Leak at expansion tank coolant level switch

Hi all ,
Have a 1989 Syncro 2.1 wbx
Had a leak at the coolant level switch on the expansion tank.Removed it and found a hairline crack underneath the o-ring (o-ring was kaput as well)
Ordered a new switch with supplied o-ring.
Have fitted the new switch and coolant is still leaking around the area that the switch screws in .
Would silicone solve the problem

Philippe

You could try RapidFix which is stronger than super glue. Silicone would not have the same adhesion.

If all fails you will need a new expansion tank.

If not yet presented by a previous owner, this vehicle is eligible for the free VW 20F3 Vehicle Safety Recall campaign concerning replacement of all fuel injectors, engine bay fuel lines and their covers plus all associated connectors. Made in July 1991 in Graz, Austria.

Have a look if there is a sticker with a compliance number for the camper conversion as this may make it easier to register in NSW.
Also if it is registered as a motorhome it may be easier. There should not be a problem other than the people doing blueslips are halfwits.

Hi Leighton,

There once was a convenient Government website that detailed recalls such as this but has since been replaced by a newer website that no longer lists this and similar circa 1990s recalls. Bit convenient for VW eh.

VWs original written notification explaining the recall also listed the vehicles affected in ranges of VIN number order. Includes your VIN.

Yes the camper has a compliance plate from Safari SA, Current engineers reports, Gas report, rego QLD and third party insurance. It look clean from the photo's and info I have been told. Just need a Syncro person to help me look at it and test it in the sunshine coast Qld?

They are not valid in NSW. Do not say anything about that unless he says that you need one. Just show him the compliance sticker.

Hi Leighton,

When I offered my Trakka for sale, Jon from Melbourne got into contact with the local VW dealer here at Port Macquarie and he organised an inspection. I took the car there and the dealer had it for the day. It passed the inspection bar the aircon. The report was very extensive and thorough. Don,t know about the cost but would guess it to be +- $ 180.- or so. This could be an idea for you to go about.

About Rudi , don,t think that he is a mechanic per se, he is a highly regarded specialist on Syncros. He has been working at the factory when Syncros were built in Austria. He has an extensive parts arsenal here and in Austria.

I have a 6 when it should be a G? I tried to ring Rudi and he said ring back Monday? Is he a Mechanic? Does anyone live on the sunshine coast in the Syncro forum? I really need a workshop to check this Syncro out.

No idea if it's a syncro.

If not yet presented by a previous owner, this vehicle is eligible for the free VW 20F3 Vehicle Safety Recall campaign concerning replacement of all fuel injectors, engine bay fuel lines and their covers plus all associated connectors. But at the moment, you seem to have enough on your plate already.

So does Rudi own a workshop? can someone please explain what Rudi does and is he worth rining for help and inspection of syncro?

When I offered my Trakka for sale, Jon from Melbourne got into contact with the local VW dealer here at Port Macquarie and he organised an inspection. I took the car there and the dealer had it for the day. It passed the inspection bar the aircon. The report was very extensive and thorough. Don,t know about the cost but would guess it to be +- $ 180.- or so. This could be an idea for you to go about.

About Rudi , don,t think that he is a mechanic per se, he is a highly regarded specialist on Syncros. He has been working at the factory when Syncros were built in Austria. He has an extensive parts arsenal here and in Austria.
