Thanks for your efforts again in organsing the dedicated Syncro parking area. As I recall the topography, the area depicted by the orange rectangle is indeed on a slope, which should make for a great display.

I indicated back on August 11 that Max and I would be attending. This is has now changed, and in fact Deborah, Alexandra, Max and I will be attending, and very much looking forward to it; the event certainly, and the camaraderie definitely.

Please add our names to your list.

At last night’s Day of the Volkswagen organizing committee meeting, the T3 Syncro group was allocated a different and much better location for the Day of the Volkswagen.

The previous allocation was at the very far end of a very long and narrow parking area and I took this up with the head of the organizing committee. It transpires that it was the same area that was allocated for the 2010 event, which puzzled me even further until I learned that the 2010 allocation was based on the possibility that someone might camp on site over night. The 2010 arrangement was carried forward for 2011.

In the event, flooding just prior to the 2010 event threw all parking allocation into chaos and we had to make our own arrangements; it was Roger who found the spot that we eventually used.

Last night’s reallocation puts us in a very good place and at the opposite end of the whole area to where we were; on the attached map, we have the orange rectangle for the T3 Syncros.

Entry: enter at the second gate and follow the red arrow path until you are inside the racecourse grounds, then follow the blue arrow path all the way around to the top end of the display area.

Attendance: attendance is so far very thin and a lot less than previous years –

Anthony Balint + boys (Francesca studying)

Greg Esposito

Les Harris

Phill & Joanne Lander (bringing Roger’s second Syncro)

Roger Bell

Theo Weiss

Prompt indication of intention to attend would be much appreciated.

Glad to hear it all worked out so well Mark.

You just need to police who will be using it.

At least the whole family (those with 2 kids) can comfortably sleep in the syncro without the kids fighting with each other or waking each other up.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Mark, Is it supported by the legs on the seats as well as the door frame? Looks like a great solution for those like I who don't want holes in pillars for brackets. Greg E

Greg,

I made my own.   There were two transverse members made from 3 X 2 pine that sat on the door frame inside the glass and cut to fit the radius of the door.   There were two longitudinal members that created a rigid rectangle.   A canvas formed the bunk itself and the canvas was stapled to the transverse members.   The whole thing dismantled into an easily stowable pack.

Greg,

These are very strong and the legs are spring steel and provide ample tension and support for the two rails. The steering wheel also adds support.

I have arm rests too but the legs on mine do not contact them.

The material has a slight sag which helps keep the child in the bunk and has worked well for me along with a local friend with a T4 syncro who has his 30kg 6 year old sleeping in the same bunk.

See the attached photo of my daughters sleeping quarters. She slept like a log the whole trip.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks Scott I will check out the local Rays when the time comes. My little lass is still too little. We are lugging around a porta cot, that took a lot of effort to find, as it fits lengthwise between the bed and the left hand seat turret. A little cot like that will free up a lot of space and weight.

Greg,

Thats what we liked about it. The bag is very small and light to carry this stretcher around and it really would not be noticed in the usual family trip.

I could only ever find this stretcher @ Kangaroo Tent City and for $30 its a bargain.

I have been looking for a long while for one of these and I even bought a Westfalia T2 style stretcher cab bunk and then decided it would require far too much modification. That one was worth $100 so that makes the Diamantina stretcher bed even more value for money.

I am soooooo glad I am finished with the porta cot stage of life. Our one never really agreed with me and it used to weigh around 25kg and take up half the floor space in the syncro. Very annoying but necessary for the very young - although Mark had a great set up in the pop top with a side barrier. Maybe he could show a photo.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks for your efforts again in organsing the dedicated Syncro parking area. As I recall the topography, the area depicted by the orange rectangle is indeed on a slope, which should make for a great display.

I indicated back on August 11 that Max and I would be attending. This is has now changed, and in fact Deborah, Alexandra, Max and I will be attending, and very much looking forward to it; the event certainly, and the camaraderie definitely.

Greg - just a thought - maybe put it on the seats themselves.... Scott is right, it is OK without the armrests, and you and trim it to fit as Scott and I have done and see if you are happy, however, if not, maybe trim is slightly more, and it will fit between the doors and the legs will rest on the seats... A long time ago, I did a lot of travelling with my then wife and her two children in a T2 with a pop top.   It took only one trip to realize that the rear seat/bed arrangement was an utter disaster.   The children were not a problem; I had made a bunk similar to the arrangement in Mark’s pictures and they were very happy with their “glass bedroom” as they named it.

