LPG Conversion

Can any member please give me some info regarding converting their
Syncro to LPG. I believe Andy in Ceduna might have gone this way.
Where would one put the LPG tank seeing that a syncro camper is
already pretty fully laden with water tanks and the like? Is there a
place where the 2WD T3 vans petrol tank would have been placed.
Are there any other posts on this matter.Much thanks,Mik.
Rick in Sydney converted one of  his Syncros to LPG

Mik,

I have heard there is a gas tank that is designed to be the rough
dimensions of a spare wheel. In theory, if you have a wheel carrier you
could mount your spare wheel on the carrier leaving space for a tyre
shaped gas tank to be located in the former 14 inch wheel undercab
carrier.

Plumbing to it could be an issue though.

I have seen another one with the gas tank under the rock'n' roll bed
which aparently worked well.

I think there was a guy in Perth with a chocolate coloured syncro with
a web page about his gas conversion. Try googling Syncro gas conversion
and see what you get. (it was a while ago I saw it though).

Let us know how you go as I am considering the same thing.

Cheers,

Scott

hi there, i have converted my Syncro and so has my friend RUdi.

Both instalations have placed 55 and 75 ltr tank mounted into the cabin floor adjacent to where the factory computer is placed.
Basically right against where the floor pan rises on a incline over the gear box and or fuel tank on the syncro. This allows safe and easy fixture to the chasis rails below the floor for compliance reasons.

Please note that Rudi has the larger tank and it it neatly is located within his camper rear seat/ fold down bed.You dont even know its there.

The key point to make when selecting a LPG tank is to acquire the largest one avaliable for the following reasons:
  • LPG consumption rate is approximately 1.3 greater than unleaded fuel for the same distance.
  • LPG tanks always have a dead volume of fuel (ie my 55 ltr tank can only recieve about 51 ltrs of LPG.

I reccomend installing a tank in the location listed above due to the fact it allows the largest tank to be installed
I average 330 km of driving at 120km/h for about 50Ltr of LPG

There is no noticable power loss. I have put about 60K km on LPG

I run dual fuel -  440 km of unleaded + 330km of lpg = 7 hours of non stop driving  - great.

Best regards

Hamish

Hamish,

This is excellent information.  Given the price of petrol, not a few of us will be considering this option.  Are these installations commercial or DIY?  What is needed at the intake manifold end?  How is the change-over from gas tank to petrol tank accomplished?

Many thanks Hamish. Can you tell me whether yourself or Rudi have the
tank installed under a 3/4 Trakka type bed/seat. If so, can such a
bed/seat mechanism operate effectively and properly with such a large
tank under it. In other words is there sufficient clearance for the
tank. Good info mate. Thanks.

i did it my self parts sourced from a salvaged wrecked 2wd vanagon, for insurance and goverment rebate scheems you MUST get an approved gas mechanic. There is no such thing as DIY.

A venturi is fitted to the intake pipe on the air cleaner side of the throttle body. The venturi is connected to a water (heated) gas mixer with diaphram. A small control module simply is wired into the injector circuit earth and earth to the fuel pump relay. When you innitate LPG, there is a adjustable delay in terms of RPM for the cutting of the above mentioned earths. For example my car always starts on unleadded and once you go past 1500 rpm(adjustable) the earths are disconnected and the LPG solenoids are actuated.

There is newer LPG systems with direct injection - however these are way to expensive and ARE NOT NEEDED.

Just go to a LPG mechanic, tell him you want the biggest tank you can fit and go for the simple (venturi/ mixture ) system.

Rudi made his traka conversion (Ie all the cubards - based on origina designs) -  it looks stock.

At worst you have to make a custom traka rear seat/bed to get arround teh 75 Ltr tank.

A little cost for the long term return in investment.

Mik,

The Trakka didn't come with gas as an option as far as I know.  Hamish will be referring to an aftermarket cradle to attach the gas bottle securely to the floor.  There's a lot of room under the Trakka bed/seat if you transfer the auxiliary battery to under the passenger's seat.  The seat latch mechanism is very flat, so that wouldn't get in the way.

Thanks too Hamish.

Gday Mik and ALL,

Rudi custom made his own rear seat/bed/under storage unit combination
for his syncro camper, primarily due to the fact Trakka was
unable/unwilling to make a bed long enough for him.

As the bed he made is longer AND higher than stock Trakka, that may
explain why he has more space to fit the larger LPG tank under the rear
seat. So fitting Rudi's size LPG tank in a stock Trakka setup may be
problematic.

I suggest one person directly interested in the LPG conversion contact
Rudi to glean more info about this conversion and report back here their
findings for the benefit of all other interested forum members.

Alternately, I read recently on a US syncro forum the idea that for
syncros that have the spare wheel mounted out the back, there presents
the opportunity to utilise the vacated space of the front clamshell for
a wheel-shaped LPG tank. Obviously that would also be problematic, but
if possible, would help balance the loads being carried in terms of
front/rear load.

Cheers.

Ken

when you see the price of a tyre/donut style tank you may think otherwise

A seat  is simply made out of timber

Many Thanks for this info Ken. It would be good to hear directly from
the horses mouth(Rudi that is) about the trials and tribulations of
the cylinder under the rear seat/bed conundrum. What do you know about
the doughnut shaped cylinder that sounds to horrible to mention, Hamish?
Cheers All and thanks

Hello Syncronauts,

Hurrah!! I got my van back on gas!!
What happened? In a nutshell the the petrol ECU & the LPG ECU did not speak the same language. However, in the end the LPG Installer came good and installed a different Sequential Injection System.
So far so good. But, it cost me heaps of money to prove the point that it was not the left off,Earth strap that caused the problem in the first place.

Cheers for now,
Theo
Theo,
Good to here that you finally got the LPG setup working.  It's a pitty it took so long for supplyer to come around.
