Les,

Thanks, ill need to do a bit of research on how to do that.. Would it be something that I could attempt?

Tony,

When it is only one gear that is hard to select, commonly either first or reverse but not both, it is usually gear linkage adjustment.

Hi all,
I have recently found finding reverse can sometimes be a little stiff..
Any suggestions??

Tony,

Refer to Hamish Dobson’s post and to Bruce Morphett’s post, in which they detail what they did to shift rods and slave cylinder.

Hi All

I am pleased to report that we made it from Eden to Camden today. Kids are now in their own beds and we are glad to be home after almost 5,500km travelled.

Thank you to all for the detailed ideas.

The Gear changes Became increasingly stiff as we drove on. It actually became almost impossible to engage 1st gear with the engine OFF!

however, Interestingly after a rest in Ulladulla for an hour and everything had cooled down we were back in action with useable gear changes, still stiff bit better. Towards the end of the second half of the journey the gear changes were still doable but increasingly stiff... Maybe not the clutch after all?!

Mark.

Mark Check the 13mm nut that holds the yoke to input shaft as the linkage enters the gearbox ? 5 minute job . was the culprit on my syncro with same symptoms?

If it's very hard to shift into gear with the engine off..
it's trans and linkage related, and not clutch related, for sure.

a really good and easy first step is just undo two bolts on the side of the trans , as I suggested early on in this thread..that easily isolates the trans from the linkage.

then you see if the shfirter moves freely ..
it should flap all over the place ..super easily , like there is nothing attached to it.
And if it does that,
other needing some spray lube here and there which is commonly not done often enough in my expereince ...
the linkage is probably fine ..though they always could use more nice spray lube on all the parts that move.

then ...check out the lever on the side of the trans..
more or less...
if that part is wonky ..the two failure modes I have seen is the ball sliding on the lever ..causing your exact symptom ...
and sometimes the lever is loose on the splines ....also not totally uncommon.

then if the lever is OK..shift the trans ..
it should move noticy-ly into gears moving it forward and backward.
In neutral position is should slide in and out easily and smootly.

if it doesn't do those two things .........something could be very wrong inside the gearbox.
Naturally ..
check how much metal is on the magnetic drain plug ..
and how full the gear oil is, and how good it seems.

There's no substute for actual 'hands on' and "look' at stuff.

I hope it's not your gearbox needing a full rebuild.
Syncro's do that though.

Sorry Les, Mark we were at the beach for the weekend - no email.  Glad you got home safe. Sounds like you stared the tow truck voodoo in the face and won. Scott has given you good advise as always. The loose nylon ball would be the first thing to check. Only two bolts to drop it off the gearbox and have a peek, even if its not that a blob of grease will probably be welcome anyway. Greg E

Les,

Mark needs to be careful that he does force the gear-stick too much as Ben Croft managed to snap his clean-off.

May be worth checking that the gear stick is still healthy as Ben struggled for a while before his stick completely came off. He gave me all these details @ the Christmas Mid North Coast off-road adventure.

Worth checking the base of the lever under the rubber boot - just in case!

Cheers and best of luck Mark,

Skot

Mark Kofahl is in Gippsland on his way back to Sydney after several weeks away with Deb and the two children.
He is experiencing stiff gear changes and more so when hot.
I thought that it might be fluid level but that’d OK.
Can anyone think of a possible reason?
Lost motion?

Hey Mark, dont know what's been covered in the replies as my computer/ internet is super slow tonight, but on both my vans I had similar issues and made an adjustment to the master cylinder. There is a piston that pushes into the master cylinder and the depth that it pushes in, is adjustable via a really hard to get at locking nut. I'm pretty sure it's outlined in the bentleys . Hope the fix is this simple. Eddie.

Mark ,

Yours does have excessive play in that area.
