Albins gear install

have been contemplating buying a taller 4th gear from albins. Anyone know who stocks their gear sets or do I call them direct. What price am I looking at for the gear and is it a big job to install one gear.cheers
Eric,I had gearbox issues this time last year.It was jumping out of 4th gear. After I pulled the box out,Wolfsberg in Sydney replaced 4th gear and associated parts.Jan could only get at the time, a gear that was slightly taller, with very minimal speed difference(but some was felt). It was still with me,pulling the box out,a costly exercise.12 hunge. But Highly recommened Wolksberg.Tell Jan,Ben Croft sent ya,'Easy job'.

You can buy direct from Albins.  Speak to Hayden Douglas (sales manager) and say that you are a member of the Syncro_T3_Australia group.

If you do speak to a rep at Albins re taller 4th gear could you please post your findings re costs and time involved to the group. It would be much appreciated I'm sure.

Ken,

I haven’t checked but I am mindful of warranty matters.  I would rather negotiate a warranty with a very long established Australian company with a good reputation than an unknown seller on eBay.  There comes the point where saving some money can have some hidden disadvantages.

Off topic, I hear on the news that here are fires along the Hawkesbury.  Do you know where?  I was living on Dangar Island when the fires hit in 91-92 and came within a whisker of wiping out Brooklyn .  Porto Ridge caught fire and Dangar was showered with hand-sized pieces of burning bark from Porto Ridge.  It was a very worrying time.

Les,

OK ... maybe someone here has recently bought an Albins R&P set and can mention here the price paid.

Hawkesbury is halfway between me and Sydney, usually that locality gives grief to motorists on the F3 and inter-urban commuter trains.

You must know something I don't about fires there. Can't imagine it's anywhere near as hot in this region as is predicted for SA today.

I know its lovely and cool in my garage, regardless of whats happening anywhere else around the globe ... haha

Cheers.

Ken

Eric, I just picked up my custom 3rd & 4th gears from albins last week the cost was about $350 per gear.I actually went with shorter gears becuase I have bigger tyres, so be careful with taller ratios with the stock engine.I dont think the wbx can really handle them.Cheers ,Eddie Bergodaz.

Hi all - Had taller Albins installed for some months ‘cause wanted to install the 1.9 TDI  I  have . The wbx didn’t handle them, max speed I got was close to 100 km/h not more. Rudi P. Re-installed the originals when he did my box again, after my first choice of workshop wrecked   it (for a lot of money). Although I have 16” installed I could always easily follow Mark on our way to DOVW.

I have given the Diesel a miss after taking me 14 yrs to built my little biplane and I don’t want to spend another 2 yrs in my w/shop smelling of diesel........hartmut

Hartmut, I saw your syncro at dotvw and I know my 16" tyres are a bit taller than your 16" tyres so averall gearing did become an issue to the point where a slight head wind would limit my top speed to just over 100k's.

I would mention that Andy Keith (Andy, haven’t heard from you recently) installed a 2.5 litre Subaru and the tallest Albins 3-4 set and found it over-geared.

Thanks Les. I'll give Albins a call then when i'm certain of which gears are best to install.

I have the smaller 2.2 subaru going in my syncro and have thought to use a 0.73 4th and tallest 1.08 3rd. Going by the tire size gearing ratio calculator a syncro with stock 27x8.5x14 tires and 5.43 r&p does around 3700rpm at 100kph. I am running 6.166 r&p with 30x9.5x15 tires and it is a little lower than stock doing 3800rpm at 100kph. With 0.73 albins 4th it would be around 3100 at 100kph.  The tallest 1.08 3rd would give 4700rpm at 100 for overtaking or steep hills. What do you think on this gearing and how many revs are other people with larger than stock tires sitting on at 100kph?

I have heard this a fair bit that the 2.5L Subaru isn't as powerful as many think it is. The Subaru motors seem to be low on torque - I was told this problem is created by the replacement flywheel which is much lighter than the Subaru one. The Subaru motors have excellent high rev power and rev freely but the low rev power and torque are lacking - especially in the 4 Cyl models.

