Looking for an 86 Radiator grill, square headlights, small emblem

Hey All,

Yep, mine is one the way out, so I am after the following:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Vanagon-Front-Upper-Radiator-Grill-No-Emblem-86-87_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33645QQihZ002QQitemZ120343741097QQtcZphoto

Unfortunately I was quoted $385 postage from the US.

I am very picky and would like this one particularly that has the
smaller emblem. But these ones were only available in America?

Thanks guys,
Sam
Sam ... if you manage to find that stuff over here in Germany, i could
probably ship it for around 100 EUR to OZ. Just looked up the prices
at DHL...

Ciao,

Martin

P.S.: even the US price for a _used_ grill is ridiculous... at least
for my understanding :)

Martin,

The US is just like any other place. There are cheap prices and there are ridiculous ones as well. I have seen complete
grills such as the one Sam is seeking for $5-$100 in good-excellent condition. It just depends on the Seller and the Buyer.
The average good used price for the aformentioned grill is about $40 in the San Francisco area. I have not sure about the
cost of shipping because the size might exceed the maximum dimensions allowed by the US Postal Service. UPS is
definitely on the highend of shiping cost from the US. For that matter, the vendor Sam has found on Ebay is none other
than GoWesty in Los Osos, California. They are well known for their ability to get record prices not just in reselling well
prepared Syncros but also parts. Their claimed top record for a Syncro Westfalia this year was $115,000. It looks like
they are applying some of their marketting prowess to selling used parts as well.

I stayed out of the query to give someone in OZ an opportunity to respond to some. If he is unable to find one locally, I
will be just as happy to find out the least cost method of shipping from here. Prices for used grills such as the one in
question has been dropping dramatically here due to many owners updating to the South African 4-light round lens grills.

Regards,
BenT
Hey Ben,

GoWesty is famous for their pricing even in Europe :))) Let's say the
$80 are ok, but the quoted shipping fee is way beyond it seems to me.
I guess they really just look up in their lists and that's it. No
flexibility with shipping service... I looked it up at German Postal
Service / DHL and they charge something around 80 EUR for 20kg to OZ,
plus 20 EUR for oversize. I guess you can find similar offers in the
US, too. If you can get your hands on a grill more easily, do it... I
just remember selling a good grill including the square lights and the
emblem for 135 EUR only this summer.............. I guess i should
have sold it to OZ and get a paintjob for my bus afterwards :D

See ya,

Hey Martin,

The one issue I can think of selling your set-up in OZ are the lights. The e-code lowbeams
from your LHD T3 will dip the wrong direction for these righties. The grills are very common
here in the US because virtually all models 86-91 got them except the very few (and rare here)
"L" models sent here in 1990.

Sadly the US-spec rectangular lowbeams have poorly designed reflectors. This is part of the reason
so many T3 enthusiasts here are switching to the cheaper round headlights which can be used in the
early grills and SA grills.

I bought several grill and rectagular headlight sets from an Ebay vendor for 110 EUR. Cost 42 EUR
to ship. These grills also came with the high pressure headlight washers. Seems expensive until
you ask the local dealer to order the e-code lights here. Anyway, I agree that GoWesty shipping is
far out in space. As I mentioned previously, they are probably using UPS as that is the service they
quote of their Ebay auction. As some of you may already know, UPS charges some ridiculous
brokerage fees to ship from country-to-country. DHL has similar problems depending on which of their
services you use. For example, one particularly large item was shipped to me from Germany cost
US$700. The brokerage fees were $504. The Seller had used DHL Cargo. If he had used DHL Express,
the cost would have been $850 but  there would be NO brokerage fees! On another example, I sent a
$50 item to Canada via UPS. The brokerage fees were over $100. The same item could have gone USPS
for $45 (no other fees). UPS does offer the vendor such conveniences as site pick-up. They come to
fetch the package. You get what you pay for. Unfortunately, in most cases, the Buyer pays for those
conveniences.

Cheers,
BenT

I am just catching up on this topic.  In Australia, headlights are covered by ADRs (Australian Design Rules) and all vehicles, including privately imported vehicles, must comply.  It would be implicit that this applies to importing lights; if they don't meet the ADR, they aren't legal.

Importing the grille is fine but importing the lights is pointless.  Apart from legality, they are readily available as new spares from dealers or second-hand from wreckers.

Les,

That was pretty much my point. On the topic lf legality, I'm sure there isn't a lot of enforcement going on between
an e-code RHD H4 vs. whatever the corresponding RHD lights available in OZ. For all we know, the ADR lights might
even be one and the same as those used in the UK for example. I have found that the round headlights are more
common in world markets besides the US and maybe Sweden. I can see those being easy to find in OZ but the
rectangular headlights?

The US grilles are the same as the Australian ones except the 4 headlight grille before 1988. The '87 grilles had a 95mm VW and the '88-'92 had a 125mm VW. As far as I know Australia only had the round headlight grilles pre '88 with the 95mm VW badge.

99% of our syncro vans have rectangular headlights.

Our headlights are the same as the UK ones. They do not make Australia specific ones.
Hey All,

Glad I stimulated some discussion on this one.

BenT or others, would be really appreciated if you are able to find me
one of these grills and / or a decent shipping rate for an 'oversize'
item like this grill. More than happy for you to charge the brokerage
fee for your troubles, rather than the US Postal service! Maybe I
also will try getting in touch with DHL and Fedex?

Would really like, and I know it's getting too late now, but if this
package could arrive pre-Christmas, as post-Christmas I plan to be
going on a road trip, and my current grill due to cracking etc makes a
wonderfully loud rattle from 80-110km/h! May see if I can dodge it up
with blu-tack or glue in the meantime.

Thanks all,
Sam

I think that you are going to have trouble finding a small badge grille in good condition. That chrome was never any good.

Not even if i had one right now anf could ship it tomorrow. Unless you
want to pay UPS and such huge fees - but why not buy it from GoWesty
then :)

Sorry,

Martin

P.S.: I'll ask around for a grill like that, if you still want one,
but for less money, it won't arrive quickly. My experience to the US
was around 3 weeks. (I shipped over 100 bullibooks over
there............)

Right. If at all, he can count on "non-broken" plastic. I'd expect to
need a wooden box or something similar to ship it safely over the big
pond, though..........

Wishful thinking, Sam. It's a long way to go for quick shipping unless you pay for premium shipping.
As Martin pointed out, the trick is packing properly so the grill does not come to you in a million pieces.
Most carriers such as UPS insist on 6" of product and packaging separation. That often makes the package
too big. The US Postal Service allows 108" on girth plus linear size. I will check to see if there is a way to
get a grill in such a package and report back here tomorrow.

BenT
Thanks Everyone for your help with this,

Yes I knew I was probably dreaming getting this to Oz before Christmas
:) Was talking with Gowesty at the start of December so thought I had
a chance until I heard the shipping price! I've got many things from
the US now but usually around 100 is the max I have paid for shipping
even large heavy item.

Anyway, if someone could help me out, even after Christmas, would be
much appreciated. A part that just isn't possible to find in Oz.

Chrome or badge missing isn't an issue, I will actually paint the
whole grill black. Just hopefully the plastic is not as cracked as
the one I have.

Many thanks all, appreciate your support,

Sam

Sam
