DOVW

Hi all just wondering who will be going to Day of the VW Victoria on the 27th
November. I will be going & taking the 16" Doka, hope to see some Syncro's
there. Info on Volkswagen Club of Victoria website, or address of day is Yarra
Valley Racing club Melway Ref 275 B1. regards Mark
I thought that the entire group had gone into hibernation for the
winter!

I will be at the DotVW and it would be a great venue for a get-
together. I will try to get a dedicated area so that we can get all
of the Syncros together.

Mark & Les,

I'll be there as well.  Just been spending the afternoon cleaning and polishing the roof of the van.  It's a bugger of a job when it has to live outside, but I try to do it at least once a year for DotVW.

I need a favour from someone going to DOVW with a digital camera. Can someone take some photos of the vacuum tank for the diff locks which is under the car that shows the mounting location. Also the non return valve and the connection of the vacuum lines to the (MV) engine.

Thanks

Phill,

I can do that for you. I have a 6MP camera and can get the pics from
my own Syncro.

There is a case for a convoy.

This is the 60th anniversary of the Kombi and this year’s DOTVW is a celebration of this milestone.

It is a good excuse to get members from NSW and SA to come and we could have an impressive showing.

We need the earliest possible indication of who is coming so that we can get the space allocation we need.  This will be done by Brian Reed, who is also VP of the VW Club of Victoria .  Brian was responsible for getting the dedicated Syncro display area last year and it worked very well.

Hi Hart - sure - that would be great. Will the Tristar be back from it's resto? Can discuss further at Old Bar.

And if the Hartmut’s TriStar is ready, you can bring three.

Deb is quite capable of driving one.

(You can take Max in whichever one you drive.)

It would be magnificent to have a husband/wife team in attendance.

Hi Les and all,

It will be great to have a strong interstate contingent again. The locals had better start putting their hands up, or they’ll be outshone. There has been a big step up in (free) children’s entertainment this year, so families should be fully catered for.

I have confirmed the same parking area as last year for the Syncro’s. Entry arrangements to the ground have changed this year, and more of the ‘outside’ car park area will be used (it is now fenced off). This will allow for a cavalcade of Kombi’s (1 for each year, hopefully) to be assembled in the central area of the grounds. There will be a separate ‘drive through’ judging area for general entries this year, but we will be judging the Syncro’s separately in our designated parking area, as will several other special interest groups, so you don’t need to go through the ‘general’ judging queue, so long as you enter as a Syncro (rather than a ‘Kombi camper’ for instance). General judging is expected to be finished earlier (by 11am), and we will need to be aligned to that, so anyone wanting to be judged will need to be in the Syncro area well before then. Hopefully, the presentation ceremony will be earlier this year.

Pre-booking on-line should be open soon at www.vwclub.com.au .

I’ll see some of you at Old Bar, then I’ll be on a road trip for a couple of weeks, so Les, if the ‘overnight’ at the Tooradin Caravan Park is going ahead and I’m out of touch, please include me.

Brian and all intending attendees,

If we get contingents from the other states, the Tooradin caravan park would be perfect for Saturday night and could be very useful for those who intended to kick off early on Monday, but – this is a very popular caravan park and we would need plenty of warning to get sure bookings.

Les,
Mark me down for DOTVW.Blow the VWs it will be good to meet our interstate members. As previously mentioned I will be happy to help including the Tooradin Campsite arrangements. However am off to France/Spain/Uk tomorrow for a month so will be a little unaccessible until return 20 Oct. unless I get arrested for using 50year old school boy French. Might be best if we could get a preliminary booking in for Tooradin before this if numbers substantial.

Also am showing below the condensed word version I made of the US tailshaft vibration/difflock mechanism discussion  that previously caused difficulty in opening..I'm not a Mac user Phil. Hope to finally meet you and see your pristine Syncro  at 60thDOTVW.Will you be bringing the kangaroo in your photo?
Cheers
Roger

> "After converting my '86 Syncro sunroof to Subaru I finally got around to replacing the front diff. rubber mounts. I had already replaced all the motor and tranny mounts at the time of the conversion. My van was pretty smooth to start with, that is, when I compare what I was experienceing to some posts I've read. I had minor vibration between about 42 to 50 mph. Anything above or below those speeds was smooth.

I had read all the posts on "THE" fix and even had purchased and modified a Dewalt laser level to align the driveshaft when I would get to changing the front diff. mounts. In the mean time, I had read a post here about the Van Cafe fix. Simply leave the mounting bolts a little loose, drive the van, let it sort  itself out, then tighten the bolts.
Easy, simple and it WORKED!! My van is absolutely silky smooth at any speed!!

So, Thank You Van Cafe!!!

I would also like to thank my friend Dylan Friedman who helped me via telephone and email with my rear diff. lock. My diff lock was basically stuck disengaged. After a week with the van on jack stands I finally got it to function by "MANUALLY" pushing and pulling the the shaft while constantly spraying it with penetrating oil. At first I could get it to engage and disengage, but it would not light the indicator. At this point, Dylan helped with ensuring the correct configuration of the spacer washer and bracket configuration etc. I kept after it and finally I have a Syncro with a working diff. lock, and decoupler and is vibration free!! LIFE IS GOOD!
>
> Steve Rose

Congrats,

I recalled the earlier post but I wondered do you loosen all 8 front and rear bolts, and how loose.  And how fast are you driving, and how long before you notice the vibes go away?
Thanks

Since I was replacing all three rubber mounts up front, I left the three bolts loose for each mount and also the two crossmember bolts where the front mount sits in the middle. I drove the van about two miles out and then home. I drove up to about 50mph.
There was no vibration from the very start that I could tell.
I have a decoupler and ran it in 2wd.
If you are in awd w/no decoupler, I would be careful not to cause a situation for power to transfer to the front right before the end of your run directly before you are to retighten the bolts.
I'd think if power was transfered just before you stop, it could cause the front diff. to move a bit from the sweet spot.
I hope this makes sense to you.
BTW..the bolts for the mounts were tight enough to only begin to compress the rubber donuts of the mounts. the cross member bolts were tight enough not to rattle around.
Let us know this turns out for you should you try it.
Steve Rose"
