ACT Syncro?

not really a subject for this list,
and, I say .... ......gasoline prices are 'artificial' ..
they are not determined by normal supply-and-demand factors.
( if that was the case, gas would be cheaper in California, for example, as the consumption in that market is huge, yet Ca. has some of the highest gas prices around. )

and taxes on the fuel of course..
my wild guestimate is that tax accounts for about as much as 60 % of what you pay for that juice.

One might also draw a correlation between major elections and price of gas prior.

and yes, the perception is that no one can do anything about it.
The 'occupy' movement has not reached Australia ?

and the bloke who mentioned LPG as a fuel ..
what is the availability of that fuel ?
and how convenient/inconvenient is it to refuel ?

a 'splash n' dash' at any ole petrol station is convenient for sure.  24/7 even.

syncro's rock !

Scott,

Australia is a captive market for just a couple of suppliers.  They charge what they like and there is nothing on earth that can stop them.   To justify their rip-off prices, they offer excuses that wouldn’t convince kids in play school!

I don't post much these days but I feel compelled to do so today LOL.

"A std Syncro is easier to sell and worth more than one with an engine conversion".

Probably true.

But.......

It's not as much fun! :-)))

For those who are, or are considering the "dark side" I thoroughly recommend the RJES bellhousing.

I have (injected) LPG on my EJ25 which is readily available in Au and is probably quicker to fill than your average Syncro with "slow fill syndrome"

Thanks everyone for your input re the ACT 2.7 Subaru Syncro. Looks like I will continue to try and find a standard syncro camper. Has any one spoken with the guy on carsales trying to sell the Blue Syncro Camper in VIC?

I use a simple rule of thumb...keep your syncro std = higher resale value and more customers to buy......more modifications = less resale and limited resale consumers

So what engine are you looking at putting in next year? Can that adaptor plate take the 3.3 or H6 engine 3.0?

Leighton,

Thats what I am organising at the moment.

I just need to source a couple of parts and I am planning on getting underway early next year.

My engine still seems really good but I have recently done timing belts, oil and water pumps and once i put a new radiator and stainless coolant pipes in - it runs really cool too. My old radiator was shot as were the plastic coolant pipes.

All good now though.

Cheers,

Scott

Just seeing if you can put another Subaru engine onto the adaptor plate if that engine is getting old and hard to get parts?

Leighton,

I cant see any link.

By the way, my syncro has the same suby donk and it goes like a rocket and pulls like a 14 year old boy - problem is they like the fuel and they are very hard to get parts for. They were only made between 1988 and 1992 and hence are about the same age as most syncros meaning they are getting old too and starting to develop issues like a standard motor would.

The gas will save on fuel costs but reduce performance I would suggest.

Worth a look if its in the ACT - nice dry climate.

Cheers,

Well said Andy,I totally agree.

Standard Syncro=stuck in left lane, arrive at destination stressed and tired.

Good to hear your still having fun with your conversion after all these years.
I too have an RJES bellhousing,I think you might be familiar with it.I bought it from Yurik. It has the same modification that you have done on your bellhousing.

Ej25 coversion,is the best thing that I have done with my syncro. And, with all my cars, for that matter.

I drive the bus everyday, and it is a pleasure.Zippy,in traffic(thats right, zippy),pulls away in top, cruises at 110k,and is better on the beach, where I do most of my off-road.Climbs inclines with ease.

You would find more mechanics familar and comfortable working with Ej engines than VWs.
I do agree that if you do have a converted vehicle, you are probably better to do the work yourself.I have a scanner, never had a fault code.
An increase of 80% in horsepower,by putting in a standard, modern engine.

Yeah yeah gear box troubles, your going to have them whether you have a standard WBX or a bigger engine.
Buy a T25,one day you will rebuild a transaxle.Maybe two.

Dont get me wrong,I love VWs,there in my blood, but VW should of had an engine of similar design to the Ej,rather then a watercooled Type 1 engine,to put in the 'new' Kombi.

Definatly not for all,but for those who have, you already know.

PS Does anyone know Geoff Paradise??

Here Here Ben,

I have driven my old mans syncro as just a bare shell without power steering (which has since been fitted) or air cond with low kms and it went OK but I would rather mine with its performance any day.

I have never had a VW donk in mine but I have had mine for over 15 years now and the only problems ever caused by my engine in that time was a failed optical sensor. It also developed a tappet noise which was fixed with a new oil pump and I replaced the water pump the same time as the timing belts just to be sure (not because of failure).

I would call that very reliable 1 failure in 15 years is pretty good.

Go the suby donks - they are fantastic.

I think the difference between a good and a bad conversion, whether it is Subaru, another VW or whatever,is money.
To do a good conversion, the engine should look like it has been there since factory.

I have seen some coversions on the Subivanagon forum that look like they are sponsered by Bunnings.

Take your time,do the research, get all the necessary bits and pieces, then go for it,or get someone who knows what they are doing to do it.

For me a bellhousing conversion is the only way to go.

Once upon a time,a fellow syncro head once told me the Subaru was a bad conversion,he has since seen my work and driven the vehicle,I believe he said something like this."geez, these Subarus really are a good conversion, arnt they".
Anyhow not for all.

GoWesty have the 2.1 to 2.5 engine kits too.
I believe someone on this forum is running one in at the moment.
