Does anyone here think BMW builds decent cars? For example the twin turbo six. How about the new BMW hybrids?
Well, the guy who designed those engines was head of North America Powertrain division and now project manager for the hybrid division. He's job is to find or invent the best gadgets and powertrains for the vehicles BMW builds for the world market. Where am I going with this?
He is a personal friend and fellow Syncro enthusiast. When he decided to fix the deficiencies in the T3 Syncro design, he installed an RJES bellhousing and replaced the aging Wasserboxer with a 3.3 SVX engine.
To each his own. I have owned both stock and modified Syncros. It your goal is to keep your Syncro as collectible as possible, then IMHO you shouldn't remove the WBX-4, WBX-6, inline-4, or inline-5 that your T3 originally came with. However, if your goal is to get the maximum enjoyment of the Syncro platform, you may consider repowering. I am not a big fan on cross-species swaps (such as Subie to VW) preferring to stay all VW as much as possible. My Syncro 16 had a 1.6TD from the factory and now sports a 1.9TD. Little changes bigger power. Conversion easily reversible. Once I drive my little turbo Subie powered Vanagon at over 100mph with power to spare, I had to think twice.
