Phill is right on that... ref Square Headlights.. once Ateco started marketing the T3  & T3 Syncro after gaining distribution rights from LNC Industries in 87 (after the all-time low of VW sales in 1987 - just 48 sold in 1987 ) - Ateco ordered them with Square Headlights - the LNC vehicles had round headlights. M984 was the option I believe for square headlights, but probably doesn't appear on the VIN Sticker as it may just have M 608 - "Australian Equipment'. This was certainly the case for the TKM vehicles, which usually had very few M Codes on the sticker. The Ateco vehicles were ordered more flexibly with more options listed on the sticker, however, the square headlights were still part of the 'Australian spec'.

Internationally, square headlights were generally available from 1985 onwards, as an option for Transporters, standard on Multivan and Caravelle GL, and standard on special editions such as a 'WhiteStar Hannover Edition' or 'Redstar',

Hi all,

I just joined as I purchased my first syncro, a ‘92 T3 Syncro fitted as a camper with pop top, in really good shape with 220k on the clock.

I have found an issue I’m looking for advice on: took it on the freeway for the first time yesterday, and as it reaches 100km/h there a strong transmission (I think) whine / vibration. Up to 95km/h everything is smooth. Any idea on what this could be, and where I should look first?

Thanks in advance,
Gaetan

Could be tailshaft they can contribute esay check just remove and try as 2wd
Saying that check the obvious like cv boots tyres and wheel nuts first
That is after you ring seller and ask him he may know about the issue and never fixed as he sits on 94 klm per hour
Welcome and happy syncro ing

Thanks for the reply Peter! By tail shaft I assume you mean the prop shaft connecting the gearbox to the front diff?
I believe CV boots were serviced very recently by previous owner, who said he was aware of the 100km/h vibration, and that when he mentioned it to his mechanic was told to not drive that fast. Not so sure on that mechanic now..

Tyres are 70% worn but looking ok, I will check all wheel nuts and jack up and have a feel to see if anything's suspect.
Hi Gaetan,

As peter mentioned, the main central drive-shaft can be a noisy bugger and definitely cause vibration but the noise is no normally a whine.

The gearbox is definitely a common source of a whining noise.

Can you hear whining at low speeds at all? or is it just at high speeds?

If its just at high speeds it could be just 4th gear or hopefully its just the main central drive-shaft as it is much cheaper to repair than the gearbox. Plus you can use the syncro whilst the central drive-shaft is out being repaired. You cant do that with the gearbox.

I would highly recommend a de-coupler on the gearbox to allow the drive-shaft to be taken out of the drive without getting under the syncro.

However that seems to be around a $1500- $2000 exercise.

Did you buy that awesome camperise syncro from Western Australia?

Cheers,

Skot

Yes thats the shaft easy to remove located by a inner flange which means it does not drop out when bolts removed but easily pops out without undoing box mounts etc if you do loosen mounts alignment of both flanges is required some here use a string line
The replaced boots make me think its worth asking old owner if it was there prior to the boots being done
Cheers pete

That's a great idea Pete - I'll ask previous owner to find out.
Hi Skot,

it’s really hard to decide whether the gearbox is noisy or not as this is my first syncro so am unsure what’s normal or not. Seems to run pretty smoothly at town speeds - 60 to 80kph, but at times I wonder if it’s a bit noisy.. Going to 100kph was very obvious though, strong vibration and a definite unnatural noise that did not sound good. Back to 95 and it disappeared, so I didn’t insist. Need to find out what’s going on though, as I want to be sitting at 110 on long trips!

Looking at the service record it’s had the gearbox rebuilt twice by Muller & Muller, so it looks like this may be a weak point? I’m going to try the VC test also just to make sure that’s not cooked, but first I’m going to jack it up and check out all 4 wheels to make sure everything’s smooth. When you talk about repairing the driveshaft, what does that usually involve? Is it bearings holding it up, or U-joints that fail?

And yes, I did get this syncro that popped up in WA, was right next to me so I was there within 15mns of calling lol. Bit of a long story but needless to say I didn’t get it for the originally advertised price of 15k! PO realised quickly he'd grossly underpriced..

cheers

Have you checked your wheel nuts Gaetan.

Had similar symptoms years ago, while on a trip.
Called the NRMA and the man just walked straight up with his 4 Way wheel brace.
Near Side (LHS) wheel nuts loose.
End of problem.

Some English, just post WWII cars,  that we own, have Left hand threads on the NS.
They found that they were lass prone to work lose.

Somewhere in my archives I have the explanation.
If I can find it I’ll let you know.

Peter

Hi Gaëtan,
If you are removing the prop shaft please do check the univ
Joint.( At gearbox end) Mine was completely
frozen not too long ago. It produced similar noises and vibrations.Just a thought.
Good luck

Hi there,

some things I've checked over the years :
Tyres - check out of round / balance .
Some tyres will produce road noise too.
Prop shaft. These get out of whack with some hard offroad.
Get it balanced and check the rear bearings in the shaft for play.
Uni joints. Look for any signs of wear or noise.

Usually it's been the prop shaft in my vans that causes vibes. Take it out and go for a spin.
About an hours work each way to remove / instal.

I live in Freo if you want to go for a run in a Syncro that doesn't shake let me know.

Good to compare.

Good luck,

Mark

Hi Mark,

that’s a great offer thanks - I’d love to take you up on it. If I ride in yours I can then tell how good/bad mine is going. Also maybe if you came for a quick ride in mine you’d be easily able to tell me if it sounds ok or not at lower speeds.
I’m also in Freo!
Cheers
