New Syncro owner

Hi all,
I'll introduce myself 1st, My name is Dave Becker I live in Nowra
NSW, I have owned VW's for 30 years, my wife has an "89 Caravelle and
I have a '91 Twin cab, this is my 1st Syncro, thought I would join
your group so I could tap into your hands on experience with these
great 4wd vehicles.
I have just bought a '90 model ex Telstra Syncro van to play with, It
was used on a farm for the last 2 years and has not been looked
after!! a few dents and a bit of rust here and there.
I have cleaned the van inside and out, so I could see exactly what I
have, removed a full wheel barrow of dirt from the underside with a
screwdriver and small spade, then used a pressure cleaner for the
rest, inside and out, what a job, looks a lot better now!!.
I have tackled most of the mechanicals, fitting another power
steering rack (the original one was leaking badly), starter motor,
muffler and cat, Fully serviced the engine, coolant flush, new air
cleaner, plug leads, oil and filters, runs sweet now, lubricated the
gear shifter and replacing the seized accelerator cable, I also
swapped the interior for a Caravelle one I had, seats with armrests,
nice Deluxy door trims with side pocket etc etc.
Now it runs very well, and is nice and tidy inside, but after a drive
to Sydney on the weekend to give it a good run it appears the viscous
coupling locks on when the gearbox is hot, driving the front wheels
all the time, (was very hard to do a U turn in a side street)
What are my options? Where is the best place to buy one?, is there
such thing as a reco VC? What sort of $$$ do they cost.
Hope I didn't bore you all with my ramblings.
Dave

Dave,

Be sure to check that all four tires are the same size and have similar
wear. My van had some VC binding after hot runs, and a new set of tires
cured it. The old ones had some pretty uneven wear.

Dave,

Information about the need to run four identical diameter tyres was contained in the Derek Drew paper on testing the effectiveness of the VC, just a few paragraphs in.  However, Larry's post prompts me to be a bit more specific.  The VC begins to operate when it detects a difference in speed between the front and rear axles.  When all four tyres are of the same diameter and correctly inflated, the VC does effectively nothing in ordinary driving.  If the tyres are of unequal diameter, the VC is working all the time, even in straight line driving, thus applying an unnecessary wear factor.

I will send more information direct to you, particularly on getting accurate measurements of tyre diameters.

Les

Please let me know.

Hi Nick,
I only have one set of seats, and they are rough, without arm rests, they would need recovering, probably not what you are after.

Robert,

The sliding door is standard for the two wheel drive Transporters, so that widens the possible sources a lot.  If you are ringing wrecking yards, just tell them that you are looking for a sliding door for the VW T3 Transporter.

Make sure that you quote the model year. There are early and late doors.

Hi Everyone,
Axel is parked up and waiting for us to have time, in about 2 weeks, for our first trip. In the mean time my girlfriend is making some funky new curtains and I'm on a steep learning curve trying to get my head around all things Syncro.
I have 2 quick questions that someone might be able to help me with, the first is can anyone suggest where to go for a workshop manual? I found one listed on eBay but it is an electronic copy which wouldn't be as useful to me as an actual manual.
The other thing I'm wondering is if there are any components I should be paying particular attention to with the van at the 150,000 km mark?
Thanks,
Roger.
Roger,

I will ask my dad if he still has his electronic copy which he will no longer require or Phill might be able to set you up with an electronic copy at the nationals if you both go.

Otherwise try theSamba.com under the classifieds section and select parts for a Vanagon and there is likely to be an original one for sale.

I know my dad did the water pump not long ago so that shouldn't be a problem and he has the AFM harness patch from the recall installed so that shouldn't be a problem either (helps having bought a 1 Owner vehicle). But other than that its just hoses that seem to be a problem as they get brittle with age and leak including the common failure of the main coolant pipes running from the donk to the radiator. Mine just did this recently.

Yours is one of the last ones ever sold (bought mid 1993) so you have one that has many of the bugs ironed out that earlier models had problems with.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Skot

Roger,

Lucky you have a very late build and only the second owner and low klms to boot. Enjoy!

Want a Bentley Workshop Manual?
Make sure you buy the latest version, given you have a very late build.
Check these out ...............

Used Bentley manuals come up for sale on TheSamba reasonably regularly ... though none at the moment.

Full kit of replacement coolant hoses ...

Repair the ends of the two long nylon coolant pipes underneath ...

Have fun.
Cheers.
Ken

Hi Scott,
Your dad mentioned the water pump but I'll keep an eye on the hoses. If your dad has a copy of the manual kicking  around that would be great otherwise I'll follow up some of Ken's leads.
The more I read the more I becoming aware that I'm very lucky to have gotten hold of a late model.

Thanks Ken,
I agree I've picked up a really great vehicle, it's going to be a lot of fun!

Thanks for all that info, I'll start going through that after work tonight.

Roger.
