fuel filter

Hey all, just a quick reminder the importance of replacing the fuel filter regularly.
As of about Xmas time I thought that my bus wasnt pulling uphill or through the gears as good as it should be.
My suspicions were a fuel related problem as it wasnt as miss as such but a feeling that something was holding me back.
Today I finally got some time to have a look and removed the fuel filter, drained it into a glass jar.
At first the fuel running out looked clear,so I blocked both ends and gave the filter a shake, and you should of seen what came out!
Black thick muddy crap oozed out.
I replaced the filter and took it for a run and I had that new engine feeling again!!
I only replaced that filter just over a year ago,so it goes to show how much work it has to do filtering our crook fuel.

I guess the position of the filter also puts it in the,I will do that next service catergory, but I rekon it should be replaced atleast every year.
I also have a new pump which I keep as a spare as the original is bound to fail one day.
So if you feel that your bus isnt going as good as you remembered, jack up the nsr and check the fuel filter out.
See you at the Nationals.
BenC

Ben. Thanks heaps for the heads up. I have a spare filter so I will swap it over and order another one. Sorry I cant make the Nationals but at least Hart will be there after his domestic bliss in New Zealand!!!  Cheers, Peter from Port

Ben a fuel filter should not end up that bad after a year of cleaning good fuel. You will probably find it was clean one day, dirty the next, due to a bad batch of fuel. If I were you I would think back to when you first had the problem and where you filled up, maybe on a trip or something? If you were just local I would rethink where I buy fuel. I bet even with a blocked filter you were still blowing away us lowly 2.1's. Greg E

This is slightly off topic – oil filters – but what good quality oil filters are available for the MV engine? I am about to do an oil change but have nil stock of filters.  There is a VW dealership not far away, so I should be able to get one there but knowing what else might fit would be useful.

Les

Les from memory the oil filter for the mv fits alot of late model cars so I would say vw will have stock. Last time I stocked up I got them from just kampers as they had bosch in stock for cheap.Greg E

Dealer is best as the price is OK.
Mann filters are OK but any German ones are good. Be careful of Bosch.

Dealer is best as the price is OK.
Mann filters are OK but any German ones are good. Be careful of Bosch.

It may not be Bosch. A lot of Bosch stuff sold in Australia is just relabelled generic from Asia.

If it is an oil filter that is listed to suit a number of cars, then I would not use it. eg. Ryco
The T3 oil filters are unique. They do not fit any other car.

(I do not know about the JK Bosch oil filters)

Just Kampers Bosch filters are made in south africa by bosch. They are the real deal. Also I can tell you from first hand experience that they do not affect oil pressure. Greg E

This is from the current Ryco catalogue:

T3 Petrol 4 2.1L MV [RD]

86-93

-

-

Z168

-

The (RD) means “RD MPFI OHV 8V” which doesn’t tell me anything.

Les
