Instrument Cluster

Happy New Year to All Fellow Syncro Fanatics.

Just wondering if anyone has an instruent cluster lying around as
surplus?

I have just installed a new stereo and soldered many wires without
removing the earth lead. Now my temperature gauge suddenly reads very
hot. As mine is an '88 model it only ha a 5 digit odemeter with no
trip meter - very anoying.

Let me know if anyone is interested in selling a cluster with a six
digit speedo and trip meter.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Scott

This is probably covered somewhere but can anyone tell me if the speedo is driven at wheel speed?  And has anyone replaced the clock instrument cluster with a tacho cluster?

Thanks

Les

Les,

The speedo is driven at at the front diff. IIRC, it's have wheel speed.

Yes, I have replaced clocks with tachs several times. It's always simpler to replace the whole cluster when possible. It's obviously more economical to install your speedo in a tach equipped cluster instead. What do you need to know?

Syncro speedo is from the front diff
2WD is from the front wheel.
They are different (number is on the face)

Yes.

Ben,

My odometer has stopped.  It might be fixable but I am looking at the possibility of replacing the instrument cluster with a tacho panel.   What I don’t know at the moment is whether it is dependent on the diff ratio or if it just drives at wheel speed (or half wheel speed).

Les,

The odometer can be easily repaired. You will need to remove the speedo from the cluster. Once done it's relatively easy to see which of small plastic gears have slipped off. You can simply push it back on. A dab of glue can help keep it from slipping out as easily.

KPH speedos are still available new and they will plug right in to the more available (used) 2wd clusters with tachometer, if you prefer not to repair your speedo.

Let me know if you need assistance getting a tach cluster from a 2wd. They are still plentiful here. It's only the MPH speedos that have become rare as hen's teeth. I even contacted Lars in Germany (Tristar Connection) as he always seem to have a stash of NOS parts. He said some Canadian bought every single MPH speedo he had. The following month, they became available on the secondary market at substantial mark-up.

IIRC we had a discussion about using Mk2 Golf speedos as substitute of sorts.

I used to replace clock with tachometer on my T3 diesel.

You need to have the right foil (the back of the cluster) for tachometer.

I was lucky I found the foil with centre dash clock with tachometer ;-)

What do you want to know?

Hey I'm looking at doing the same as I have a cluster from a Caravelle with the tacho.....are the wires already there for the Tach or do you have to hack the loom somewhere??? I was going to replace the Caravelle speedo and keep the Syncro one but am unsure about the Tach...The cluster just looks better IMHO..

There is one speedo for syncro (251 957 055 BL) and one for 2WD (251 957 055 BH)
That is metric speedo with tripmeter.

I have had speedos repaired before by instrument repairers.

Digital or analogue???

Ken,

I was unsure about where the drive comes from but if you fitted a US cluster and as far as I know the US delivered Syncros were all 4.86 final drive ratio, that probably answers the question – it must be wheel related, not ratio related.

It is now a matter of determining if the wiring in mine will take the tacho cluster.

Phill,

Did your cryptic “yes” mean that you have fitted a tacho cluster?  If so, where did you source it and did it adapt directly or were mods needed?

Les

Wiring is the same.
Just change the foil / printed circuit for the tacho. You may have to trim the guages from the analogue clock to fit in the tacho.

The best would be to buy the whole thing from the US. Throw away the MPH speedo and have yours repaired.
Les, The speedo is definitely syncro specific. From memory they say 1000 on the face and are driven by the front pinion shaft so final drive does not effect it. I think if you are looking for the quickest, cheapest fix repairing it your self or having say ringwood speedos look at it would be the go. If you are looking for an excuse to upgrade to tacho I would try to get a cluster out of Germany, their clusters are the same as ours, so you get a good speedo and tacho (bolt in).I got a 2wd one out of the US and used my (working) speedo. Also removed the o2 sensor light. The tacho wiring is already at the plug for the dynamic oil crazy bell. Which brings up another issue you will need one with dynamic. I still have the 2wd speedo and my old cluster if you need any spares. Greg E
