Nationals

If anyone has an unrepairable syncro transaxle or is replacing theirs with a subaru box I may be interested in buying it,

Neil.

Gents, just thought I'd drop the group a line as I have some appropriate news.

Subarugears is once again exhibiting at the VW Nationals on Sunday May 26.

Of interest to Syncro owners will be the display of 4.86 ratio ring and pinion gears (to match the VW Syncro front differential) and our prototype Syncro AWD solution for the Subaru transaxle.

This moves the AWD output of the transaxle to the lower part of the casing, also spinning the tailshaft in the same direction as the VW syncro originally does. This moves us closer to being able to provide a bolt-in Subaru AWD transaxle solution to replace any unrepairable Syncro transaxles. I say AWD as opposed to 4WD/Lockers as some Syncro owners have keenly pointed out.

I look forward to a chinwag with interested members.

Is there such a thing as an unrepairable syncro box?

All comes down to how much money you want to throw at it compared to alternatives.

I am sticking with mine thanks to Ronnie for all his efforts I should be picking mine back up this weekend.

Hopefully see you all at the Nationals (well as many as possible).

Cheers,

Scott

Todd,

The Australian delivered Syncros were all 5.43; the US got the 4.86.

Whats the story with the "lockable" 4WD system on some versions - is that a decoupler and a solid shaft as per Kens beast?

I am talking about the ALK & AVU gearboxes that have a lockable 4WD system as well as a locking diff.

re

If I understand the question right, ..............................some people fit a decoupler to the front of their syncro transmission ..
so it can run in AWD stock mode or 2WD rear wheel drive.

Additionally, some people replace the Viscous Coupling in the front differential with a solid shaft ...
so front and rear axles are solidly locked together in AWD mode.

Personally, I do not recommend this unless pure hard core off road performance is the goal...
since you can't run AWD on pavement that way ..
negating a huge advantage that Syncro's have.

The front and rear axles being joined by the Viscous Coupling in AWD mode also give a natural anti-lock braking affect.
And you need the VC in the system to run AWD on pavement to keep that very nice attribute.

When a solid shaft is fitted, you gain in one area..
and loose in others.
It's almost always that way with performance mods.

Thanks Scott.

Thats what I figured but it seems some gearboxes came with a locking 4wd system as well as the diff.

One of those boxes was for the 16" version.

I thought we all got a viscous coupling standard?

Whats the story with the "lockable" 4WD system on some versions - is that a decoupler and a solid shaft as per Kens beast?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

At this stage I'm making the 4.86 USA Syncro ratio Subaru ring and pinion - a USA Syncro front differential of matching ratio would need to be acquired in order to match them.

Other options will be to fit a Subaru transaxle and Subaru rear diff into the front. This will allow ratios of 3.9, 4.11 and 4.4 as well as the 4.86.

No 5.43 at this time but I will continue to investigate it.

Look forward to seeing you all at the Nationals.

Mmmmmm ... a tad tittilating to learn I'm in the class of "pure hard core performance"!

Given my own choice of solid shaft/decoupler/diflock setup and to illustrate my point, may I invite any/all participants of the Kombis to the Kape Tour to come on here and categorically state that Rudi Purkhardts similarly equipped syncro performed noticeably less than satisfactory compared to their own vans, both on hard pavement and soft surfaces.

Hi Todd,
Bit of a worry .... no mention of the G gear?

So are you saying buyers out there are willing to kiss goodbye this unique/fundamental/essential feature?
Cheers.

I have the solid shaft up front.
And a decoupler.
Rudi does my boxes too.

I swear by em.

My holiday home is on Bribie island and I want my front wheels to rotate EXACTLY at the same time as the rear (most importantly initially upon start off) in the SAND so your rear doesn't dig in).

My decoupler and solid shaft do just that. And there great when coupled with diff locks if you want to drive on less than 4 wheels.

And when on bitumen - all I need is 2WD. I like to unload my complete front drive train and save on my allready expensive fuel bill.

Hey Ken I would like an auto with the manual lock and shift and the older subys had dual range ?? My old auto kombi could get max torque at low low speed and an off road weapon. Think any one trying to give options for the old syncro is a legend in the making.

To answer Ken's question - to reverse the Subaru transaxle, I flip the crownwheel to the other side of the diff case (and install a reversed ring and pinion so they mesh). This interferes with the dual range setup unfortunately, so my solution is not compatible with the dual range boxes.

The only way around it would be for me to do my own casing, moving the dual range shaft to the other side of the case. Not financially viable I'm afraid - takes all the affordability out of it for everyone, customers and Subarugears. The beauty of the Subarugears current conversion is that it retains the affordable and plentiful Subaru casings and gearsets.

So yes, what I'm proposing eliminates the G-gear and also eliminates the manual 'locker' diff (although this can be replaced with what I have tested to be a superior Wavetrak torsen LSD. This provides automatic torque transfer, even if one wheel is lifted off the ground).

I have a queue of buyers in the USA that are perfectly happy with a reasonably affordable and reliable AWD setup to provide them the everyday 5 speed or 6 speed constant AWD setup for road, ice, snow and some light offroad. I presume that some customers in Australia will also fall into this category. I would call this an AWD OPTION.

Note that's AWD OPTION, not 4WD REPLACEMENT. Unfortunately it's unlikely to ever be financially viable to provide a proper, full 4WD REPLACEMENT for the Syncro transaxle, maintaining all its features like G-gear. I think we can provide about 90% of that, for probably 90% of drivers.

Interestingly, my dune buggy friend has been testing out the 4.86 ratio with 31" tyres and an EJ20 turbo. He tells me it does 5kmh idling at 800rpm along the beach. I'd call that pretty close to crawling speed and it makes me wonder about the 'need' for all the other stuff. Especially with a nice torquey Subie engine (e.g. a 6 cylinder 3.0L).

Pete, I am still working on reversing the auto, I have the prototype. It will get tested in the near future and will be released as 2WD first, then I'll look at 4WD and see if it's viable. mmm 5 speed paddle shift 4WD auto in a Syncro....

Hope that answers some of the questions :-)

regards

Todd
