ACT Syncro?

Hello,

Just seeing if anyone knows this Volkswagen T3 Synchro 4X4 campervan, 1989. It has a Subaru ER27 flat 6 engine. Genuine 172,000kms, 4 speed manual, petrol and LPG. Full camper, pop-top, stereo, ipod connection, aircon, aluminium bull bar, driving lights, fibreglass rooftop luggage bay, Taco gauges, oil and temperature gauges, VDO, towbar, new tyres, good condition. Minor marks on paintwork. They are asking $25,500?

Leighton
Syncro should not have a h. Sorry I cut and pasted it from the add.

Engine from a Subaru Vortex – this puts it well into unknown territory.  The engine is a good design but you would need to know a LOT about the conversion before you contemplated buying it.  Ok for a skilled mechanic but not for the average buyer.

Leighton,

I cant see any link.

By the way, my syncro has the same suby donk and it goes like a rocket and pulls like a 14 year old boy - problem is they like the fuel and they are very hard to get parts for. They were only made between 1988 and 1992 and hence are about the same age as most syncros meaning they are getting old too and starting to develop issues like a standard motor would.

The gas will save on fuel costs but reduce performance I would suggest.

Worth a look if its in the ACT - nice dry climate.

Cheers,

A 4 speed syncro? Without a G gear, forget it.

Hello Scott,

Just seeing if you can put another Subaru engine onto the adaptor plate if that engine is getting old and hard to get parts?

Leighton,

Thats what I am organising at the moment.

I just need to source a couple of parts and I am planning on getting underway early next year.

My engine still seems really good but I have recently done timing belts, oil and water pumps and once i put a new radiator and stainless coolant pipes in - it runs really cool too. My old radiator was shot as were the plastic coolant pipes.

All good now though.

Cheers,

The adaptor would probably fit but nothing else will. You will need a new wiring harness, coolant pipes, etc. The 3.3 SVX engine will be easier to use as replacement rather than the 3.0 as conversion parts are more readily available. The downside is are getting just as old as the 2.7. Besides that, the extra torque will likely turn your delicate Syncro gearbox into a meat grinder.

If you're repowering, it might be a good time to switch to an RJS bellhousing instead of the adaptor plate.

regarding that Subaru 2.7 Six.

it's an older series of Subaru engine.
it's related to the 1.8 OHC Four found in what we call a Layale Subaru car.
it's a 6 cylinder version of the 1.8 four.

I had one for a while...then sold it before putting it in a Syncro or T3 van.
some odd things about ..
there are two timing belts, one for each bank..and they are staggered ..so there are two crankshaft t-belt sprockets, one for the left bank, one for the right bank.
Subaru totally did away with that for their next engine series..
the EJ series ...just one nice long timing belt . ( you can see a lot of this on Wikipedia ..though more words than pictures. )

the 2.7 uses a distributor ....which EJ engines, starting in 1990 don't have of course.
The EJ's also have Knock Sensor Ignition ..always a good thing to have.

additionally I have read that the 2.7 can have  main bearing issues.

if you want a six in a Subaru in a T3 van ..
it used to be SVX ...
3.3 liters .  Nice engine. Fits well. Goes real good. Uses fuel nicely ..in US terms about 16 mpg.

the more modern engine, in a Six is the EZ series ..
in 3.0 and 3.6 liters I think..
Wikipedia for that.
Very compact engine.
I work on a Syncro with an EZ30 in it now and then ..
goes very nicely. The owner says he gets 14mpg though ...
that's a lot of fuel to burn per miles n' smiles.

btw..
what is the price of your gasoline in US dollars and gallons if that's easy to figure out. ?
We are below $ 4 per gallon..
nicely below .....I'm paying around $ 3.79 US for a US gallon these days.
I'm in Oregon ..
other parts of the US are paying 20 cents less per gallon,.

I will be going for the 2.5L suby 4 cyl - not interested in a six as they pose too many issues including transmission breakage issues.

Scott. The us gallon is 3.785 litres. We pay about $1.50 per litre. This equates to $5.68 per us gallon. The us dollar is around parity with $A so $5.68/gallon. Bill
Bill,

That really hurts. Parity with the Aussie Dollar. Oh for the love of Dog! When will it end. I paid $4.69 for low grade petrol near downtown San Francisco over the recent turkey holiday. Three miles in the suburbs and it was $3.53 a US gallon.

Unfortunately, that means Syncro parts have gone up as well simply by the function of currency exchange. Even parts in inventory are raised in price by vendors because they reason that their replacement cost has gone up.

thanks for the response on your gasoline price.
That is rather obscene I'd have to say ..near 6 bucks per US gallon.

I seldom go down that way anymore but I was in Big Sur, California  over our Labor Day Holiday weekend .
when fuel in normal places was around $ 3.80 per US gallon.

I needed some gas just to get back to the non-tourist areas , so bought 25 dollars worth in Big Sur.
the price was $ 5.60 per gallon I think.  I got 4 something gallons for my 25 bucks. That kinda hurt.

But you guys have that all the time.
Here's visulizing more reasonable fuel prices for you !

Afternoon all

Let’s see how this goes.

It is well known that increasing the power input to the syncro gearbox can cause problems, I was talking to Steve Muller the other day and as I understand he said that one of the problems with the gear box is that it runs hot under normal operations and he is advocating fitting a oil cooler to the gear box to overcome this, he reckons  that the temperature causes the drive shaft to the crown wheel and pinion to expand affecting the clearance lapping between the teeth and stresses the oil to its limits due to the temperature generated, when vw designed the vehicle one wonders what were the design parameters that they used as regards to the average temperature that the vehicle would operate under.

bob

Bob, to add to this VW in 1992 used a different material composition in the main gear housing to help solve the problem ...porsche did the same, the later housing weighed about  3 times more. I based this theory on experience over many years .....after a long drive  crawl under the syncro and touch the gearbox ...or should I say try and touch.....its friggin boiling hot

I use a simple rule of thumb...keep your syncro std = higher resale value and more customers to buy......more modifications = less resale and limited resale consumers

Hello Scott,

Just seeing if you can put another Subaru engine onto the adaptor plate if that engine is getting old and hard to get parts?

Cheers,

Skot

Full camper, pop-top, stereo, ipod connection, aircon, aluminium bull bar, driving lights, fibreglass rooftop luggage bay, Taco gauges, oil and temperature gauges, VDO, towbar, new tyres, good condition. Minor marks on paintwork. They are asking $25,500?

Scott,

Australia is a captive market for just a couple of suppliers.  They charge what they like and there is nothing on earth that can stop them.   To justify their rip-off prices, they offer excuses that wouldn’t convince kids in play school!

I totally agree with this statement I am about to place a order for a decoupler the prices ranged from$2000-00 from an aus source to $890-00 delivered from the states with transit insurance, the difference in price from the states between two supplies is in the delivery charges      bob
