Been a learning curve with the van. Over the last two years ive replaced every bearing and bush, cvs, starter motor, b6 shocks, shwenk springs, gearbox/front diff rebuild, drive shaft ect…
Has been going solid then at the weekend engine died…l/h head gasket.
I have the engine out striped down to the block, already has pretty fresh amc heads by the looks of it.
Im in Brisbane - Who is the go to for WBX rebuild?..
There’s been quite positive comments in recent times about Andy Ho, mobile 0488377580, a T3 WBX2.1 engine reconditioner/rebuilder at Annangrove in North-West Sydney. Such talent gets rarer by the day, so not to be sneezed at.
Read for example the following thread about one particular WBX2.1 engine build he did not so long ago, might help your selection.
Hi Joe,
Pretty sure members here with original motors would be interested to hear back from you how you got on concerning positive feedback/possibilities for WBX2.1 engine reconditioning/rebuild available by Andy Ho, either for in short term and/or for future reference. TIA. Cheers.
I still have a bunch of WBX 2.1 parts available if you find you need anything internal while rebuilding.
Good pistons/cylinder jackets, complete crank + rods, etc
This was a subject in another forum the other day. Kolbenschmidt heads are actually AMC heads.
There was a picture where the AMC label was milled off (but not all of it) and rebranded with KS.
Hi Richard,
No luck so far mate, Quotes from $4k - $12k for a full rebuild. Im saving pennys and patching the current motor up lol…Time to learn how to replace head seals yay!
Hi Joe
New to forum. We have owned a 89 T3 Syncro for over a decade and travelled around Oz in that time. Currently our Digifant 2.1 ltr is terminal so we are looking at our where too options = sell as is or transplant.
You may find helpful Micks Motors ( 07 32668133 ) and Conti Engines ( Gary 0448313177 ).
If you are doing this yourself, there is a late T3 WBX in Newcastle which has a buggered head stud but was rebuilt not long before disaster. He wants $300 for it.
A long way from you, however there would be an EGo courier in Newcastle and one somewhere near you surely. They are very reasonable for transport costs.
Thanks Scott, could be a viable option, but sounds similar to the motor I have. I have not had a very critical look at it, but can already see signs the re-builder had no attention to detail.
At least that one is more complete. To swap for the Syncro, what is different?
Coolant pipes, thermostat housing, exhaust, engine mount (bar)?? And for me fitting AC compressor and power steering pump.
Ah, that is good to know!! So that is the only difference?
Not a big effort, but I hate disturbing exhausts once fitted and sealed. There is always something that does not fit on or line up, or siezed up with exhaust systems…
Scott, could you please send me Rudi’s number? I never thought to ask him. I think he had a few spare engines.
I have a pair of spare AMC heads - they were on my old motor I took out. All valves are good and they’ve been skimmed to clean the surface.
When originally refitted my VW garage thought they leaked and replaced them with new ones, only to find it still leaked - from a crack in the left case…
So I think they are fine, and yours for the price of shipping them to you if you want them.
I may also still have a Syncro dipstick complete, lemme know if interested.
Cheers
Gaetan