The huge problem was with the fold out bed.   Before we could bunk down for the night, every mortal piece of equipment and luggage had to be removed and rearranged so that the bed could be folded out, after which there was not one square inch of floor space that was not fully covered with stacked gear.   Whilst the children could have slept in the top bunk, there were limitations to that idea.   They were bedded down well before we wanted to go to sleep and some of that top space had to be used to store some of what had been downstairs.

Before we could even make a cup of coffee in the morning, the bed had to be turned back into a seat and every mortal piece had to be removed, rearranged and restacked.   We did that only once!!!!

The pop top had come with two pull-out bed-boards but their safe load was around 75kg, just enough for one adult.   When folded back, the bed-boards still ate up three feet of headroom, much restricting the stand-up space.

This is what prompted me to make up a set of folding slats to replace the ply boards.   The slats (in the T3) fold back to just 18” and full standing headroom is available for the entire length of the rear cabin.   The headroom was good but the key advantage of this arrangement was that absolutely nothing had to be moved and re-stacked; everything stayed in its allocated space for the entire trip.   I also enabled us, on several occasions, to travel late into the night.   Because of the practicality of the upstairs bunk, it was only a matter of minutes to have the bedding in place.   I would never revert to the original arrangement.

There are pictures of my set-up in the Files.

Les,

Available space in a T2 compares badly with that in a T3, so no real contest, even more so if only for one or maximum 2 onboard.

Do you sleep on a thin bed of nails on the mezzanine floor?

I'm having trouble thinking how my 1.8m length x 1.2m wide x 180mm thick mattress would stow on the mezzanine floor when the poptop is down. Please don't suggest a) I should buy a thin bed of nails so it fits up there and/or b) my wife she hasn't lived yet if she hasn't had the indubitable experience sleeping nearer my god to thee upstairs and not forgetting the likely wrath inflicted on yours truly should I unwisely suggest she can easily get up and down to/from the mezzanine floor each night, including a not uncommon pitstop halfway through the night in the pitch black.

Methinks she who must be obeyed may well disagree with your methodology and design function .... and more than just a tad!

Ken

Skot - your tip was good - i've attached a couple of pics....

For those interested - Skot recommended

the Camp Stretcher - $29 - chop down a little and there you have it!

Thanks Skot

Ken,

In the T2, I used two stiffer than normal pieces of foam sheet about 50mm thick; my (then) good lady made covers and they Velcroed together.   Storage was not a problem because they could be tossed on top of anything during the day.

In the T3, I use a pair of good quality self-inflating mattresses; they inflate to 80mm and they are very comfortable.   Each rolls up into a cylinder 200mm in diameter and 1M long.   Because they are soft and light, they are also easy to store.

Access to the upstairs bed is via the RH side counter top, which is not a problem for me but you might not be as fit or flexible as I am, notwithstanding that you are half my age.   Once up there, it is truly something wonderful to wake up in the morning to see kangaroos grazing within twenty feet.   One morning, I was treated to the sight of two emus circling the T2, peering in through each window as they went.

My Trakka conversion comes with a spare set of mounts at the front of that counter that will accept the rear fold-out table.   These mounts can be used for a dedicated access pedestal.

The T2 wasn’t a Trakka conversion but I had built and installed a similar setup.   Whilst the T2 is smaller inside, the amount of gear for two adults and two children for two weeks on the move would still eat up a lot of the space in a T3 and the problem remains of having to move everything at night before the bed can be pulled out and then re-stow everything in the morning.   The amount of gear for just two adults on the move for two weeks is still considerable.

Les,
Ok well I'm more than happy to defer to someone 128yo nimbling up and down each night via table mount to the mezzanine floor. I'd like to see that!! Then again ,,,, maybe not!!!!

The first trick with the syncro is to avoid bringing stuff that takes up floor space we think is a must have but isn't necessarily. This helps limit the day/night changeover process you speak of.
The second trick is to have the "kids" off your hands. Grey Nomads RULE!!
Travelling solo, I find the day/night changeover process not a problem. With my better half on board, any bloke would agree ... it gets trickier ... haha.
