Hi Bob,

Forum members would well and truly be best served if a detailed list of all known Australia-wide, reputable & recommended service/rebuilders with excellent bona fides was available here in the records section. To qualify for that list, there would first need to be a sufficient number of satisfied customers reporting back here over time.

I am aware of past discussions here concerning suitability of Rudi and Racetrans over time. I'm unaware of the others you mention, particularly in any detail as to their reputations/bona fides and confirmed by members over time.

So as things stand now, there is only one qualified person on that list. Such a list has been asked for .... for about forever ... regrettably it's yet to come to fruition. We live in hope.

Cheers.

Ken

I agree Ken.

But as you say my list contains only 1 name after I have had 3 re-builds - that's Rudi - the only person who has done it right.

Not noisy and shifts perfectly.

I can finally hear the EJ2.5 engine but it is so quiet now with the Smallcar exhaust I cant hear it much either - but now I can hear the tyres - noisy buggers!

Cheers,

Skot

I guess one of the issues as they get older, the people who know them and work on them get fewer and the people using them and needing parts/repairs dwindles, so less people willing to work on them.

If you think the Syncro is bad, try getting a 411 gear box rebuilt, especially when mine was a one year only build and many parts are unique to that year!

Knowing who to use and where to go is important for us all though. I know at some stage I most likely need to do a GB. It runs perfectly currently, but one day it will wear out.

Richard

I have watched the vidio and the 1 thing i think he did was fit a stronger retaining plate to the bearing, as for powder coating the case i wonder if that would hider the dissipating of heat from the box ,also emailed them to see if they would detail the modifications interesting to see if they reply

One of the boxes in the video was very badly corroded, so the powder coating would help it survive. If your case is not badly corroding (as in not subjected to what that case was), no need to powder coat.

Other than the bearing support, there were a few others such as the oiling plate for the pinion, one of them had a diff lock fitted, all mating faces were machined for it to seal well, which in places changes assembly tolerances.

A lot of those mods would really depend on the box, eg if all the mating faces are good, no need to machine them and upset tolerances in the rest of the box.  Any good box re-builder would/should do this anyway.

Rudi recommends a stronger retaining plate and manufacturers them. I had one put in when he did my gearbox rebuild. Peter from Port

He put one of those in mine too.

Worth the extra $$$ to get it done right.

Has any member had a ratio change to there gear boxes in 4th and 3rd gear, if so what ratio did you select  and what motor was in the vehicle, what advantages or other did you find.

Bob,

I kept mine the same as original except for my 1st/ 2nd as it was damaged and had to be replaced. The only strong option available was the Weddle gears slightly taller version which is hardly noticeable and works well on and off-road.

Rudi gave me the option to upgrade my 3rd/ 4th gear as I am running a Suby 2.5L engine but I find these vans are very heavy (especially a syncro camper) and it would be better for me to get over steep hills in 4th than constantly be shifting down gears.

Hence mine stayed as per the original specs.

Cheers,

Skot

Bob , i had installed 3rd 1:18 and 4th 0.7 as i intended to swap the engine for 1.9 tdi. With those gears and the mv engine i was challenged to reach 100 kmh.
If you intend to re engine yours you would find the gears here.

Morning Hartut;
Long time no see,how are you going.
I have the oetlinger 2.5 ltr motor in the dual cab 90kw, the main reason i am toying around the ratio swap is to lower the rpms at 110 k/h around 3900 rpm at the  moment to low 3000, spoke to Steve Muller yesterday he said the motor can handle it, i will talk to Rudi today to get his advise regarding 3rd gear so i do not have a excessive gap between 3rd and 4th.
Was your conversion in the dual cab or another vehicle

Hartmut;
Quick footnote ; was your 4th gear .700. Steve recommended either .758 or .785. 3rd gear 1.125 or 1.174 , it looks like that you had the highest ratios fitted.

Hi Bob
Thinking last we met was down by the river, was a lovely meet...
I bought the sets for a match with a golf tdi which never happened.
Had them installed into my red doka took them out again 3 month later once i had decided
that the engine swap was far too costly. Also i am trying to leave the doka as original as poss.

Bob, yes it was. 7. I based my purchase at the time on calculations of a guy in canada who had the very same doka as i have. He send me all the graphs etc. Trouble is , you ask 10 people and get 10 different ratios. My 10c advice trust Rudi or Steve and go for it. Any di fference would be so small , too small really.

I have 1.88, 1.08, 0.73 2nd 3rd and 4th. Great for the open highway. Need to use 3rd more in hilly going.

PS: Any takers for my Trakka 'Gold Pack'

I've left ratios standard after the Subi 2.5 conversion, running 235/75/15 tires.
Wouldn't change it even though she sits on about 3800 rpm @110kmh.
Means you're not constantly changing gears going uphill, and that power is handy when fully loaded.
Economy still seems reasonable, better than stock.

My two bobs worth.
