Aaron,

If it is the one I am thinking of - it lives almost at the top of my neighbouring street. He also has a bay kombi camper he is selling - seems to be clearing out all things VW.

He will regret it.

I can wander up and take a look if you like (on foot as my syncro died while up @ Port - home now - thanks again Hart for loaning me and the princesses the Hippie Syncro for a couple of days - we really appreciate it - great to catch up too - shame it wasn't with my syncro).

Cheers,

Skot

Yes that one is up at Terrigal / Avoca overlooking the ocean and coupled with trades use has opened the opportunity for rust to take hold.

Skot,

if the distributor module you are referring to is the Hall sensor, they are reasonably common. I had mine die in the Kimberly back in 1999. I just got a Ford hall sensor, joined the wires and screwed or pop riveted (can’t exactly remember) the module back onto the distributor base plate. The modules are listed in the Jaycar online cattledog CAT. NO. ZD1900. The Hall automotive sensors were all the same shape as far as I remember except for the double back to back models which you don’t want.

If you need more help on this call me tomorrow in daylight on 0425 316 464 and I’ll go out to the van and have a look at the modification I did and talk you through the colours etc.

Good luck,

Tom

Thanks Tom.

My syncro is powered by a 6cyl ER27 donk which has a rather large external module and probably a hall sensor in the distributor as well.

They seem to work in tandem to switch the coil on /off apparently.

I am going to get a new coil, module and hall sensor to try and remove all possible further problems in this area. All items are about as old as the vehicle and have never been replaced (until now) - hence well overdue.

Everything else seems to be working fine????.

Hopefully I can get the bits I need tomorrow yet as it is a USA & Japan only motor - I may need to purchase some new bits from the states.

Cheers,

Skot

Scott

Sorry to hear that the long-awaited Crescent Head / Port Mac trip was cut-short. What a bugger. Many thanks to the generous Hartmut at 'Have-a-Hart - Adopt-a-Syncro Rentals, Inc.' - another wonderful example of Syncro cameraderie.

I might make it to Bateman's for the Saturday night to help at least with the numers for the photoshoot - hopefully you up and running by then.

Regards
Mark.

A distributor module shat itself. We were cruising along @ 100km/hr along Crescent Head Rd and the engine just shut down in a split second.
Problem is it was New Years Eve and nothing opens back up until tomorrow.
Thankfully NRMA premium came to the rescue with a tow all the way home and another free tow down to the mechanic tomorrow when they open.
This is the worst time of year to have anything fail - nothing is open to get parts from.
Should be sorted very soon hopefully.
Cheers,
Skot

Be care ful what you are replacing. The parts do not wear and you may be replacing good Japanese parts for rubbish. I have seen this many times before. Just change what you need to and keep the rest for spares.

Tom,

So far I have tried replacing the external 7 pin module for the Subaru ER27 (luckily these fit other vehicles so I got one from Repco), and I also replaced the coil.

None of these potential solutions have worked.

Thus its the turn of the distributor now - that job will be for my mechanic but I have printed out your reply and will give him this as an option.

I can buy an entire new distributor from the US for $167US but they wont ship outside the continental USA - buggers.

Its a shame these things fail as they aren't really a wearing part they just seem to get hot and die. At least I know mine has lasted since 1991 when the donk was installed in my syncro. That's 20 years this year! Not bad but still a pain in the arse.

Nothing worse that having a 2 tonne lump sitting on the grass in front of your house that wont move by itself.

Cheers,

Skot

Skot,

if the distributor module you are referring to is the Hall sensor, they are reasonably common.

Good luck,

Tom

A distributor module shat itself. We were cruising along @ 100km/hr along Crescent Head Rd and the engine just shut down in a split second.

Problem is it was New Years Eve and nothing opens back up until tomorrow.

Thankfully NRMA premium came to the rescue with a tow all the way home and another free tow down to the mechanic tomorrow when they open.

This is the worst time of year to have anything fail - nothing is open to get parts from.

Should be sorted very soon hopefully.

Cheers,

Skot

Its a shame these things fail as they aren't really a wearing part they just seem to get hot and die. At least I know mine has lasted since 1991 when the donk was installed in my syncro. That's 20 years this year! Not bad but still a pain in the arse.

Nothing worse that having a 2 tonne lump sitting on the grass in front of your house that wont move by itself.

Skot,

if the distributor module you are referring to is the Hall sensor, they are reasonably common.

Good luck,

Tom

A distributor module shat itself. We were cruising along @ 100km/hr along Crescent Head Rd and the engine just shut down in a split second.

Problem is it was New Years Eve and nothing opens back up until tomorrow.

Thankfully NRMA premium came to the rescue with a tow all the way home and another free tow down to the mechanic tomorrow when they open.

Should be sorted very soon hopefully.

Thanks Ben T.

I need to wait till Monday to see what we can do with my existing one - it is all electronic so it should all be fairly good in theory - unless the whole thing shorted itself.

I will let you all know as soon as I know the damage.

Cheers,
