Idler pulley

Hi there,

So, good to hear there will be a fair turnout on Sunday and looking forward to catching up. Will have to bring some iced drinks with 30 degrees on order.

I was a bit concerned as over the last few days our Syncro developed a strange 'moaning' noise coming from the engine bay. (Oh no, just in time for DOTVW, I thought.) However, our local specialist mechanic tells us it's just the idler pulley from the air-con compressor. As the Prestige air-con is a piece of sh** and never has worked and never satisfactorily will, I suggested we just remove it. He tells me there's no problem in doing this and I trust he is right. Has anyone else had this problem and dealt with it similarly? Overall, she is running well and will have a service and some R&R on the front brakes too. Still envious of people who have higher-performing brakes, however...

Best,

Francesca.

Hi Francesca, Pulling the a/c belt off if you do not use the a/c is the right thing to do. As far as future fix is conserned you have two options. The "right" thing to do is get a genuine a/c compressor bracket. Ebay from the states is the easiest. The other thing you can do is press a new bearing into the pulley. I did this with my old bracket before I updated. Grand total of $5. I have mine in the garage and can bring it with me. Mine was not prestige brand and may not be the same. Bring the belt on Sunday and I could take a look if you like. Is it with Lloyd? Greg E

Hi Greg,

Thanks for that. Would be good if you could bring it with you so we can see what the deal is. Talk more on Sunday. Sure Tony will be glad to catch up too. Is your family coming?

Best,

Francesca.

Hi Francesca,
Can you list what's actually been done to remediate the Prestige AC system please. I have the same system, still trying to get it to work also, maybe we can share info.
Cheers.

Hi Ken,

Precisely nothing has been done to remediate our dodgy Prestige air-con, mostly because I have understood from other people that it is fundamentally a shonky affair. If anyone begs to differ they can correct me, though. Living in these southern climes and not utilising the Syncro as a daily driver, we don't have quite the motivation to get the air-con up and running that others might. I do feel sorry for the kids in the back when it gets on the warm side, though.

Francesca.

Hi Francesca,
Yurik in Perth has previously reported here his success in remediating the Prestige AC system, which has kept me interested to attempt a "rebirth" on mine ever since.
Logic concludes the two front occupants would benefit most, with the front passenger the most smug.
Most adults would wisely concur that for the kids in the rear, it's character building!
Leaves me wondering though all the same, if the Prestige AC system was all that bad, how the heck did so many buyers agree to have it fitted? Did no one try it before they bought it?

As a reminder, please read attached file, some past forum comments on the Prestige AC system topic.

I live in hope!  Cheers.

Hi Francesca

I am in the middle of remediating the prestige ac system in my Trakka.

I have replaced the compressor with a new one and about to replace the TX valve over the next few weeks and also make the hole coming out of the outlets on either side of the dash
larger as per a suggestion in a previous post.

I will let you know the outcome.

In case people are not aware ..
some people fit in-dash AC also, so there are front and rear cold air outputs.
the common system to use for this is the Behr system, that came on some Vanagons.

my 85 high top T3 Adventurewagon has it in the dash ...like where the glove box is, which in my case is on the right side of the van's dash area.
T3 Vanagon AC is generally recognized to be only so-so in serious ambient heat from what I gather.

Hi ALL,
Does anyone know the correct model and/or specification replacement TX valve for this Prestige AC system? Not sure if a "universal" type would do it.
Attached are a couple of pics of my present/original TX valve I'd like to replace with new. TIA.
Cheers.

Hi Ken, Greg,

I have searched documentation on the TX valve that I used and have at last found the invoice and part number of the valve. It is TX8731 purchased from Coventrys.  It is a replacement unit that I used for the Prestige AC system and has performed well in my AC. If you search the net it comes up as a valve used in Landrover Defender models.

Trust this is useful information for you.

Yurik

Living in these southern climes and not utilising the Syncro as a daily driver, we don't have quite the motivation to get the air-con up and running that others might. Hi Yurik and Greg,

Just a follow up clarification please. The link below goes to a supply source for the TX8731 valve:

Confusingly it states "O Ring" in the model description. Does this infer O Ring type connectors for this valve, not "flare " type connectors which I'm assuming for this 20 yo system, would have been of the flare type? Any thoughts on this please? Or am I misunderstanding something here?
Also, can you please confirm this TX8731 was a direct swap-in replacement of the old TX valve removed (ie, no mods required to the fittings/pipework)?

Thanks Yurik.
Cheers.
Ken

Ken,

The TX8731 was a direct swap-in replacement unit which did not required any modification to pipes or fittings. The one that I purchased locally was a flare type.

Ken,

Correction, I just checked my old Prestige TX valve and it has O ring type connectors.  The replacement TX8731 is the same.

Cheers.

Ken

Thank you Yurik for going to the trouble, valuable information indeed and worth noting down for future reference as well.

Hopefully this info will make my AC service guy a lot happier.

Cheers.

Hi Ken and Yurik

I have just come back from the Air cond man and he showed me the old TX valve on the system is a Flare fitting and the new one is an O ring type.

which takes the TX valve replacement back to a lottery. unless anyone has any success with other flare type TX valves that have worked in a Prestige system.

regards

Greg
