To begin to diagnose what’s wrong, you have to start by cleaning the engine so that you can see what is leaking from where. If the cooling system hoses are original, any one of them could have sprung a leak. Some years ago, Ken Garratt spent a lot of time listing the hoses and viable replacements and posted the results to our Files.
Oil leaks are a different matter and you have to start by determining the source. None of this is easy on the roadside!! Trucking is very expensive and it will pay to explore the roadside options first.
However, between us we might be able to get you under way.

I will see what I can do and will be in touch. I will be able to look at T3 Monday afternoon late due to work commitment. It was making a funny noise when I tried to restart after cooling down.

I think my fan was still running. Just need to see if I can fix and will try everything you suggested. Can not look until Monday afternoon. I should have taken some photo's. Just worried I might need new engine. only investigation will sort that out and will be in touch.

Hey Leiighton, sorry to hear you have troubles away from home not good but a trip you will not forget.Check the oil level and add to full will give you an idea how much was thrown out.Think I would pull the leads to find the miss then change the plug if there I one or two as they don't like running hot. Then provided no bad noises would look for oil leak after a quick rinse but maybe it just leaked because the heat and miss but all over the back of the car suggests it wont be hard to find.Maybe you could hotwire the fan switch to get home its just behind the lower grill RHS but check the fuse box for the fan fuse think its no 1 the one closest to the door but my memory is not that reliable could be wrong. It has 2 speeds therefore 3 wiresIts listed in the operators manual.Hopefully just a blown fan fuse if your lucky???Good Luck PeterOn Sun, Mar 1, 2015 at 1:25 PM, Leighton Smith smith_leighton@hotmail.com [Syncro_T3_Australia] <Syncro_T3_Australia@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

Leighton,
I would suggesting to pull the rocker cover off the RHS head to see if the valves are OK and if any cracking evident.
I had a nasty noise in my T3 Caravelle 2wd engine and it turned out to be the push rod had come out of the rocker seat and got jammed beside it. Strange things can happen and those gaskets are cheap.
Pulling and looking at the spark plugs will also be a good indicator.
By the way, my engine wouldn't idle when cold and only after adjusting the valves as per the Haynes book would it then idle. Idled perfectly too for a cold start first kick.
Even though they are supposed to be self adjusting - they are old engines now and really benefit from a valve adjustment.
Best of luck.
Cheers,
Skot

Yes LeightonI thought you might be able to hot wire the fan on high speed to get home. I did it once just ran the wire into the drivers area so I disconnected it on the down hill runs to give the fan a rest, worked no problems. The switch had failed in my instance. But the engine noise is a bit of a worryCheers Peter

As suggested, starting with checking plugs/oil/coolant/valves condition is a great place to start to get an idea what happened and what is now failing.
Did the oil light come on? MV's can be prone to cam bearing wear, and running at elevated temps can speed the wear. You will pick this up if the oil pressure light comes on.
A short term band aid fix can be running a sports oil (high viscosity eg 40W75),
Another thing to look for if the engine was spewing oil out, is look at the air cleaner where the breather attaches. Oil in there could have affected the air flow meter operation.
Another good check if you can get hold of a vacuum gauge is check inlet vacuum, if this is fluctuation it can indicate potential problems.
Probably unrelated for you, but I have seen on my bus a couple of times on very hot days when the fuel tank is low the fuel in the tank can heat up (return fuel from EFI) causing some hesitation and lack of power. Once the fuel cools (eg fill tank or just let cool) the issue goes away.
Hope you can find the issue quick and continue on your way!
Richard
I managed to get a look at my T3 Camper yesterday. Water is full, oil if full and managed to get it going but running rough? Engine was jumping around until I got it to idle with my foot on the peddle then run around the back and used the throttle.
I will take plugs out when I can get some tools and other tests. I think the timing could be out and has moved or the lifter are not opening at correct time? would this cause it over heat and run rough? I took a video and will send when I get it uploaded.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Leighton

with it running, aim your trusty infrared temp gun at each exhaust pipe.
if you find one much cooler than the other ones....that's the bad cyclinder..if it indeed is just one cylinder not functioning right.
then you know where to start.
I have seen hundreds of spark plugs not screwed in tightly enough in decades of working on cars.
I also have rarely, rarely seen proper anti-seize compound applied to spark plug threads.
always check the basics first.
popping a valve cover is a great idea....very little effort with good probability of revealing something.
one should always have a Remote Starter Switch onboard so you can hook it up, lay under there, crank the engine without it firing off ..and watch rocker arm and push rod function.
on a syncro ..one could/should always rig a 'starter trigger wire' in the engine compartment for use at times like this.
cheers
Remove all leads to plugs then refit just on a little <first click> then start while its running and remove individual leads from plug listening for which plug has failed quite obvious as the ok cylinders will effect the idle severely and the lazy plugs there will be no change to idle speed.Just had a plug drop out on mine and this method found it straight up first one I tested.Cheers Peter

Thanks for all the great advice and support. I hope it is an easy fix. Much better feeling after seeing it yesterday.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Leighton

Just got my car towed so I can fix it and you would not believe it the NRMA tow guy has completely stuffed my factory paint. Does anyone have a spare sliding door and other panels ? Not happy . Yes the complete side is damaged.

Cant you get the damage repaired and charge it to NRMA?
