I have encountered a problem.  Engine starts and runs normally until it warms up a bit but then goes to a high idle.  Moving off from traffic lights needs a careful footful to get it moving.

This afternoon, I went to the local shops and back (very short distance) but had the high idle when I stopped outside.  Now, with a cold engine, I cant get a start.

Any suggestions?

Les

Just as a starting point - vacuum leak, temp 2 sensor or afm. Les I have my engine in bits and am around on the w/end. If you can drive it over you are welcome to do the lazy diagnosis route of swapping bits. Sounds a bit like temp 2, have you put an ohm meter across it and refered to the chart? Greg E

Dear Les,

As no experience with the high idle, sorry, can't provide a reliable answer, but having read your last sentence reminds me of the

light blue temperature sender

which prevented my engine from cranking some time back. Sorry again, this source is in German only, just wanted to post it so you can hopefully more easily locate the sender in your rig. Careful, there are several senders out there and there is a syncro specific one, which can be seen here https://www.tk-carparts.de/article/1073/Temperaturgeber_NUR_Syncro_WBX.html for example

The sender should only be a couple of $ and may be worth a try.

Hope this helps. If not, I could research the issue in more detail a bit later today.

Thanks,

Joachim

Here goes, if you have a/c there is a switch that raises the idle rate when you stop ,I reckon that this is to keep the compressor at the correct revs to operate properly when stopped you can test the function by turning the a/c on and off when stopped , the other item that upsets the idling is the emc temperature sensor, hope this is off some help.   Regards      bob

Greg,

Yahoo is going gaga again, posted your message three times!

When this started to happen, the first thing that came to mind was the AFM and Philippe has nominated the AFM so I might start by taking it out and giving it a thorough clean.  I haven’t read up on it yet but will do tonight.

Robert,

A/C removed – it is the Prestige debacle! – so no high idle to accommodate the compressor load.

Les, I think he is saying temp 2 sensor, I also think it sounds like that.

Greg,

Thanks, I will measure that tomorrow.  I have to change the thermostat anyway because it is still the old (non genuine) that isn’t opening and closing smoothly.

Greg,

Bentley 24.45 has a chart of resistance for what I presume is the coolant temp sensor in the thermostat – being typically Teutonically opaque, that isn’t stated, of course.

Now that I have re-caffeinated my neurones, I will measure it.   With a bit of luck, that will be the culprit; it fits with the symptoms.

the temp sensor is not in the thermostat of course.
The resistance values int eh book are  useful ..
and ..the sensor is inexpensive enough to just try a new one ..
a high quality new one, not an el-cheapo from a  large Asian country.

I have seen them read and work fine cold, and be wonky hot.
They are inexpensive enough that if the worst that happens is you have a spare, that's not a bad thing.

I didn't see the symptoms.
I am very big on making sure throttle switch is making contact at idle.
i've seen dozens of those not working right.

Les, there you go with the engineering terms leaving us high school drop outs behind! As a certain red head would say "please explain". Yes thats the graph and my understanding is that first half is temp sensor one (in afm) and the second half is temp sensor two (thermo housing). So you could do the same check on the afm temp sensor between terminals 1 and 4. Also whilst your there if you wanted to go crazy you could go between terminals 2 and 3 with an analog ohm meter and check for a nice fluid gain in resistance as you move the afm flap. If you have trouble getting a temp 2 you can borrow mine whilst the engine is out. Greg E

Greg,

Want a good laugh?  Volkswagen have two in Australia – price $96!!!!

Just Kampers have to equivalent for $15 but they have all gone to Valla!

The graph is a split graph – I will get back to that later.

Les beware with just kampers, I had a look on there site and can only see 2wd ones. You need the screw in not the clip in bung type. The right one looks like this.

Brilliant!!!

Now, have you got a part number for it?

What I have got so far is 025 906 041 and I don’t know if that is 2WD or 4WD.
