New member looking for Syncro

Hi - my name is Alistair, and I live in Sutton, just across the border from Canberra.

I'm a past owner of a T2 dual cab Kombi and am aiming to upgrade to a T3 Syncro dual or single cab.

Its great to read your posts and see all those cared-for Syncros out there.

My impression is that the T3 series was never that popular in Australia, as opposed to the earlier models which used to frequent the roads (slowing the trucks on the Pacific Highway at every hill!), and I see lots of later T4 and T5 models on the road.  Does anyone know whether that was the case and why?

Alistair Henchman

Alistair,

Not the least reason would be that only 2100 were made in RH drive and they were spread over South Africa, Australia and England, with a few going to New Zealand.  The total production world wide was around 45,000.  The T4 and T5 were/are made in greater numbers but were/are a totally different vehicle.  Even the ‘off-road’ specified models were never a match for the T3 Syncro, which is why they are so treasured all around the world.

Les

Good luck with your search as there were only about 80 dual cab syncros and 8 single cab syncros sold in Australia.

T3s are not very common as they were really only sold for a couple of years in Australia when TKM held the franchise.

Alistair, These Syncro units were expensive and thanks to telstra we have more here than we ever wold have been able to.otherwise.
Was told that my top of the range Syncro with twin solar panels Trakka conversion dual lockers, long range tank central locking, cruise control etc , etc was $ 83,000 in 1992
. Not sure what a twin cab, Tristar or single cab sold for. Hart would be able to add some detail. You could buy exotic machines for that kind of money now not to mention 1992 ?.
Would have contributed to the low numbers i would think?

They were much cheaper from 1990 to 1992 than they were previously.

Alistair, check out the Samba site , you find a beautiful one there. Price? Have a look.
Also it is mentioned in that sales pitch that one of these wonderful vehicles found it's way
to Australia ( a Tristar) . I ended up with that one , bought it as a 14 months old demo for
+ - $ 55000.-- when I got it, it had crossed Oz west to east and east to west the latter as a mule transporting  one ton on it,s back , mainly fuel and spares for the Nissan's and others to be tested. The east west crossing is the hard one as the dunes are much steeper . Even the Big Red
Couldn't, stop the two Syncros taking part.Very recently the test report of that trip was uploaded on this site, interesting stuff, I am sure someone will point you in the right direction.

Bullshit alarm there.

I don't believe that it hasn't been restored.

The tray doesn't look original also.

Its on the Sunshine Coast SEQ will try to get a ph number for the Dual Cab and some details but I know its garaged and not used for quite a while. Think its white? Have not actually sighted the vehicle just casually chatted to an old fellow who mentioned it after he spotted my Telstra Syncro.

That is the sweetest Tristar and probably a bargain even at the buy it now price. If you add a reasonable storage fee plus interest on the orig purchase price would have cost more i think.

Hi Alastair,

A couple of worthwhile articles (IMHO) to help you on your Pritschenwagen(sinka) or Doppelkabine(dinka?) quest and answer some of the questions you 've raised along with the informed contributions already submitted. I think the relativities of the Aussie Dollar and the German Mark in pre Euro 1990 would also have translated into higher costs to add to the already expensive logistics of transporting vehicles between Austria and Germany. Import Tariffs were also higher in those days. Read what the articles have to say and you will wonder how any were sold at that time. Hope you and others find these articles interesting.

Hi Hart

maybe - The Bullimuseum ( http://bullimuseum.de/ ) didn't already have a Tristar so it may be of interest.... Whether they have the funds is another matter... Christian Grundmann may be interested for his private collection nearby...
