Engine runs rich

Hi All,
I have to change subject title as the engine stalling has been sorted.
However it stills runs very rich and a bit rough as previously stated
I have done most of the items suggested on this forum as per Bentley
and Pro Training
I wonder if it is a faulty ECU? What I really like to do, if I could
borrow a working ECU from a kind soul to eliminate my suspicion.
Greg is there a possibility that I can twist your arm -maybe?
To make matters worse, my email program is playing up so not sure if
it will go through.

Cheers,
Theo
Theo, The short answer is yes you can. I doubt it is your problem. Have you checked for continuity between the green o2 sensor wire and the pin at the ecu plug? Its odd that it runs rich on both the mtx and standard o2 sensor. If you have checked that wire and fitted a new blue temp sensor I think we should try adjusting the afm. Since both the wiper arm and spring have been previously adjusted there is a good chance they are in the wrong spot. The only issue is we fly out on Monday and have a busy weekend booked. If you can run it well enough on gas we can look at it when I get back in a couple of weeks. Greg

Hi All,

Not only my Van giving me grief, now also the PC is playing up. Our e-mail program went to sleep for good.

Unfortunately the engine still runs very rich. I replaced the temperature sensor and the throttle position switch.

One measurement worries me though. Terminals 12 &  14 on the ECU plug with all 4 injectors connected should be 3-5 ohms.

My reading is 16 - 17 ohms. One only connected at a time should be 15-20 ohms, my reading is 26.5 ohms.

Faulty wires? The individual injector all measure right, about 16 ohms.

Any thought?

Cheers,

Theo

Hey Theo, did you end up checking the green wire from the 02 sensor to the ecu as Greg suggested? I would try to disconnect this wire to see if it makes a difference. The 02 sensor has the "final say" in the mixtures , so if your AFR is set up right and the wire is connected to the ecu , it wouldn't matter what the injectors are doing because the 02 sensor will "trim" down the AFR to the preset value. Eddie.

Hi Theo,
Peter Kestel reported findings of broken wires in his wiring loom and what he did to remediate. It's in the files section.
Cheers.

Eddie yes I did, the wire is continuous.. Mind you, I have the O2 sensor disconnected anyway - drive in the limp-home mode.

The sensors are too much fauled up to work properly. The MTX is not working at the moment error code E2. I will check the cable and try to re-calibrate.

In the past driving with the O2 sensor connected/disconnected or with the mtx setup it did not make much difference to the Lambda #9-11.

I check the injectors, the spray pattern looks ok and the quantity is about 90-100 ml ea.in 30sec. The van does about 100km on half a tank!!!

So where is it all going and the exhaust is not smoking. Obviously I am missing something here. To my way of thinking, the injectors are staying open too long

but why - faulty ECU/cables? With the O2 sensor disconnected and in limp-home mode it would use a bit more fuel but surely not half a tank for 100km.

I'm looking forward catching up with Greg again and checking with his ECU. "So I can eliminate you from my inquiries"

Cheers,

Theo

Theo, got one more possible cause for you. My AFR gauge has been playing up a bit lately & has been getting stuck on HTR , sometimes for 15 to 30 mins. During this period it runs so rich that I can't run it on petrol. I switch to gas & runs OK because it's not affected by 02 sensor inputs. Point I'm trying to make is, if you've got the 02 disconnected but still connected to the green ECU wire you might still be running in some sort of default mode for the MTX-L ? Eddie.

Hi Greg E.,

Thanks for the offer, fortunately I was able to borrow one for a few days.  My ECU is ok. I did some more adjusting on my AFM as per Peter Kestel's

suggestion and a new MTX-L  sensors. So I'm quite happy the way the engine runs now except, when the engine is cold it is not 100%.

The engine is still using too much oil, which in turn, I think fouls up the sensors.

At the moment I'm driving on petrol only - next I will check it out on LPG.

Greg, I would not mind if you could spare the time to cast a critical eye over what I have done. I also have a new CO2 sensor for you.

Cheers,

Theo

Glad you made some headway Theo. Should be able to do next Saturday morning if you are free. What kind of ratio are you showing under load now? I will try and get the mtx settings I am using as a reference.

Greg,

Next Saturday is fine. The ratio # around 14-15 on cruising, on the rich setting up a hill 12-14 and actually over taking.

Mind you my eyes are not constantly glued to it.

The magic numbers you and Eddie would understand are:

Analog Out 1 Analog Out 2

1.099 V - 0.884 L 1.020 V - 0.96 L

0.103 V - 0.995 L 0.187 V - 1.02 L

I guess there is room for improvement.

Cheers,

Theo

Yeah sure Theo. Just have to vote at some stage. Will be working on the interior fit out otherwise.