I have noted the Small Car USA mob recommend the installation of a 3.3L quad cam 6cyl over the 2.5L for Westfalia Syncros due to the extra weight and larger wheels - they then opt for a taller 4th gear for fuel economy and because the 3.3L has 240hp as opposed to the original MV engine 95hp. I have been told the 2.2L is a complete waste of time as it is far too low in power. I have also seen a 2L WRX motor with the turbo removed and a supercharger installed which according to the Owner (who resides in Collaroy Plateau, Sydney) works very well.

Hence, the choosing of a tall 4th needs to be a careful choice and should take into account camping equipment loads etc.

Ken,
About a year ago this thread - http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=68167
was quoting $1000 for Albins R & P , which sounds a lot better than the starting price of $1650 0n Ebay, given that the Albins are supposed to be stronger. Should we do a group buy and put one in the shed for that awful day when we need it?

Scott,

Yes, load comes into it.  Andy was touring Australia (was part of the Cape trip) and was very heavily loaded.  I understand that the 2.2 (in good condition) is quite usable on standard wheels and tyres.  Once tyre size starts going up, the problems follow.

In the US, where anything less than a carcruncher wheel is considered just so yesterday, they find themselves on the never-ending merrygoround of trying to restore road speed.  They are fitting the 16” crownwheel and pinion sets, and that is after they have carved large chunks out of perfectly good bodies to house the oversized wheels and tyres

The 2.2 has better low-end torque than the 2.1wbx.  very happy with the low-end pull of the suby over the recond 2.1 wbx in the syncro. Here's a graph from subvanagon comparing torque output and horsepower between the different engines. Stock 2.1wbx has 77lb-ft at 1000 rpm and the 2.2 is around 120lb-ft at 1000. I don't know if this is with stock subaru flywheel mind you

I would mention that Andy Keith (Andy, haven’t heard from you recently) installed a 2.5 litre Subaru and the tallest Albins 3-4 set and found it over-geared.

Hartmut, I saw your syncro at dotvw and I know my 16" tyres are a bit taller than your 16" tyres so averall gearing did become an issue to the point where a slight head wind would limit my top speed to just over 100k's.

With all the lastest places, searching has never been easier. Look now! Looking to move this spring?
Bob and ALL,
Those posts were 2008 I believe, sounds encouraging but maybe someone here knows more current pricing.
I seem to recall it stated here some time ago that Albins require a minimum order of (from vague memory) say 10 R&P sets before they'll proceed to manufacture. Is that still true or has that issue been sorted with Albins through Les and this group?

Ken,
About a year ago this thread - http://forums. aussieveedubbers .com/viewtopic. php?tid=68167
was quoting $1000 for Albins R & P , which sounds a lot better than the starting price of $1650 0n Ebay, given that the Albins are supposed to be stronger. Should we do a group buy and put one in the shed for that awful day when we need it?

Head to the Daily Blob on Windows Live For more of what happens online
I have a taller 4th gear, and 16 inch wheels. My rolling diameter is 686mm.I have the wasser boxer still chuggen over.It is a dog to drive but is still definatley drivable.Off-road first and second gear are great.Growler gear is still good for low rev stuff.

I asked for pricing of r&p sets from albins before deciding to go for custom 3rd & 4th gears.Minimum run of 10 sets was a reqiurement and suggested price was $1600 for rear only.Although this is what Hayden at Albins told when I ordered my parts ,I got a diferent vibe from Steve, who is one of the partners at the company & who looked after me when I went to collect my goods. The feeling I got from him is that they were experiencing a slow down because of the US market & perhaps needed to do more small jobs to keep ticking along. The point I'm trying to make is that with a bit of coaxing or, firm orders from a few of the group members ,Albins might come to the party with good pricing and possibly relax the minimum order requirements-
