There's only 1 official 84 model syncro and it is now owned by VW. It was in a magazine I have a while back - I think Mark posted it up somewhere.

Greg,

The first Syncro to go onto a showroom floor in Melbourne was at the VW dealer in Berkeley Street in the latter half of 1988.  Can’t remember the dealership name but they were part of City Subaru from memory.

It had the single round headlights and the spare mounted the same as the T2.  It was absolutely bare and I looked at the front to make sure that it windscreen wipers – that’s how bare it was!

They said that it had been brought in for “evaluation”.  It wasn’t all that long after that the four light version was brought in.  I don’t know what happened to the ‘evaluation’ vehicle.

Greg,

In terms of serial production, I don’t know.  I got the feeling that the round single headlight vehicle that I saw was very much a water-tester.  I would probably still have some notes from that time so I will dig them out.

Following items in the motoring press, I remember going to Sandersons (?) in Burwood Road, Hawthorn, seeking information about the Syncro.  I was told by the sales manager that there was no such vehicle, it was just a fairy story dreamed up by the motoring press.  I plonked a copy of The Age on his desk, dated the same day, which had half a page on the world tour being undertaken by either one or two Syncros, accompanied by a picture of one of them at speed half way across the Nullabor, heading for first Adelaide then Melbourne.  He came over all queer, heard a telephone ringing somewhere, bolted and never came back.  That’s amongst the notes too.

I was talking to the bloke who was doing the Discoverer conversions about 11 years ago now as I wanted it done to mine back then. He had an 87 model syncro with twin diff-locks which apparently was one of only 3 syncros that came into the country that year.

This syncro was on the Discoverer "Safari" model brochure. It had round head lights before he T-boned a commodore wagon and split the commodore in half - then remarkably drove home. But it did enough damage to upgrade his front to the square headlight version.

Les,
Would it have been Pound Motors in Berkley St that you were thinking of? Contrary to your Sanderson's experience I remember having my T2 serviced at Pounds and being asked if I was interested in looking at a video of a variation of the T3 with 4WD. I seem to remember seeing a T3 Syncro with a horse float on the back and also showing its paces in a quarry. I think someone (Phil?)  drew attention to it on U Tube or even posted a copy some while back. I did of course resolve that 1 day when I had sold all my children for medical research I would own such a vehicle. Pound Motors have gone the same way as the Australian Pound
However to equally add veracity to your Sanderson story I remember some years ago asking at the VW stand at the Melb.Motor Show when Skoda was going to be relaunched in Australia. I was assured there were no such plans but lo and behold next day the Herald/Sun ran such an article promoting Skoda 's reentry into the Australian market.

In the face of such porkies to prove I did not just write the NG  007852 VIN number on my Syncro myself in crayon I'm attaching photos of the compliance plate which is overstamped 11/92 and the build date plate 08/92  although it is between May and June 02 according to the chart which doesn't specifically show numbers starting with 007. Perhaps they were kept for Mi5 spies. It was first registered 22/12/92. Does this make Greg's vehicle leading contender for the last T3 Synchro sold in Australia?
Finally being an old bloke with such a sweet young syncro I would like to point out that I did not buy it by mail order from the Philippines!
Roger
Melbourne
(I would now sign myself "Roger the third" but decided against it after hearing it pronounced by someone with an Irish accent)

It was sometime in '88 that Ateco started ordering them with square headlights. It was always an option not a model change.

He used to work with Chris Band at Camperize. I think that his name was Scot. He wrote off the Commodore and the insurance wiped him because he was over the limit so he had to sell the syncro to pay for the damage. I may have some photos of his syncro somewhere.

Simon Matthews also had a round headlight syncro with spare wheel in the standard location (in the back).

Btw that was my first Syncro which I sold to Chris to buy the Tristar from Northshore VW.
Elke had bought me the Syncro from Muller's for a cool 50 G 4 weeks down the track the price dropped to 40....... At the time I added a/ c , a radio, rear bench seat and square head lights which I bought at Oettinger in G. and carried in my luggage incl of the grill. It was worth it.

Thanks for clearing that up Phill. Did they eventually drop the round as an option though? I have noted that the european military versions almost all had round h/lights. What is the earliest van you have seen?It is a testimony to the  Australian importers stupidity that they seem to have waited several years from start of production to bring out a vehicle so suited to Australia.
Roger, your still winning on both counts mate. My warranty card has a delivery date of 30/11/92. That is the date it went off to be coverted and did not hit the dirt untill the new year. So the Question is when you sell the old girl will you advertise as the youngest syncro in Aus? and will you then be called the former syncro owner known as Roger?

Les I know how annoying that kind of miss information can be. Once again though I blame the importers. How can they have the free advertisement of a syncro bashing through Australia slip through their fingers. They should of had syncros in dealers and stuff in the media from their own media department. Not to mention keeping their dealer staff informed. Greg E

Greg,
In terms of serial production, I don’t know.

Greg,
The first Syncro to go onto a showroom floor in Melbourne was at the VW dealer in Berkeley Street in the latter half of 1988.
Les

Ateco didn't give a stuff about VW. They were given subsidies from the factory. It wasn't until TKM came along that things changed.

Hart,

You have an excellent syncro history there.

I also found a T25 product brochure which was printed in Germany on 2/89 which shows all the vans with round headlights except the top of the range caravelle carat which had the square lights we all seem to have. The syncro spare wheels all seem to be under the front in the photos as well.

Cheers,

Skot

Simon Matthews also had a round headlight syncro with spare wheel in the standard location (in the back).

Phill is right on that... ref Square Headlights.. once Ateco started marketing the T3 & T3 Syncro after gaining distribution rights from LNC Industries in 87 (after the all-time low of VW sales in 1987 - just 48 sold in 1987 ) - Ateco ordered them with Square Headlights - the LNC vehicles had round headlights. M984 was the option I believe for square headlights, but probably doesn't appear on the VIN Sticker as it may just have M 608 - "Australian Equipment'. This was certainly the case for the TKM vehicles, which usually had very few M Codes on the sticker. The Ateco vehicles were ordered more flexibly with more options listed on the sticker, however, the square headlights were still part of the 'Australian spec'.

Internationally, square headlights were generally available from 1985 onwards, as an option for Transporters, standard on Multivan and Caravelle GL, and standard on special editions such as a 'WhiteStar Hannover Edition' or 'Redstar',

It was sometime in '88 that Ateco started ordering them with square headlights. It was always an option not a model change.
