4th (5th) Gear

After a bit of confusion turns out I need a new 4th gear. The one with 48 teeth to maintain the correct ratio. Weddles have none in stock so I have been searching the usual sites to no avail so far. Have tried GoWesty, JustKampers, Tristar Connection, Bernt Jaeger, BusStop, VWHeritage parts. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is an issue for anyone wanting a gearbox rebuild. I don't know when Weddles will have them back in stock.

Peter from Port (on my Trek bike at present which is a lot less fun than a Syncro!!!)

Albins?

Cheers,

Skot

Peter,

Ring Albins direct, ask for the sales manager.  I can’t remember his name because I haven’t spoken to him for five years or so.    At that time, there was a world wide shortage of crown wheels and pinions and he said just to ring direct; any member of the Syncro_T3_Australia group could get whatever they needed.

Tell him that you are member of the Syncro_T3_Australia group and mention my name.

Peter. Try Alan at "stokers vw parts" northern nsw. He got me a crown wheel and pinion when they were hard to get. Ronnie has a close relationship with albins, cant he get the 4th gear for you. Bill
All, Albins is contractually bound to sell all of their products to Weddle in the US. They are not supplying anybody in Oz.
Based on info I have received from a reliable source, but approaching Albins would be the way.

Think the guy at albins is Hamish. Got all my gears from them about 5 years ago and at that time they said that they were allowed to sell direct to only Aussie customers. Eddie.

Spoke to Haydon at Albins. They have no stock at present. He said none will be produced unless he got a bulk order from Weddles. He said the demand is just not there. Hmmm. Not looking good. Anyone heard of using the 2WD gear set for 4th gear?

Peter from Port

Hi Peter,

Although I haven't actually done it, the 5th gear ratio for the 2WD T3 is either 0.78 or 0.816.  The standard Syncro 4th is 0.85.  If you use the 0.816 you will have a slightly taller gear for cruising (4%) and a bigger gap from third to 4th.  I don't think the gap would be too big though since the Syncro 3rd gear is 1.225 whereas most other VW 3rd gears are 1.26.  Ron put a 0.85 4th in my T2 up from the standard .883 (3.8%) and the bigger gap is hardly noticeable.  Actually 1.26 3rd and .85 4th was a standard combination in some kombi boxes.  1.26 /0.85 = 1.48.
If you put a .816 4th in a Syncro the gap will be 1.225 /0.816 = 1.50, very similar.  The only inconvenience will be going up a long hill on the highway where you will have to hold on to 4th slightly longer before you change down, but you will cut your cruising revs in top.  I think this would be a good modification, increases gear ratio spread with very little trade off.
I would like to put a 0.816 4th in my T2 but because my 3rd gear is 1.26, (1.26 /0.816 = 1.54)
I think the gap to 3rd would be a bit too big and I haven't been able to find a Syncro 1.225 3rd gear.
I think my 0.85 4th gear came from a 1600 kombi box, not sure if they will fit a Syncro but Ron will know.  May open up your options.  Also, Albins may have other ratios available such as 0.82.

Neil.

Greg, as long as you don’t use all w/d on a hard surface it would be ok I suppose. Of course

Hi Hart/Pete, The use of AWD and/or a decoupler will have no bearing on the use of a higher ratio top gear. Syncro boxes were only available with two 4th gears .85 and .78. As far as I know you can substitute the .82 used on 2wd. I would ask Weddle to be sure. This is the way I would go. If you haven't got massive rubber on it will only mean that you will be working the engine a little harder before selecting fourth and having to gear down slightly earlier on steep inclines. The step to .78 is a bigger decision and should only be considered knowing the size of tyres you are running and any engine upgrade you might consider. Did you ask Albins about other ratios they might have in stock? Weddle are showing NEW .82 in stock.https://weddleindustries.com/products/1000157/1001711
Have you tried Gowesty, they state they are fitting a new fourth to every box they build?

Nicholas,

The only Australian business making gears is Albins.  The last time I was speaking to them, (5/6 years ago), they were sending a container load of gears to the US each week.  Their output is aimed primarily at the desert racing market and that is absolutely huge.   They have an extremely high good reputation in the desert racing world.   (Albins is not a mass production company as such.  They can make any gear to order.)

My discussions with the sales manager (still can’t remember his name!) had a very useful end result when, of his own accord, he decided that it was a bit silly for Australian Syncro owners, particularly Syncro_T3_Australia members, to have to buy through the US (Weddells) and that henceforth they could buy direct from Albins.

Whilst there are other gear manufacturers around the world, we have one of the world’s best right here and support at the end of the phone.

After much searching no .85 or .82 gears available that we could find. Although .82 listed on Weddle’s site, they are actually out of stock with none on the horizon. But Weddle’s had already noted this problem and they make a conversion kit to use a .883 4th gear from a Type 2 gearbox. See link below. So Ron convinced me that this was the way to go. He has used this kit a number of times. It comes with an excellent technical sheet. You can get a PDF of it from the Weddle site if interested. I visited Ron yesterday and he ran the 094 ratios through his computer program with my tyre specs while I was there. At 3000 rpm the stock .854 Syncro 4th gear with our final drive of 5.428 gives a speed of 107 KPH. Putting in the ratio of .883 for 4th gear reduces the speed to 104 KPH.

So my box is currently being reassembled and I will pick it up on Monday hopefully. Will post my thoughts on the final solution once I am back on the road. Will be interesting to see what the difference is with the slightly higher revs. Peter from Port

Greg, as long as you don’t use all w/d on a hard surface it would be ok I suppose. Of course
a decoupler is a prerequisite. What do YOU think ??

Spoke to Haydon at Albins. They have no stock at present. He said none will be produced unless he got a bulk order from Weddles. He said the demand is just not there. Hmmm. Not looking good. Anyone heard of using the 2WD gear set for 4th gear?

 Hello,

Sorry to say my 2wd T3 camper might have had its last run. Had trouble in the heat yesterday with some over heating. Does anyone know a good repair place in Broken Hill that knows a VW T3 MV engine?

I might have to truck it to Sydney or Adelaide and try and get fixed? does anyone know of excellent repair place in both locations?

Does any one have a spare engine that is going strong? please let me know.

Might have to look at a Subaru conversion.

Would love to see what people think is wrong and maybe I could fix myself? Warning light came on after temp was up and down. Pulled over straight away and oil had sprayed all over the Tail gate, coolant was boiling and some oil leaking out of right hand side. stared to lose power before this all happened. Starts but rough. Can I fix myself?

Thanks,

Leighton
