Long Range Tanks

 Les,

Thanks for the help and advice. I have some G11 coolant but not enough at the present time. I was looking to get it done this weekend. What is the difference between G11 and G12++? Should I take my G11 back and swap for G12++ if it is better? Does normal Nulon destroy the heads?

Leighton

Leighton,

I can’t recall if 11 and 12 mix but the better course by far is to use 12++.

I don’t know how Nulon might or might not perform but this is a case of using the known best protection for your engine.  Go with the 12++ and you don’t have to worry about possible incompatibility.

Leighton,

If you don’t have enough coolant to finish the job this weekend, you will not do any harm by running plain water for a couple of days until you get the required quantity of 12++.  In fact, a run with plain water and drain while hot will materially help flush the system.

There is a bleed screw on the top of the thermostat housing that gets air out of the jackets.

A cheaper solution than moving to Melbourne was 2 x 25,000 litre tanks..... And then I filter that.

You wouldn't bottle this stuff here. Used to be OK but now there are over 20 coal mines pumping their water from all the flooding into the river system which flows through town out to sea. Hence real tasty water.....

That sounds a bit rough mate. In any case fresh rain water is perfect for coolant. Greg E

Just make sure that you have all of the warning signs not to drink the tank water!

There are 2 bleed valves. One on the thermostat housing (just a half turn) and one on the radiator (about 3 turns).

so it should only turn and not come off? Iam I correct in turning the bleeder valve in the
back to the left to open? does it only turn about half a turn?

Some mechanics use G11 and some use G12++.
G11 is permanent (within reason) and G12++ is replaced at 3 years. (I think)

Does normal Nulon destroy the heads?

Probably.

Phill
Phill,

Thanks for your advice. I have found the two bleeder valves. Does it turn to the left to open the one on the thermostat?

Les,

Thanks and can you help with what way I should turn the bleeder screw? Left to open? I will give the system a flush tommorow and drain again. I have nearly got my overflow bottles white again with a bathroom product. Do you know what Phill was taking about G11 being permanent?

Leighton,

Anticlockwise to unscrew.

I am not sure about the permanency of G11 and haven’t got time to check at the moment – I am packing to go to Queensland in the morning.  If the 12++ needs changing every three years (and I am not sure about that either), that isn’t a bad thing in any event.

Thanks and take care are you driving your syncro? Have a look at this link when you have time it is about G11 V's G12++ I just read http://mysite.verizon.net/janvdb/vw/Engine/g11_g12.html

That is about G11 V's G12 (not G12++). G12 is not suitable for T3s.

Phill,

Thanks and sorry I have been reading so much and only looked for G11. I think I will stay with G11 and give a good flush. Have you eva used the air gun to blow any water/coolant still in the system out? Or have you used the front of T3 jacked up or on hoist method?

I have never had dirty coolant. I have just drained and refilled it with G11 and distilled water. I just refilled and bled it. I have never needed to jack the front up but that would be the preferred method.

I did my last change and refill on flat ground.  Using the bleeder on the thermostat housing and running above idle, I just kept adding coolant until the bubbles cleared and the reservoir was full.

Greetings..
I'll just tell you what I do.

I drain out what I can get out easily ....either by a lowish hose on the engine ..
and rarely by the drain plugs on the bottoms of the cylinder heads ...( after removing the tin undercover there ) .

If I want 'more of the old flushed out ' I might drain ..
the fill with water, then run for a while..
the drain again..

and here is what I put in ...
50./50 antifreeze water ( a lower concentrate of a-frz cools better...like say 40/60 a-frz/water. )
50/50 is good for -32F and you are never going to get anywhere near that..
so no need to run a 50-50 mix.
40/60 is fine.
And add Water Wetter.
And run an 80 C thermostat.

I also add a half cup or so of water soluble oil ..machinist's cutting oil.
I have done this to hundreds of cars ..make the coolant look slightly milkey.
it makes a fine rust inhibitor and water pump lubricant.

do that and it'll be fine.
or as good as it can be, let's say.
Water Wetter  ( or similar products ( works too, btw.
