accelerator cable stopper

Hi everyone I replaced my accelerator cable on the weekend and broke the stopper at the peddle end of the cable.  I have tried all the parts places locally and Tooleys and no one has one, someone told me all VW use the same fitting and that they think the carby on older VWs use the fitting.  Has any one had any experience with this? Thanks Greg N

Hi Greg,
See attached pdf file.

What accelerator cable related part are you referring to?

6 and 7 Ken.  It looks like the cable fits into 6 and 7 does up and locks it in.  Greg
Hi Greg,
I don't recall any previous forum post concerning a need to find these parts. Meaning they should be readily available and retrievable, just need to locate a T3 being dismantled. Perhaps an enquiry through the Kombi Club forum might find a member who has a T3 being dismantled.
Cheers.

I can't say that set up looks familiar with older VW's, but no doubt it would be common with other models.

I notice on that page, item 4, the cover does anyone have this? I don't have it on mine, and also cannot see holes where the screws would have been, or anything the cable would have sat in to go through the cover. I wonder if this is for LHD vehicles?

Richard

Hi,

The parts are unique to the T3 - see attached, however the aircooled heaterbox cable attachments had a similar fitting which you may be able to adapt.

I guess it is more exposed on a LHD. Access to mount something on ours is not easy either. The connecting rod goes through a hole in the floor with no boot (on mine), so a worry in creek crossings when you have carpet inside!

No idea if that one could be adapted on.

Richard

Greg, These are t3 specific parts according to the part number. I would just go to a dealership and order them. If I was stuck in the bush I would try a steel nutsert with a hole drilled in it and the bolt going in from the back. Greg E

that plastic cover is attached to the body of the van with 4 pretty small sheet metal screws.

I haven't look under the front of a right hand syncro to be able to say if they are supposed to have one or not.

and ..
Of all types of left hand drive Vanagons we call them .....that I have seen ..they always have this cover to keep mud n' crude out of the forward end of the throttle cable and gas pedal bell crank mechanism.

Gday Scott,
Great to see you on this Oz forum still, many of us appreciate your continuing participation and timely advice over many years ... and all the way from the US of A too!

Yeah I had cause to replace my accelerator cable over 3 years ago, typically the wire cable rusts away and finally breaks near the forward end, just inside the front end of the metal tube that it runs in but given there is no protection from the elements, water, crud that enter the open ended tube, no wonder it eventually fails. As they say, things are only as good as its weakest link and clearly for the cable .... this is it.

In an attempt to remedy this exposure of the wire cable to the elements, I cobbled together a few bits and pieces and extended cable protection from where the metal tube finishes, up to the maximum distance I could achieve at the forward end close to the pedal end.

Pictures paint a thousand words so please see the attachments showing the parts used to remedy the problem. For lubrication internally, I used rubber grease. The rubber boot I took from a spare new accelerator cable that was the wrong model for our RHD so it came in handy for this project.

Where the accelerator pedal link rod passes through the floor panel large hole, I just fashioned a rubber seal on the top side and glued it in place, at best it reduced the size of the hole that lets rats through down to about cockroach size. Then I added to the link rod on the underside of the floor panel a soft but strong piece of plastic/rubbery material that permanently seals when the accelerator is at rest but obviously opens up when the accelerator is pressed .... best I could think of at the time, given I had no fancy plastic cover like the folk in USA seem to have in place on their T3 vanagons.

Hope this is of interest to someone, likely someone will come up with an even better solution to the poorly executed design by VAG for its RHD T3s in Oz.

Cheers.
Ken

My guess is it was too hard to fit to rhd models because of the body members.

Thanks for all your help with this everyone.
Luckily I have found a retired fitter who is willing to
turn me one up as a favour.  I am away so haven't seen the finish product but he called it
turning 101, so I am very confident.  Thanks again Greg N
Well the new accelerator cable stop bolt has been made and fitted.  The problem now is the new cable imported from Van Cafe for RHD is 20mm too short.  I have looked at re routing it to gain the 20mm but not possible.  Has anyone had the same problem? Or have I missed something obvious here. Thanks Greg N

Hi Greg. I, too, have ordered an accelerator cable from Van Cafe, to carry as a spare. Somehow I'm going to have to make sure I've got the correct part before I need it. I ordered part number 252.721.555R (for manual right hand drive).

I hope you can sort out your problem.

Gerald

Yes Gerald, the numbers are the same as yours. Greg

I doubt if Van Cafe would sell RHD cables. Try buying it in Australia.
Greg. About 5 years ago i broke a cable between charleville and longreach outback qld. Was passing a 3 dog roadtrain when it let go. Very scary. Anyway contacted this forum for help from side of road. Advice poured in which was great. Ordered a cable from tooleys to be collected in charleville. Whilst waiting went into a bike shop and bought 6 m inner cable and a few cable clamps. Left the old cable in place and withdrew the inner. Fed the bike cable through and bingo back on road. When the cable arrived from tooleys it had the wrong fittings. Tooleys insisted it was correct. It wasn't. Ordered cable from justkampers sydney. It was short a few inches like yours. Justkampers insisted it was correct. It wasn't. At this point i measured the old cable and ordered a cable from just kampers that size. From memory i still needed to swap an end fitting to get it to work. We discussed this on the forum at the time. I think those archives are now lost? Anyway it appeared the vw part no for the syncro were wrong. The solution is measure your old cable, ring a supplier( tooleys, justkampers) get them to measure cables they have whilst on phone and describe the end fittings. Sorry about long winded reply but this panned out for a year ( whilst i drove around using bicycle cable inner). The bike cable and clamps are still under the seat for spare. Pretty sure there is a mix with cable part no's. Bill
