syncros

Hey guys

I know that there are a lot of topics about rim/tyre combination.

I just purchased a set of Golf MK5 Steel Rims in 6jx15 5/112 ET47.

ET45 would fit with a 5/16 spacer. These ones here should do with a 1/4inch spacer.

What do you guys think or probably have for experiences.

Cheers

Seb

Sebastian,

Spacers are illegal under ADR’s.   If you have a prang and the insurance assessor finds spacers, it can be used to deny payment.   The same applies to non-standard wheel offsets.

It really pays to maintain the designed offset on the front because the entire suspension geometry is designed at a specific offset.   Changing the offset changes the loading on the suspension and wheel bearings.

The bigger the ET the thicker spacer that's needed is my understanding.

I found some super nice mercedes 5 X 112 ( bolt pattern ) spacers..
they come in 10 and 12mm thickness.
wasn't too hard to find them online.
I lucked out and got some new looking used ones at my local tire dealer.
With longer studs they were pretty right.

Center hole size is sometimes an issue.  Easier to deal with on an alloy wheel than a steel.
There are 'real' T3 Van steel fifteen inch wheels of course , available new.

If you did put spacers on (which are illegal) then you may have to replace your studs with longer ones. I'd get a set of Mefros.

Allright, so... i shouldn't use them. 1. because the Bus is too heavy for them. 2. Spacers are illegal.

Dammit

Somebody wants some 15inch Golf MK5 rims ;-)

I didn't think about the GVM. Like i said...still learning.

Where the hell could i get some 15 inch rims?? I asked around in ALice...nothing.

Overseas is too expensive too ship.

Somebody has some used ones or any contacts?

If you are all coming up here, i would like to have the van sitting on 15 inch rims ;-)

Cheers

You could always get the standard centres welded into 15 inch rims by Eastern Wheel works in Melbourne.  They look great and you can run the standard hubcaps,

The only problem is that you cannot upgrade the brakes, unlike with Mefro wheels. Are upgraded 14" wheels any cheaper than Mefros?

you mentioned shipping cost as being quite high ..
and ......Van Cafe sells fine 15 and 16 inch steel vanagon wheels.

I got my south african steel 15's from them a few years ago when they still had those..
I'm super pleased with them.
the van cafe wheels are roughly $ 100 each ..
and you only have to buy them once.
shipping cost would be the main issue.

as for bigger front brakes ..
sure ultimately desired...but ...........I have seldom wished for more braking power in a T3 van myself..
with the exception of towing ..yes, then you need more braking ..
but otherwise .....at least for my style of driving and  braking ...
I'm basically satisfied.   Sure ............they could be better ............but it's seldom an issue for me.
 I'm pretty easy on equipment..
seldom do I ever get into any 'not enough braking power available. '

Hi Greg
I am interested in Tiguan wheels also. Do you have a photo of your van with these rims on it. Also are there any other probs with clearance, offset (not even sure what offset means)? Greg

Hi Greg, photos attached. No need for spacers or longer studs. The offset of standard 14" rims is et30, 16" genuine were et34. These are et33. As far as clearance goes with these rims that is mostly a conversation about tyre size. I have 225/70/16 which is the biggest possible without spacing. I would not recommed going that big, 215/70/16 or smaller. If you do get a set I would be up for splitting another set to get a spare, let me know. Greg E

Almost forgot to mention you will need to order special wheel nuts (small radius), and have centre bore machined. If you get a set I will give you the details.

As far as clearance goes with these rims that is mostly a conversation about tyre size. I have 225/70/16 which is the biggest possible without spacing. I would not recommed going that big, 215/70/16 or smaller. If you do get a set I would be up for splitting another set to get a spare, let me know. Greg E

Where do you get the small radius wheel nuts from?
Thanks Ben. Hi Phill, If you have spent any time looking at the Samba, especially the wheel fitment threads you would have seen a member called "loogy", his real name is Chris and he owns this site. I have just ordered the Powerflex lower control arm bushes off him. He is super nice to deal with and prices are very reasonable. It seems all the modern vw/audi wheels have gone to this small radius. Greg E

Greg,

They look great - I am surprised how good they look on a syncro - very nice.

Great choice.

I know my Mk4 Golf factory alloy wheels have a load rating of 650kgs each - what do these ones rate at? It should be cast into the wheel.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Greg
I am interested in Tiguan wheels also. Do you have a photo of your van with these rims on it. Also are there any other probs with clearance, offset (not even sure what offset means)? Greg

Greg,thanks for that link.
I have poly lower control arm bushes.I bought them from South Africa.
T3 Technique may be an easier option. When I asked Stuart about poly rear control arm bushes he said that he has never replaced them, and didnt have any, they would have to be made custom.
