4th (5th) Gear

Hello,

I tried adjusting the lifter and had great success. She is able to Idle  now, still a little rough and may have another go adjusting  Sunday.  Skot helped me through the process with a few phone calls thanks.

Has anyone got adjusting the lifters down to a fine art? as it feels like I am just a little out and it is making it run rough. The temp was steady, but dropping oil and will need to get new gasket. Any one now of a good place to get correct one? I am looking for it to be posted to Menindee (Broken Hill)

Can I do the timing without a timing light? just have limited tools.

Leighton

Leighton,

Buy some degreaser & engine block sealant or even silicone will probably do, pop the rocker covers off clean gaskets with degreaser & dry them and apply sealant to both sides of the gasket and reinstall them.

Then you are good to go for a while till you get some good ones.

Well done with the valves by the way.

Cheers,

Skot

Great news you are making progress. Try and get a gasket sealer (something that doesn't set like Loctite master gasket). Silicon will be a pain to remove later plus takes time to set. Not sure how it fairs in oil either.

I'm not sure if there are seals in the valve lifters? I wonder if heat could affect them?

The old debate continues!

Old plugs that had zinc plating tend to bind over time in aluminium. Most new plugs now have Nickel plating that prevents this.

Another good tip id don't remove/install plugs when the engine is hot!

Richard

If you can find a even incline hill you can get someone to drive with a constant speed & throttle in a gear under load with a loose but firm tension on the distributer clamp that you can just move. Sort of like a dyno that you don't have to tie down on. Get the driver to call out the speed variation as you slightly advance or retard, have used this method with my old bay and it worked but it was a long even hill and flat out throttle in third. Only do this for a kombi as you are still in the vehicle with just the engine lid open. Bit hard in front engine cars etc.
Bush mechanics Dyno not for the purists
