Over the years, various avenues have been tried but without success. I have an idea that I am going to follow up through one of our German members that might be a lot more productive.
In the meanwhile, we could help ourselves by asking every member to send in his VIN number it has to be on every registration certificate and it is on the Syncro in several places. This would enable us to start building a register and keep track of the few left in Australia and New Zealand .

Hi Les. Mine was built in August 1988 and on the road in Victoria in January 1989 after a camper conversion by Suncamper in Sydney. Wish I could trace the original owner in Victoria as he did a lot of extra work. It had a very brief time with a second owner in Melbourne before I got the van and did more mods. The second owner claimed he did not get any paperwork from the first owner. Hmmm!!

91 Syncro Caravelle Trakka WV 2ZZZ25ZNGO20298
89 Caravelle 7 seater camper conversion WV 2ZZZ25ZKGO48432
Yes one has to go. Probably next year once Trakka gets Subi donk fitted.

Can anyone tell me where the normal coolant temperature gauge gets its reading from? It is no doubt in Bentleys somewhere – just not mentioned in the Cooling section – of course!!

Unless I'm mistaken, the temperature gauge sender comes out of the forward side of the housing for the thermostat.
See attached.

Hamish,
That is the T2 sensor and might or might not be what goes to the gauge. The T2 is the sensor that tells the ECU what the coolant temperature is so that it can set the ignition and the fuel injection to the right values. Mine malfunctioned a year or so ago and starting was very difficult until I found a new one! Still, it might also send to the gauge; I will have to comb through the wiring diagram until I find it – something that I was hoping to avoid.

From your thermostat
housing bro
Les it is on page 19.11 of the Bentley and is labelled twice. "Temperature Sender coolant display" and is also labelled incorrectly " Temperature Sender for injection".
It is also on page 40 of the genuine VW factory workshop manual 2.1 ltr EFI Engine (Digijet,Digifant) labelled correctly.

Phill,
Thanks for the reply. I thought that the T2 gave the ECU its primary temperature information. If it doesn’t, what does? I would have to unload a heap of building material from my Syncro at the moment to inspect this sender.

there are two temp sensors on the thermostat housing of a syncro vanagon.
one talks to the ecu, commonly called Temp Sensor II ,
the other one..
which is a screw-in single contact metal sender ( assuming you have the aluminum syncro t-stat housing and not the plastic 2WD one ) ........is the one that talks to the stock temp gauge.
I'd want to keep both though ......my stock gauge and my new aftermarket one ..
I would look into drilling and taping another spot in the aluminum t-stat housing.
I have some off the vehicle..
next time I see one I'll look to see how practical that might be.

Scott,
That saves me having to unload my Syncro to look at the housing. Now it makes sense – the T2 tells the ECU what’s happening and the other one tells the temp gauge what’s happening.
Lots can be lost in translation and this appears to have happened in this case where page 19.11 says “Temperature Sender coolant display”. Now that we have established that ‘coolant display’ means temperature gauge, all becomes clear.
Joachim is no doubt laughing his head off now!!

Yes that's correct. The Bentley is wrong. T2 is only for T2.
