new traka

Many thanks to everyone who has sent in their VIN numbers.

We are now well on the way to establishing an accurate register of who owns what and, at least in some cases, where it came from.

We can expand this into a full vehicle description once we get the basic register established, at which time Jon’s format can be brought into use.

KEEP THEM COMING IN PLEASE

Les

Phill,

Quite some time ago, you posted a key to the Australian Syncro VIN code.  Could you post it again please?  Logically, the growing VIN register should start with this code.

Thanks

Les

Hi Les,
My Syncro
VIN: WV2ZZZ25ZKG072107
Built: 3/89, Australian compliance plate 5/89, First registration 23/06/1989.
Kombi Syncro (Window van) Trakka Gold Pak conversion with Stratos front seats.
Looking at the dates, this is likely to have been one sold new as a camper through VW dealership.
See attached image.

Cheers,
Bruce Morphett.

Hi Dave,

Would love to see some pics! Yours must be the one which was advertised some 2 yrs ago ? If it's the real TriStar
it must be one of the 18 or so the factory ever produced in rhd.
Mine was built in 88 and came to Oz in 89. I bought it 1990 with 35 000 demo clicks on the odometer. It now has done almost 400 000ks.
For 8 yrs we had a batch  at Wanaka, however we had to sell this year ....

Hart,

You have a missing digit. There should be a J or a K in front of the G.

VIN NUMBERS

Over the years, various avenues have been tried but without success. I have an idea that I am going to follow up through one of our German members that might be a lot more productive.

In the meanwhile, we could help ourselves by asking every member to send in his VIN number – it has to be on every registration certificate and it is on the Syncro in several places. This would enable us to start building a register and keep track of the few left in Australia and New Zealand.

Hi Les,

Would VW be able to assist? Presumably they would hold numbers sent to Australia and perhaps those destined for Trakka?

Cheers,

Jon.

Given the very low number of responses to the VIN requests, I doubt that we will get anything like a representative answer.  Moreover, there are many Syncros out there that have never appeared on this group.  I have encountered several and there would e a lot more.

I also read somewhere that some Syncros were assembled in Japan?

 Never!!!!!!

Hey Les, The microbus was imported by Mark as a personal import taged and QLD complianced when he came to live in aus in 95 as it was the family micro bus, he purchased it near new 1991 apparently there was a marketing deal with SA car hire to promote VW then on sold as a low klm. demonstrator vehicles.
Came with log books marketing brochures etc etc English and African? Will post them when I sort a Scanner.
His family were emotional and his adult daughter was in tears as it went off on the truck a real part of the family Mark said.
Was put under a car cover near Noosa for about the last 5 years after the family grew up.
It fired straight up after pouring some fuel in to the plenum but it suffered from rust a bit just in three corners.
If it was an old splitty they would say rust free ha ha.
Drove itself out of 3 0r 4inch holes it had settled itself into over the years.
Going and just serviced when originally parked up but now maybe a fuel pump airlock, pump failure , relay or something have not really checked out yet.
Gave the under body rust converter came up sweet originally a lot of staining but now almost like new I can recommend this if someone's bus looks a bit scared underneath.
Except the tail shaft which is slightly pitted.
Mark is going to write me its life story which he says is quite extraordinary considering its only had a spark plug lead and a CV joint replaced plus servicing brakes etc.
Its a two tone paint job all blue then a white top and bottom painted over the sky blue van.
According to Jens its one of 3 colours available yellow was one not sure of the other It has 230000klm
.Jens said he picked it at first sight as SA Bus.
Its a DJ engine 8 seat Microbus AC PS CL TB BBx2 TW 5 Mag wheels
Interior seats and linings Blue Denim like fabric no holes or wear really
Now one of its wheel cylinders is on-board with Jens so it came in handy already.
Best Regards Pete

Pete,
Its a really nice Syncro with all the stock extras! I liked the air con. Little rust that can be fixed I guess-

Yea, thanks for the cylinder!  I'll get you some body parts for your rust fight!!! You'll get on top of it, I'm sure-

That van's colour brings back memories....

Cheers and good luck,

Jens

Peter,

Now that’s a history!!  I started a file for such information years ago but it never got legs.  This makes it worth reviving.
