DC or single cab T3 wtb syncro or 2wd

Skot,

We talk about the apple peeler later ---- when I do need some thing from the US and they won't send I would ask Florian Speier to receive it and send it on. Just a though to try and beat them.........Hartis

Tom,

So far I have tried replacing the external 7 pin module for the Subaru ER27 (luckily these fit other vehicles so I got one from Repco), and I also replaced the coil.

None of these potential solutions have worked.

Thus its the turn of the distributor now - that job will be for my mechanic but I have printed out your reply and will give him this as an option.

I can buy an entire new distributor from the US for $167US but they wont ship outside the continental USA - buggers.

Its a shame these things fail as they aren't really a wearing part they just seem to get hot and die. At least I know mine has lasted since 1991 when the donk was installed in my syncro. That's 20 years this year! Not bad but still a pain in the arse.

Nothing worse that having a 2 tonne lump sitting on the grass in front of your house that wont move by itself.

Cheers,

Skot

Scott,
I remember in the past we had electronic distributor failures on both Mazda 626s in our family, the genuine replacement prices were astronomical so I think the trend was to find 3rd party equivalents for much cheaper. But I also understood at the time that for those in the industry with the knowledge, they knew what parts could be replaced to restore the failed unit. But knowing what parts fail in them and who has that knowledge and can do restore it is the tricky bit. In our case it was a Mazda specialist wrecking yard/mechanic in Sydney.

Typed next to my up and running syncro replete with new water pump and oil cooler project done and dusted.

Thanks Ben T.

I need to wait till Monday to see what we can do with my existing one - it is all electronic so it should all be fairly good in theory - unless the whole thing shorted itself.

I will let you all know as soon as I know the damage.

Cheers,

Skot,

If the extra shipping doesn't bother you, I can accept the shipping for you and forward. Let me know.

Hart,

Ben T has offered so I shall take up his offer as soon as I find out the culprit.

Bloody mechanics - they are never around when you need them - it should be an essential service like hospital staff.

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers,

Skot

Skot,

if the distributor module you are referring to is the Hall sensor, they are reasonably common. I had mine die in the Kimberly back in 1999. I just got a Ford hall sensor, joined the wires and screwed or pop riveted (can’t exactly remember) the module back onto the distributor base plate. The modules are listed in the Jaycar online cattledog CAT. NO. ZD1900. The Hall automotive sensors were all the same shape as far as I remember except for the double back to back models which you don’t want.

If you need more help on this call me tomorrow in daylight on 0425 316 464 and I’ll go out to the van and have a look at the modification I did and talk you through the colours etc.

Good luck,

Tom

A distributor module shat itself. We were cruising along @ 100km/hr along Crescent Head Rd and the engine just shut down in a split second.

Problem is it was New Years Eve and nothing opens back up until tomorrow.

Thankfully NRMA premium came to the rescue with a tow all the way home and another free tow down to the mechanic tomorrow when they open.

This is the worst time of year to have anything fail - nothing is open to get parts from.

Should be sorted very soon hopefully.

Cheers,

Skot

Hey Skot,

It never occurred to until now that I can probably source the part locally and dispense with the delay and cost of having the vendor you were considering ship the item to me first.

California is the epicenter of foreign car imports in the US and likely the best place to get parts for same.

I still remember the first time I saw a Subaru at my local VW dealer with the plates 'URABUS'. I didn't realize the dealer had started selling Subarus as well. The asked the couple driving the Subie what sort of VW bus they drove. To which they responded, "It's Subaru spelled backwards, son. We get asked all the time."

That was about 3 decades ago and much earlier than the time when people started putting Subie engines in Vanagon or any other VW's.

BenT

I will let you all know as soon as I know the damage.

Skot,

If the extra shipping doesn't bother you, I can accept the shipping for you and forward. Let me know.

Thanks Ben.

Should the need for a fully new distributor arise I will forward you some cash and you can send one down to Right hand drive land!.

Aaron,

I checked with my mechanic regarding potential DOKA t3 for sale and none were available that he knew of.

He actually said..."everyone that has one loves it and wont let go of it".

The yellow one that I was thinking of is owned by an architect and whilst it is just a 3rd vehicle he cant live without it either.

Sorry for the disappointment - but I let him know if anyone comes in wanting to off-load one to let me know.

Cheers,

Skot

And of interest, the seller mentioned to me he was "sure" he would regret selling it.

Well, he sold it, took the cheque, and watched it drive away.

Next day, the new 'owner' called and said he found some rust in the rear tray that had been obscured by some formply that was in the rear tray to in fact protect the slats under the tarp. He advised the purchaser to bring it straight back. He gave him his cheque back and noted that the family were _very_ glad to see the DOKA back home. He has since joined the forum here.

Skot's mechanic may well be right :-)

Mark.

This Sydney based syncro dual cab was for sale during November 2010.

A rare beauty. Had you been looking in November?

Aaron,

The automagic DOKA in the Hornsby area is still for sale around the $9K mark.

It is in great cond with a fully recod motor and lots of caravelle interior goodies courtesy of a wreck that Dave (the Owner purchased).

All looks great - but not manual.

Let me know if you want an inspection.

Cheers,

Scott
